Honestly, Naya sounds like it wants to have the idealistic world that Bant wants, but knows that you have to embrace chaos in order to live in harmony with it. Bant is the idea, but Naya is the execution of that idea. I really do look forward to all of your color philosophy videos because it gives me a lot to think about when considering the colors in isolation and together! Also... I feel like I contributed to the video because I saw one of the themes I mentioned on the Discord chat listed in the video; "Freedom through Coexistence." It just made me smile :)
Great points! I think Bant, because of blue, really tries to shape society in a good way but Naya is more accepting of our flaws and considers them strengths instead. Also yup your input really did help with the creation of this video.
@@DiceTry Which then...if you think about it, combine all of those colors and you really could have a utopian society. Think of it like a trapezoid, with green and white being at the top. That is the goal, with the two bottom colors (blue and red in this case) being the building blocks. So you have freedom of the heart and creativity of the mind creating a society of peace and acceptance. Meanwhile, black isn't around to poison it with its greedy ambition or amoral beliefs.

As someone who is Bant irl I found myself agreeing with all the philosophies in this video. Of course humans are more complicated than assigning colors to each other but in the Bant video he was describing my personal philosophy 1:1 except for a couple minor details. It's so interesting how switching one color can make a combination so similar but so different.
Naya sound like a big convention to me: The freedom to express yourself and be excepted for who you are without fear of ridicule. It doesnt matter wich fandom you have, we all coexist under the same convention banner. That`s why I love conventions
An idea that I think is worth considering in the context of Naya is that of the central idea of Anarchism: Anarchy is Order (this is where the Circle-A symbol comes from). In essence, this means that when people are not being controlled and dominated by intrusive hierarchies, they are able to live more orderly and peaceful lives. Or in other words, by accepting that people don't _need_ to be dominated, their lives will be simultaneously freer and more orderly than if they were.
I resonate so unbelievably hard with this concept that it actually kind of hurts when visualizing that world in comparison to the modern world and the distance between the two :(
My personal opinion honestly,but I think Naya is the three-color combination which values interpersonal relationships the most(Green's focus on interdependence ---White's focus on community and unity---Red's focus on feelings and emotions such as empathy and compassion)
And honestly I'm glad it did. I seem to always say this but I think I found yet another philosophy that I find very cool and close to my own way of thinking
As we see in the video Naya is def willing to get its hands dirty but if we look to Gruul and Selesnya they are pairings that both come down to acceptance of our differences and freedom found in our animal sides. The thing with MTG is it's a game centered around conflict so we get shown mostly the that side of the colors, but I'd say a lot of the colors and their combinations, when broken down into real life, are a bit less militaristic at their core
Selesnya is very chill too. It's lack of red makes it far less aggressive than the other two. Selesnya is still willing to fight in a war. All the guilds of Ravnica are. It is just that Selesnya is one of the less aggressive guilds. If there wasn't a huge threat, the members would be content to relax in thier pretty gardens. They are more about caring for nature and community. The fighting style is not that aggressive either. I have a little bit of experience with playng with the guild. So far there is building tokens, and then having healing and ramping. So it is more supportive than offensive. Support is relativly chill as far as fighting styles go. So if Naya is chill, it comes from Selesnya.
For Boros and Selesnya their white mana will direct them toward creating order either through community or army becase it fufil that need for structure
You could also see Naya in a “Wild protector” or and animalistic guardian, an individual that is gentle most times, but when angered, turns into the living embodiment of rage & strength willing to the wage war and crush there enemies to protect there love ones & tribe, the alpha watching over its pack, Naya is probably one of my fave shards, riding close with Jund, such cool concepts.
i've been using your video's in every DnD campaign and loving it both as a DM and as a player. My mute cleric who was bullied at the monastery who then found a demon they can get along looks out in to the world optimistically to try and form a real relationship with whoever will accept her. She was the first Naya I had.

It imposes tight central control for the sake of it, excusing all the injustice it imposes on "the necessity" of it when there _is_ none. The other colors achieve more creativity. It is against it & I feel like there should be no _possibility of_ unity with Green to it. It stifles everything, especially nature & admits that this is its intent. While he's not _wrong_ in anything else he says about it, every other aspect he mentions is a distant 4,368,925th priority to imposing order because it suits the higher caste(s), not because it serves humanity. Same as in real life. It's the only color here pretending to be something other than what it is. The only thing close to White about it are its lies, only they're not little.

If White is ever unjust, it is because Black has crept in, which it is wont to do. Humans struggle with selfishness and power in all works of fiction and in reality. The necessity of order in White's philosophy is fabricated, yes, but it is intended as a greater good for all to benefit. You are too quick to assume that the leadership of the group is corrupt because of the countless examples we all could list out both from fiction and IRL (and I think DiceTry does this in his Mono White and Orzhov videos, so...) Yes the other colors are more creatively inclined and White would admit that. The whole point of these videos is to explore possibilities of what a balanced philosophy between colors would look like. The fact that you see White as so overbearingly rigid in its need for Order is true of Mono White, but that you extend that belief to assume it would also overwhelm any color pairing is a pretty rigid belief and totally lacking in creativity. Maybe you have a bit of White in your own philosophy? Or you're Rakdos (Black/Red) and totally set on finding nothing of value in White. I'm Abzan, AMA.
I love the way you do these. I 100% got behind the vibe of acceptance, but then followed by the violent aspect. Naya from a philosophy standpoint is by far what I personally align with the most. Can't wait for the wedges. I personally look forward to Abzan, but they will all be very interesting, as the contrasts in wedges could be challenging to unravel.
I've always thought of naya as the party color. As in you have green which is about connectivity, white which values order, and red which likes to have fun. So, pretty much the cabaretti family
I just watched you video about Pie Chart instead of Alignment, and from there thoughtbthis shard was fitting for my Half Orc Cleric of Sarenrae. And listening to it, I think I was right. While he isn’t druidic, he does believe in Balance. That betwern Life and Death, between the strong aggressive people, and ghe less powerful common people. He was always White because he wants to bring Hope to people, keeping it alive. And Red has always existed too as he’s passionate and has been headstrong about it at times, losing himself to his heart without thinking. Green (which he acquired after he was killed, Reincarnated, and then had his body remade, forcing him to live his life 2 extra times) has taught him to balance it all, and to balance himself. Which came in handy last session when he wanted to give into anger and butcher a giant fish that was fleeing, but also knew he needed to heal the fighter that said fish had eaten, almost killed, and had to be carved out of it’s stomach.
Holy crap! I've been trying to find a tricolor combo to love and identify as for so long (as it is difficult considering that each color and its pairs are amazing in their own special way) but this video helped me find it. Naya literally has everything that I ever admire about life and the world. Thank you DiceTry for showing me how amazing Naya is!

Good for you. It took me a while to figure it out. I am a Bant person. The previous shard video is Grixis. That is when I made the realization. I identified with blue more than any other mono color. The Once the Grixis video came out, all the blue shards were covered. That was when I decided. This Naya video is great, but it didn't sway me at all. Bant has a lot of things I relate to. There is spirituality, wisdom and nature. There is growth and support of others. This growth can be physical, mental and spiritual. That is all relatable. The one downside of Bant is that it lacks the creativity I have. I relate to Bant the most out of the shards. However the jury is still out on which three color group I relate to. I am looking forward to the wedge videos. I consider myself good Jeskai and Temur material. I better watch the future videos before deciding. If you identify with Naya, than you would most likely relate to Temur and Azban. Good luck on your future discoveries.
It's somewhat ironic that I can see myself so very much in this philosophy (I even got it in the quiz you shared at some point), yet chronomancy and necromancy are my two favorite magics and they're in the colors I don't have access too.
What we value and what kind of mechanics we like doesn't need to relate to the same colours. For example i am quite perfectionistic and like getting as much value from every single card as possible wich are very blue values yet it leads to the golgari mechanic of graveyard-recursion being my favourite. Another example: playing a blue-white control deck could be a very rakdos thing if it is done for the sadistic pleasure of letting other people have no fun. What I'm trying to say is: it is not only what we are doing but also why we are doing it.
Wow. I am rewatching the color pie philosophy videos in the order I think is best. It is interesting to view the videos this way. Early on I watched the green video. Then I watched Gruul. Now I just watched Naya. It is interesting to watch in this order. I see how they are related. Green is the color of nature. Gruul is mainly into nature. It is more primal and beastly with a bit of red added. Naya adds in white. It shows the color of green expanded. Red and white are enemy colors. Red is into freedom. White is into order. These are actually the most basic pair of opposite in politics. All controversies can boil down into one side valuing more order for the government while the other side valuing more freedom for the people. Even D&D has this pair in its lawful and chaotic alignments. Green does fit as a way to bridge the gap. Nature does seem so free at first. It has no artificial laws or governments. Creatures run amuk, and do what they want. However there is also an order to nature. Nature is bound to the rules of evolution and the rules of the environment. Everything has its own role creating a harmony on nature. I think the three parts of the video can lean to different pairs in Naya. The balance is like Selesna. This is green and white. I don't think balance fits with any color or color pair. I only see it in things that are completely neutral. The best example is the guildpact of Ravnica. However if I must pick a guild, Selesnya may be the most balanced. It is neither agressive nor controlling. It is one of the few guilds that fit well in a midrange role. The other midrange guilds are Golgari, Orizhov and Izzet. The more aggro guilds are Gruul, Boros and Rakdos. The more control guilds are Simic, Azorious and Dimir. Selesnys just makes a bunch of tokens and creatures without getting into the fancy tricks of the other midrange guilds. Balance is like Selesnya. However it brings in red. That is so Selesnya can mix its tranquil order with some freedom and action. The freedom with acceptence is like Gruul. Gruul is really into freedom. It acts out its impulses. White gives Gruul a sense of caring for many others. There is caring beyond close friends and family. With this caring is acceptence. Accepting others is on top of the freedom for others. The natures retribution is like Boros. When I first imagined Naya, I thought of this. Boros is a mix of red and white. It is a zealous and couragious guild. It is willing to go into battle to do what is right. This kind of fighter is good in formal military. Addition of green makes one fight for nature. They fight against those that would harm nature. The best example that comes to my mind is the ents in Lord of the Rings. The villainus Sauruman ruined the forest with his industry. Ents are the tree people that keep in the forest. They started out being neutral in the war. However once they saw the devistation of thier forest they fought against Sauruman. The fight scene was so awesome. It is great to comment about Naya. I look forward to doing more.
The complexity of merging 5 colours which represent fundamental branches of philosophy is extremely satisfying if yet seemingly impossible. I find that both black and white are themselves not characteristically good or evil, yet they dictate so much how larger pairings of colour will deviate morally. I think black would be more interesting if it were less self interested to the point of psychopathy, where it tries to minimize evil when possible in order to spare its loved one's but maximizes evil knowing that its an inevitable core function of how that person operates and succeeds in life. It's more about processing life as inevitable pain in an evil world where strength is always a hard choice. However Im think Green has the weakest identity of all the colours, because you run into the mind vs body problem of consciousness, where you can abstractify or personify chaos as a person but you cannot personify consciousness without just being the regular old nature of consciousness. You can abstractify things in nature like cats or dogs or the changing of seasons. But personifying human nature is either just human by default or something less interesting than the full range and diversity of human psychology.

I feel like green will just try to fulfill its roll in the world and the two other colors influence that sense of purpose to establish a strong sense of duty. Essentially saying “this is where I need to be.”
I think confidence is a stronger tie than balance. Each color is confident in itself, passion, natural strength, and order. The enemy colors are not confidant. Black sacrifices its self to gain power and blue feels its own power is insufficient so it must learn more
i feel like naya is a more pacific verssion of jund (just swaping the black for white in this case) in jund everyone is free to do anything but for you to be free you need to be mighty and strong so others dont crush you and the ones you hold dear, the difference betwen black and white, in white the whole is what matter for black you and the ones you love are what matters, both are my ffavorite tri colors from magic and they complement each other in such a curious and lovable manner, tnks for the series and im very eager waiting for Abzan :) !!
Naya is Spinoza. Nature isn't different than god. It's just one aspect of it. Aspect, that we interpret by our only ways disponible. We "determined", we have to keep that in mind if we want to be free. Just Naya, with Spinoza with druid look.

I agree with naya philosophy we all have a purpose in the universe I accept everyone but I also embrace both sides of life light and dark because without either nothing exists. But I also accept that I'm different bit I dont allow that to get in the way

I sort of think if Naya in part as "preservation due to contentment". Here a person can value the way things are (naturally or more interestingly in terms of society and tradition) through green, with white providing the rigidity and discipline required to meaningfully protect and preserve that situation. The influence of red here comes in the ultimate motivation. The character does not act in preservation of its system or group due to some sense that it "ought" to be this way, instead due to the influence of red, they act in defense of their circumstances precisely and exclusively because they like them. They are happy, comfortable and content with their world, love and accept those who are around them and care very deeply about the people and systems they are close to. In this example, Naya serves as a protector for all those in its orbit, restricting itself, training and putting itself in danger (either physically or metaphorically) in order to preserve its specific circumstances. However, unlike a selesnya, abzan, or bant character their service is not some grim and solemn duty, but one of genuine fulfilment. Naya is probably one of the few colour groupings which can not only be truly happy and content, but can also maintain that feeling through great hardship. No matter the hell's that white forces this character to put themselves through, they can do it all in the knowledge that they are acting as they want to protect that which is important to them. This character is the young impetuous knight, hurling rhemsleves into danger to protect the companions they care about, the struggling yet devoted and fulfiled parent who puts every ounce of their being into preserving and providing for their family, the law enforcement and others who work to protect endangered species from poachers due to their care for them and much more. Ofc this is just my opinion and I'm always welcome to feedback!!!
Naya is definitely my favorite, but for reasons that MTG hasn't quite expressed through it's art or stories. For me, I like to see Green and White as a peaceful community which allows Red to be free in an orderly way. Reds freedom, passion and competitive nature in a peaceful community reminds me of sports! As a sports lover I see all sports as a way to bring communities together through acceptance, by follow the rules of friendly competition. Naya to me is a great example of the Olympic Games. Competition is in our human nature, and brings nations together through inspiration.
Huh. I took a quiz about which colors I would be in the mtg universe, reccomended to me in a video by you, and I got Naya. Odd, I would have acticipated Boros. I definently don't believe that entities and individuals are born with destiny and purpose, or that the world is as it should be. I might believe human beings have a sort of "soul" or "nature" that makes us want to not hurt one another, but I think I don't believe that so much as I don't want to believe that people are inherently cruel or indifferent. I guess I like some aspects of nature, but mostly because it's neat and there are some insights one can gain from observing it. Hmm, perhaps I should study green's philosophy more. Or perhaps I'm thinking about this to ridgidly. Thinking Naya to be no more than the pieces that make it up, instead of something more with them combined.

Still looking for a "Druidic Knight" sort of commander deck feel based around establishing the world, working with that world, and protecting that world. I can't play a commander deck without a theme or concept (which is why I get my behind kicked by mechanics-orientated folk). I created a charactor who started of as red white who hated the undead and served a god who validated his believe. He was so devorted to this corese that he negleted his body and only followed his hatred of the undeads. But after decades of fighting them, some of their necrotic energi had fused with his bones. The order begged/ order him to stop and take some time to heal and help the next generation, but he couldn't do it and took some men to slay a mummy lord and died of thirst before he got there. Now he wanders the world as an undead looking for balances and to forfield his destonie so that he can finally die
You know on the color test blue was my fourth color which makes sense because I value being smart and learning, I dislike the idea that factions without blue are barbarians we can be smart and build things too, we just don’t follow Vulcan levels of logic
I say Naya is conservatism at its innermost core. The three colors that make it up are all about preservation in one aspect or another while leaving room for natural change. White wishes to preserve the people, but knows the people should be allowed to have their traditions and freedom of choice in order to be preserved. Red wants to preserve the freedom of choice, but knows there has to be rules and traditions to follow in order to preserve the freedom of others. Green, which harmonizes both, wants to preserve their time tested tradtions, but understands certain traditions are uneccesary and are subject to change. As a result, the triad of colors becomes a system of checks and balances. The colors within can have what they seek so long as they follow the rules they set for themselves and each other. White keeps red and green in check through wisdom and discipline, red keeps white and green in check through trial and error, and green keeps red and white in check through understanding and acceptance. Eventually, they find common ground in freedom, tradition, and law. However, when someone's freedom oversteps another's, when a tradition is being too stubborn, or when a law is being too rigid, the three unite tigether and say enough. Mainly because such situations give way to selfishness and vanity, which harms the freedoms, tradtions, and the protections of both the group and the individual. If your tradition involves cannibalism, or human sacrifice, you're infringing on the people and their freedom. If you intend to break a tradition which has stokd the test of time and helped individual and group alike, you're treading on the people and their tradtion. If you intend to create a law that ultimately benefits you and yours and exempts you and yours from responsibility, you're going against freedom and tradition. Ultimately, while Naya understands change and ambition are a part of freedom, culture and rule, they won't tolerate people taking both to the point of selfishness and vanity. Naya is the triad of conservatism and moderation, self control and perservering tradition. They try all they can to not step on each others' toes, but overstep your boundaries and Naya will SMASH yours.
Ironically I feel the opposite in this regard. Conservatism has only ever been used to preserve a cozy status quo at the expense of those who it deems inferior and other. It restricts people and paints the world in a very cold and rigid and deterministic way, and any attempts at progress have always been blocked off by those of conservative thinking, such as with racial equality, gender equality, LGBT+ equality, etc. So if anything, Naya is against conservatism in a way that pure Green is often so susceptible to and sometimes even White is to a degree, given it’s love for order and all.
@ramenbomberdeluxe4958 You're describing conservatism in a way that's become corrupted. Ideally, it's meant to preserve time-honored traditions that have withstood the test of time while also allowing for new ones to arise. Conservatism, unfortunately, has been used as an excuse to keep crooked status quo, just as liberalism has been used as an excuse to do away with laws and traditions that maintain a delicate balance.
I don't think you should use the wedge names. When you discuss the combination, I believe you will be presenting it with the enemy colour as the primary and the two allies as secondaries. That wasn't the case in Khans of Tarkir. In Khans, the primary colour was still one of the allies. For example, The Mardu Horde wasn't White dominating over Black and Red; it was more like Jund trading away Green for White. A more accurate portrayal of what most people think of Wedges would be the Triomes of Ikoria (i.e. Savai, Ketria, Indatha, Raugrin and Zogoth). Savai had the swamps of Black and the mountains of Red, but was dominated by the Plains of White.
I don't know. Distinguishing "Temur = Frontier Clan of Tarkir" vs "Temur = Blue/Green/Red without Black/White" can be an issue, but I think just making the descriptions of the color combinations can be a good antidote :)
That's more of a grixis thing. Rakdos: muh freedom. Blue: I have the potential to become anything. Green says you are born a certain way and shouldn't try to artificially become something else.
@@SantanaBanana47 It's worth adding that Green's attitude when taken to the furthest extreme is more about a complete erasure of any sort of individual identity. You aren't "you", you are a component of something larger than yourself, and if I'm being honest with you, I don't think people can live healthy lives if they try to take on those values. If nature's 'design' for you is not what you want for yourself, then letting that idea control you like some kind of imaginary god is not only going to make you repressed and tormented, but will also condemn you to eternal mediocrity, and your potential to reach your greatest heights will be squandered.
@@HamsterPants522 sometimes what you want yourself to be, isn't yourself or what you are meant to be. Accepting who you already are may be the key to happiness. I guess if you are more blue/black in philosophy then you wouldn't think so though. I personally think most of our desires are what lead to our unhappiness and only very few things are truly worth desiring. Through the taming of our desires (especially the desire to control what we cannot), we can find peace and happiness.
@@SantanaBanana47 My philosophy is more in the middle of all 5 color philosophies. Anyway, it's not ever in your self-interest to be controlled by another person's idea for what you are meant to be, and to neglect your self-interest to such an extreme extent is not healthy or authentic. At the end of the day, no one is in any position of authority to dictate what is the meaning of life, or what desires are worthwhile or not. In matters of taste, all desires are equally valid, and of potentially infinite value. What you are expressing is familiar to me, as both daoism and buddhism are a prominent presence in my life and I engage with those ideas frequently.
@@HamsterPants522 well it's not another persona idea of what you are meant to be. It is reality/nature/fate. And it's not exactly your choice to decide to be controlled by reality. All you can do is accept fate and do what you can with what you have. It's not like we can control every facet of our circumstance. Also I very much disagree that all desires are equally valid and of infinite value. If you think about it at all, you will realize just how ridiculous that sentence is. I doubt you actually think that. Even if you want it to be true. We should only engage with desires that are meaningful in my opinion. How do we decide what is meaningful? Part of it is what we value, which is mostly subjective, but part of it is also logic. Objective truth. Which is objective. Unless you think everything can be determined by logic like some philosophers, even values. I think what is meaningful contributes to a larger whole.
Naya seems to be really a paradise, however, it lacks progress and morality, as by accepting all it doesn't need to evolve and change, which ultimately makes it miopic to its own flaws and somewhat self-righteous. I am the biggest fan of red-white, but it's also the riskiest colour combination.
Indeed, I'd argue that General Zod from Man of Steel was a Naya ;) This hot-blooded totalitarian was obviously Red/White, so let's see where he stands on Black, Blue, and/or Green: When Zod's armor broke in the battle of Smallville, he got his first taste of the power Kal-El had gained by growing up in the Earth's environment, but he also got his first taste of the pain Kal-El suffered as his body adapted to this power. When Zod started destroying the Earth's environment (in which Kryptonians have superpowers and humans can survive) to recreate the original Krypton (in which Kryptonians have no superpowers and humans all die), the computer ghost of Jor-El begged Zod not to do this, insisting that Kryptonians and humans can live together in the environment the Earth already provided. To which Zod responded: "So we can suffer through years of pain trying to adapt like your son has?" I’ve always had a negative conception of Naya. I think that it could be summed up as passionate and over emotional (the red aspect) focus on the community and its values (white and green) and red has to sacrifice some of its individuality while white has to sacrifice its civility so that everyone must serve their role in the collective. Any deviation from the glorious emotion-fueled collective is not to be tolerated. Essentially, anarcho-communists.
The fuck is this? Looking up strengths and weaknesses of 3 color combos just to get an idea of what I might want to work with but this is literately just lore. No MTG player thinks like this when building their decks. Creative I guess but not at all what I was looking for.

Honestly, Naya sounds like it wants to have the idealistic world that Bant wants, but knows that you have to embrace chaos in order to live in harmony with it. Bant is the idea, but Naya is the execution of that idea. I really do look forward to all of your color philosophy videos because it gives me a lot to think about when considering the colors in isolation and together!

Great points! I think Bant, because of blue, really tries to shape society in a good way but Naya is more accepting of our flaws and considers them strengths instead. Also yup your input really did help with the creation of this video.
@@DiceTry Which then...if you think about it, combine all of those colors and you really could have a utopian society. Think of it like a trapezoid, with green and white being at the top. That is the goal, with the two bottom colors (blue and red in this case) being the building blocks. So you have freedom of the heart and creativity of the mind creating a society of peace and acceptance.
Meanwhile, black isn't around to poison it with its greedy ambition or amoral beliefs.

As someone who is Bant irl I found myself agreeing with all the philosophies in this video. Of course humans are more complicated than assigning colors to each other but in the Bant video he was describing my personal philosophy 1:1 except for a couple minor details. It's so interesting how switching one color can make a combination so similar but so different.
Naya sound like a big convention to me: The freedom to express yourself and be excepted for who you are without fear of ridicule. It doesnt matter wich fandom you have, we all coexist under the same convention banner. That`s why I love conventions
An idea that I think is worth considering in the context of Naya is that of the central idea of Anarchism: Anarchy is Order (this is where the Circle-A symbol comes from). In essence, this means that when people are not being controlled and dominated by intrusive hierarchies, they are able to live more orderly and peaceful lives. Or in other words, by accepting that people don't _need_ to be dominated, their lives will be simultaneously freer and more orderly than if they were.
I resonate so unbelievably hard with this concept that it actually kind of hurts when visualizing that world in comparison to the modern world and the distance between the two :(
My personal opinion honestly,but I think Naya is the three-color combination which values interpersonal relationships the most(Green's focus on interdependence ---White's focus on community and unity---Red's focus on feelings and emotions such as empathy and compassion)

Huh Selesnya, Boros and Gruul are the top 3 most agressive/millitary
color pair, but Naya can be pretty chill.
As we see in the video Naya is def willing to get its hands dirty but if we look to Gruul and Selesnya they are pairings that both come down to acceptance of our differences and freedom found in our animal sides. The thing with MTG is it's a game centered around conflict so we get shown mostly the that side of the colors, but I'd say a lot of the colors and their combinations, when broken down into real life, are a bit less militaristic at their core
Selesnya is very chill too. It's lack of red makes it far less aggressive than the other two. Selesnya is still willing to fight in a war. All the guilds of Ravnica are. It is just that Selesnya is one of the less aggressive guilds. If there wasn't a huge threat, the members would be content to relax in thier pretty gardens. They are more about caring for nature and community. The fighting style is not that aggressive either. I have a little bit of experience with playng with the guild. So far there is building tokens, and then having healing and ramping. So it is more supportive than offensive. Support is relativly chill as far as fighting styles go. So if Naya is chill, it comes from Selesnya.
For Boros and Selesnya their white mana will direct them toward creating order either through community or army becase it fufil that need for structure

Naya is definitely one of, if not my favorite color combinations both from a mechanical and philosophical level.
You could also see Naya in a “Wild protector” or and animalistic guardian, an individual that is gentle most times, but when angered, turns into the living embodiment of rage & strength willing to the wage war and crush there enemies to protect there love ones & tribe, the alpha watching over its pack, Naya is probably one of my fave shards, riding close with Jund, such cool concepts.

It imposes tight central control for the sake of it, excusing all the injustice it imposes on "the necessity" of it when there _is_ none. The other colors achieve more creativity. It is against it & I feel like there should be no _possibility of_ unity with Green to it. It stifles everything, especially nature & admits that this is its intent.
While he's not _wrong_ in anything else he says about it, every other aspect he mentions is a distant 4,368,925th priority to imposing order because it suits the higher caste(s), not because it serves humanity. Same as in real life. It's the only color here pretending to be something other than what it is. The only thing close to White about it are its lies, only they're not little.

If White is ever unjust, it is because Black has crept in, which it is wont to do. Humans struggle with selfishness and power in all works of fiction and in reality. The necessity of order in White's philosophy is fabricated, yes, but it is intended as a greater good for all to benefit. You are too quick to assume that the leadership of the group is corrupt because of the countless examples we all could list out both from fiction and IRL (and I think DiceTry does this in his Mono White and Orzhov videos, so...)
Yes the other colors are more creatively inclined and White would admit that.
The whole point of these videos is to explore possibilities of what a balanced philosophy between colors would look like. The fact that you see White as so overbearingly rigid in its need for Order is true of Mono White, but that you extend that belief to assume it would also overwhelm any color pairing is a pretty rigid belief and totally lacking in creativity. Maybe you have a bit of White in your own philosophy? Or you're Rakdos (Black/Red) and totally set on finding nothing of value in White.

I love the way you do these. I 100% got behind the vibe of acceptance, but then followed by the violent aspect. Naya from a philosophy standpoint is by far what I personally align with the most. Can't wait for the wedges. I personally look forward to Abzan, but they will all be very interesting, as the contrasts in wedges could be challenging to unravel.
I like Naya it's acceptance and balance and yet it won't sit on its hands when things need to be done
I've always thought of naya as the party color. As in you have green which is about connectivity, white which values order, and red which likes to have fun. So, pretty much the cabaretti family

I just watched you video about Pie Chart instead of Alignment, and from there thoughtbthis shard was fitting for my Half Orc Cleric of Sarenrae. And listening to it, I think I was right. While he isn’t druidic, he does believe in Balance. That betwern Life and Death, between the strong aggressive people, and ghe less powerful common people. He was always White because he wants to bring Hope to people, keeping it alive. And Red has always existed too as he’s passionate and has been headstrong about it at times, losing himself to his heart without thinking. Green (which he acquired after he was killed, Reincarnated, and then had his body remade, forcing him to live his life 2 extra times) has taught him to balance it all, and to balance himself. Which came in handy last session when he wanted to give into anger and butcher a giant fish that was fleeing, but also knew he needed to heal the fighter that said fish had eaten, almost killed, and had to be carved out of it’s stomach.
Holy crap! I've been trying to find a tricolor combo to love and identify as for so long (as it is difficult considering that each color and its pairs are amazing in their own special way) but this video helped me find it. Naya literally has everything that I ever admire about life and the world. Thank you DiceTry for showing me how amazing Naya is!

Good for you. It took me a while to figure it out. I am a Bant person. The previous shard video is Grixis. That is when I made the realization. I identified with blue more than any other mono color. The Once the Grixis video came out, all the blue shards were covered. That was when I decided. This Naya video is great, but it didn't sway me at all. Bant has a lot of things I relate to. There is spirituality, wisdom and nature. There is growth and support of others. This growth can be physical, mental and spiritual. That is all relatable. The one downside of Bant is that it lacks the creativity I have. I relate to Bant the most out of the shards. However the jury is still out on which three color group I relate to. I am looking forward to the wedge videos. I consider myself good Jeskai and Temur material. I better watch the future videos before deciding. If you identify with Naya, than you would most likely relate to Temur and Azban. Good luck on your future discoveries.
It's somewhat ironic that I can see myself so very much in this philosophy (I even got it in the quiz you shared at some point), yet chronomancy and necromancy are my two favorite magics and they're in the colors I don't have access too.
What we value and what kind of mechanics we like doesn't need to relate to the same colours.
For example i am quite perfectionistic and like getting as much value from every single card as possible wich are very blue values yet it leads to the golgari mechanic of graveyard-recursion being my favourite.
Another example: playing a blue-white control deck could be a very rakdos thing if it is done for the sadistic pleasure of letting other people have no fun.
What I'm trying to say is: it is not only what we are doing but also why we are doing it.
White actually has its own flavor of "necromancy", though it's depicted more like resurrection, protection, etc.

Wow. I am rewatching the color pie philosophy videos in the order I think is best. It is interesting to view the videos this way. Early on I watched the green video. Then I watched Gruul. Now I just watched Naya. It is interesting to watch in this order. I see how they are related. Green is the color of nature. Gruul is mainly into nature. It is more primal and beastly with a bit of red added. Naya adds in white. It shows the color of green expanded. Red and white are enemy colors. Red is into freedom. White is into order. These are actually the most basic pair of opposite in politics. All controversies can boil down into one side valuing more order for the government while the other side valuing more freedom for the people. Even D&D has this pair in its lawful and chaotic alignments. Green does fit as a way to bridge the gap. Nature does seem so free at first. It has no artificial laws or governments. Creatures run amuk, and do what they want. However there is also an order to nature. Nature is bound to the rules of evolution and the rules of the environment. Everything has its own role creating a harmony on nature. I think the three parts of the video can lean to different pairs in Naya. The balance is like Selesna. This is green and white. I don't think balance fits with any color or color pair. I only see it in things that are completely neutral. The best example is the guildpact of Ravnica. However if I must pick a guild, Selesnya may be the most balanced. It is neither agressive nor controlling. It is one of the few guilds that fit well in a midrange role. The other midrange guilds are Golgari, Orizhov and Izzet. The more aggro guilds are Gruul, Boros and Rakdos. The more control guilds are Simic, Azorious and Dimir. Selesnys just makes a bunch of tokens and creatures without getting into the fancy tricks of the other midrange guilds. Balance is like Selesnya. However it brings in red. That is so Selesnya can mix its tranquil order with some freedom and action. The freedom with acceptence is like Gruul. Gruul is really into freedom. It acts out its impulses. White gives Gruul a sense of caring for many others. There is caring beyond close friends and family. With this caring is acceptence. Accepting others is on top of the freedom for others. The natures retribution is like Boros. When I first imagined Naya, I thought of this. Boros is a mix of red and white. It is a zealous and couragious guild. It is willing to go into battle to do what is right. This kind of fighter is good in formal military. Addition of green makes one fight for nature. They fight against those that would harm nature. The best example that comes to my mind is the ents in Lord of the Rings. The villainus Sauruman ruined the forest with his industry. Ents are the tree people that keep in the forest. They started out being neutral in the war. However once they saw the devistation of thier forest they fought against Sauruman. The fight scene was so awesome. It is great to comment about Naya. I look forward to doing more.
The complexity of merging 5 colours which represent fundamental branches of philosophy is extremely satisfying if yet seemingly impossible. I find that both black and white are themselves not characteristically good or evil, yet they dictate so much how larger pairings of colour will deviate morally. I think black would be more interesting if it were less self interested to the point of psychopathy, where it tries to minimize evil when possible in order to spare its loved one's but maximizes evil knowing that its an inevitable core function of how that person operates and succeeds in life. It's more about processing life as inevitable pain in an evil world where strength is always a hard choice. However Im think Green has the weakest identity of all the colours, because you run into the mind vs body problem of consciousness, where you can abstractify or personify chaos as a person but you cannot personify consciousness without just being the regular old nature of consciousness. You can abstractify things in nature like cats or dogs or the changing of seasons. But personifying human nature is either just human by default or something less interesting than the full range and diversity of human psychology.
Naya is my favorite Shard, its probably my most invested Commander color identity. Its nice to learn more about it.

I feel like green will just try to fulfill its roll in the world and the two other colors influence that sense of purpose to establish a strong sense of duty. Essentially saying “this is where I need to be.”
I think confidence is a stronger tie than balance. Each color is confident in itself, passion, natural strength, and order. The enemy colors are not confidant. Black sacrifices its self to gain power and blue feels its own power is insufficient so it must learn more

i feel like naya is a more pacific verssion of jund (just swaping the black for white in this case) in jund everyone is free to do anything but for you to be free you need to be mighty and strong so others dont crush you and the ones you hold dear, the difference betwen black and white, in white the whole is what matter for black you and the ones you love are what matters, both are my ffavorite tri colors from magic and they complement each other in such a curious and lovable manner, tnks for the series and im very eager waiting for Abzan :) !!

I agree with naya philosophy we all have a purpose in the universe I accept everyone but I also embrace both sides of life light and dark because without either nothing exists. But I also accept that I'm different bit I dont allow that to get in the way
I’m curious on how the wedges will be approached; they’re an ally pair forced to work with the enemy colour they have in common. Guess I’ll have to wait and see!
I sort of think if Naya in part as "preservation due to contentment". Here a person can value the way things are (naturally or more interestingly in terms of society and tradition) through green, with white providing the rigidity and discipline required to meaningfully protect and preserve that situation. The influence of red here comes in the ultimate motivation. The character does not act in preservation of its system or group due to some sense that it "ought" to be this way, instead due to the influence of red, they act in defense of their circumstances precisely and exclusively because they like them. They are happy, comfortable and content with their world, love and accept those who are around them and care very deeply about the people and systems they are close to.
In this example, Naya serves as a protector for all those in its orbit, restricting itself, training and putting itself in danger (either physically or metaphorically) in order to preserve its specific circumstances. However, unlike a selesnya, abzan, or bant character their service is not some grim and solemn duty, but one of genuine fulfilment. Naya is probably one of the few colour groupings which can not only be truly happy and content, but can also maintain that feeling through great hardship. No matter the hell's that white forces this character to put themselves through, they can do it all in the knowledge that they are acting as they want to protect that which is important to them.
This character is the young impetuous knight, hurling rhemsleves into danger to protect the companions they care about, the struggling yet devoted and fulfiled parent who puts every ounce of their being into preserving and providing for their family, the law enforcement and others who work to protect endangered species from poachers due to their care for them and much more.
Ofc this is just my opinion and I'm always welcome to feedback!!!

Naya is definitely my favorite, but for reasons that MTG hasn't quite expressed through it's art or stories. For me, I like to see Green and White as a peaceful community which allows Red to be free in an orderly way. Reds freedom, passion and competitive nature in a peaceful community reminds me of sports! As a sports lover I see all sports as a way to bring communities together through acceptance, by follow the rules of friendly competition. Naya to me is a great example of the Olympic Games. Competition is in our human nature, and brings nations together through inspiration.
That would basically be making White's attitude stronger than Red's, though.

Huh. I took a quiz about which colors I would be in the mtg universe, reccomended to me in a video by you, and I got Naya. Odd, I would have acticipated Boros. I definently don't believe that entities and individuals are born with destiny and purpose, or that the world is as it should be. I might believe human beings have a sort of "soul" or "nature" that makes us want to not hurt one another, but I think I don't believe that so much as I don't want to believe that people are inherently cruel or indifferent. I guess I like some aspects of nature, but mostly because it's neat and there are some insights one can gain from observing it. Hmm, perhaps I should study green's philosophy more. Or perhaps I'm thinking about this to ridgidly. Thinking Naya to be no more than the pieces that make it up, instead of something more with them combined.

I created a charactor who started of as red white who hated the undead and served a god who validated his believe. He was so devorted to this corese that he negleted his body and only followed his hatred of the undeads. But after decades of fighting them, some of their necrotic energi had fused with his bones. The order begged/ order him to stop and take some time to heal and help the next generation, but he couldn't do it and took some men to slay a mummy lord and died of thirst before he got there. Now he wanders the world as an undead looking for balances and to forfield his destonie so that he can finally die

I say Naya is conservatism at its innermost core. The three colors that make it up are all about preservation in one aspect or another while leaving room for natural change. White wishes to preserve the people, but knows the people should be allowed to have their traditions and freedom of choice in order to be preserved. Red wants to preserve the freedom of choice, but knows there has to be rules and traditions to follow in order to preserve the freedom of others. Green, which harmonizes both, wants to preserve their time tested tradtions, but understands certain traditions are uneccesary and are subject to change.
As a result, the triad of colors becomes a system of checks and balances. The colors within can have what they seek so long as they follow the rules they set for themselves and each other. White keeps red and green in check through wisdom and discipline, red keeps white and green in check through trial and error, and green keeps red and white in check through understanding and acceptance. Eventually, they find common ground in freedom, tradition, and law.
However, when someone's freedom oversteps another's, when a tradition is being too stubborn, or when a law is being too rigid, the three unite tigether and say enough. Mainly because such situations give way to selfishness and vanity, which harms the freedoms, tradtions, and the protections of both the group and the individual. If your tradition involves cannibalism, or human sacrifice, you're infringing on the people and their freedom. If you intend to break a tradition which has stokd the test of time and helped individual and group alike, you're treading on the people and their tradtion. If you intend to create a law that ultimately benefits you and yours and exempts you and yours from responsibility, you're going against freedom and tradition.
Ultimately, while Naya understands change and ambition are a part of freedom, culture and rule, they won't tolerate people taking both to the point of selfishness and vanity. Naya is the triad of conservatism and moderation, self control and perservering tradition. They try all they can to not step on each others' toes, but overstep your boundaries and Naya will SMASH yours.
Ironically I feel the opposite in this regard. Conservatism has only ever been used to preserve a cozy status quo at the expense of those who it deems inferior and other.
It restricts people and paints the world in a very cold and rigid and deterministic way, and any attempts at progress have always been blocked off by those of conservative thinking, such as with racial equality, gender equality, LGBT+ equality, etc.
So if anything, Naya is against conservatism in a way that pure Green is often so susceptible to and sometimes even White is to a degree, given it’s love for order and all.

Ideally, it's meant to preserve time-honored traditions that have withstood the test of time while also allowing for new ones to arise. Conservatism, unfortunately, has been used as an excuse to keep crooked status quo, just as liberalism has been used as an excuse to do away with laws and traditions that maintain a delicate balance.

When you discuss the combination, I believe you will be presenting it with the enemy colour as the primary and the two allies as secondaries. That wasn't the case in Khans of Tarkir. In Khans, the primary colour was still one of the allies. For example, The Mardu Horde wasn't White dominating over Black and Red; it was more like Jund trading away Green for White.
A more accurate portrayal of what most people think of Wedges would be the Triomes of Ikoria (i.e. Savai, Ketria, Indatha, Raugrin and Zogoth). Savai had the swamps of Black and the mountains of Red, but was dominated by the Plains of White.
I don't know. Distinguishing "Temur = Frontier Clan of Tarkir" vs "Temur = Blue/Green/Red without Black/White" can be an issue, but I think just making the descriptions of the color combinations can be a good antidote :)

@@SantanaBanana47 It's worth adding that Green's attitude when taken to the furthest extreme is more about a complete erasure of any sort of individual identity. You aren't "you", you are a component of something larger than yourself, and if I'm being honest with you, I don't think people can live healthy lives if they try to take on those values. If nature's 'design' for you is not what you want for yourself, then letting that idea control you like some kind of imaginary god is not only going to make you repressed and tormented, but will also condemn you to eternal mediocrity, and your potential to reach your greatest heights will be squandered.
@@HamsterPants522 sometimes what you want yourself to be, isn't yourself or what you are meant to be. Accepting who you already are may be the key to happiness. I guess if you are more blue/black in philosophy then you wouldn't think so though. I personally think most of our desires are what lead to our unhappiness and only very few things are truly worth desiring. Through the taming of our desires (especially the desire to control what we cannot), we can find peace and happiness.

Anyway, it's not ever in your self-interest to be controlled by another person's idea for what you are meant to be, and to neglect your self-interest to such an extreme extent is not healthy or authentic. At the end of the day, no one is in any position of authority to dictate what is the meaning of life, or what desires are worthwhile or not. In matters of taste, all desires are equally valid, and of potentially infinite value. What you are expressing is familiar to me, as both daoism and buddhism are a prominent presence in my life and I engage with those ideas frequently.

All you can do is accept fate and do what you can with what you have. It's not like we can control every facet of our circumstance. I doubt you actually think that. Even if you want it to be true. We should only engage with desires that are meaningful in my opinion. How do we decide what is meaningful? Part of it is what we value, which is mostly subjective, but part of it is also logic. Objective truth. Which is objective. Unless you think everything can be determined by logic like some philosophers, even values. I think what is meaningful contributes to a larger whole.

Naya seems to be really a paradise, however, it lacks progress and morality, as by accepting all it doesn't need to evolve and change, which ultimately makes it miopic to its own flaws and somewhat self-righteous. I am the biggest fan of red-white, but it's also the riskiest colour combination.

I’ve always had a negative conception of Naya. I think that it could be summed up as passionate and over emotional (the red aspect) focus on the community and its values (white and green) and red has to sacrifice some of its individuality while white has to sacrifice its civility so that everyone must serve their role in the collective. Any deviation from the glorious emotion-fueled collective is not to be tolerated. Essentially, anarcho-communists.
