Just lost my mom a few hours ago. Just thinkin back to this time, when mom and dad were at home and could stop by and have a conversation. Just dont realize how good things are till they get into the past. Seemed like there was always safety when you were with them. Funny thing, how it feels like you are alone after they depart, now you are the adult, taking their place, with children of your own, and you know you are next in line. wish I could go back there, if just for a little while, to tell them how much they mean to me. Mom lived nearly a century, can you imagine how she felt with all she has seen come to pass?
My mom used to tell me when they got pulled over drinking and driving the cop would just take them home, or follow them. This was also back when you could smoke in hospitals.

We got to sit and listen to him do sound check and he asked both of us if we could hear him ok back where we were sitting as we were the only one's in the concert area at the time. He gave us each one of his guitar picks and we still have them to this day. Course we pissed our mother off cause this was pre cell phone days and we were supposed to be outside the fair waiting for her at a certain time but when we told her what we were doing she was cool with it course we were two teenagers who knew better than to piss our mother off but she is a cool lady once she gets the facts.
This song makes me miss good country music with writing about real life! I did a job out in Carlsbad, NM for XTO and every morning I rode to the jobsite, I realized the sunrise I saw could have been what Billy the Kid saw. After the job, I bought an Uberti replica Colt .45 just to experience what Billy the Kid shot. Everytime I pull the trigger this is the song that enters my head. “My innocence must have got lost”.
Back in the 90s there was a radio DJ in Charlotte whose last name rhymed with Billy - called himself hislastname the Kid. He played this song as his theme song until his boss told him to stop.

COUNTRY FOLKS ARE THE NICEST HARD WORKING people in this world they can appreciate a honest day's work and work hard for a living unlike other people that want things handed to them and don't understand hard work and what it is to be a man to all my Midwest southern folks stay strong keep working hard
This song is a memory of my childhood. Summer of '93 , me and my friends Kyle, and Parnell had our cap guns holstered, saddled up on our bikes and went looking for outlaws. I remember I was the sheriff and Kyle wanted to be Billy the kid. We argued for a while about whether or not Billy the kid was an outlaw or good guy. We started quoting lyrics from this song. I insisted he was an outlaw because it said "I guess he must have got caught. His innocence lost". Kyle insisted that he was a good guy because it said "shooting the bad guys through my handlebars". We agreed that he could be my deputy and be Billy the kid too. We tied some twine from a low tree limb and hung some of our action figures. I still remember explaining to Mom that the G.I. Joes were outlaws.
My friends and I did a lot of the same things when we were growing up. We built bike tracks in the local park. Rode our bikes everywhere. Though we hadn't heard this song we still did a lot of the same stuff. Had a great time doing it.
This is one of those songs I last heard on the radio as a kid in the 90s and it would randomly autoplay in my head throughout my life, but I never could recall who sang it.
One of the greatest country songs ever written...we ALL have felt like this at some point in our childhood. and we all wish we could recapture the joy and mystery of those moments.
If I had one wish, it's that my children could've grown up with the freedom I had as a child. Even in the early 90s, nobody batted an eye at a young boy riding his bike alone. No parents had to be present when every kid in the neighborhood got together and played massive games of tag through the entire neighborhood.
