- Welcome to another episode of @PastTheWireTV
The time is approaching fast. The 150th Kentucky Derby is 9 days away. On this show Pick 6 King Jonathan Stettin talks about and breaks down how he handicaps the Kentucky Derby. Check it out!
We still have some spots at our Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby seminar. It will sell out so if you want a reservation you'll find all the details right here:

Thank you for tuning in. We appreciate you all and feel free to share how YOU handicap the derby in the comments and what you think of the show.
What do you look for in a Kentucky Derby horse? What should you look for? Peaking and peaking too soon. Heart, fight, upside, pace, replays, all this and more.

Enjoyed listening to your handicapping info! 1:18:22
Terrific show, Jon. Like last year, when you tried mightily to help me make the seminar, my reliance on only my phone will prevent me from attending. But I still get a heck of a lot out of your sharing your knowledge and experience. Hope you have an enjoyable and profitable Derby.

Jon, you’re hilarious. Love coffee, love food, 😅
Einstein, SunGlasses, I love it, watched it again. 😂 7:02 Keeping it real Brother Ty 4 that. I needed this this morning
Thank you for your concise outline on how to look at a race. You really help us look at the puzzle as a whole and point us to which pieces can make the most difference between winning and losing.
Grazie
The playing with better players vs playing with not as good players is so right!!! 👍
definitely
Thank you for the content and insight Mr. Stettin, and greetings from Henderson, NV.
Jon, thanks again for sharing your insights! I'd like to say that Dosage is alive and well, what most people don't understand it was never meant to be a handicapping methodology...think of it as a classification system to understand a pedigree better.
GREAT show and Advice!!!!!
I love the Tyson comparison! As a boxing fan I’m always amazed at the similarities in the 2 sports. There’s a saying in boxing “Styles make the fight” and it’s the same concept as “Pace makes the race” in racing. If you go back and watch Tyson’s 91 second destruction of Michael Spinks, you can see the fear in Spink’s eyes. On the flip side, if you go back and watch when Douglas upset Tyson, Tyson was clearly off and you could tell from his ring walk. I really enjoy your videos and the concepts you describe. Keep up the great work, and thanks for doing it!
💯 on all counts
And thank you very much
Always Great Content Jon!! Im totally sold on watching replays as you say... You have such a great way of speaking, thats easy to listen to and learn from.. i always get some goodies out of your talks 👍!!
one of the angles ive been noticing on watching replays or even during a live race!! ( i look to see which horse in the race is having the smoothest head-bob, and have noticed that they are usually in the money... not always, but more times it seems. Being fluid is less energy used!!... Love your shows!!! Im a definate oldest to latest PP reader.. one of the first videos i saw of yours, you did that!! 😉 finding patterns, trends ect.. is a Plus..
i always appreciate your inputs!
WE love Sure Bet coffee!
Me too!

I Always Pick My Derby Winner On Derby Day, And My Formula Is The Horse Whom Ran The Best Mile Going Nine Furlong (9) And Any Horse Who’s Mile Within The Nine Furlong Is 1:35:00 To 1:36 To 1:37 Will Be The Choice Of Mine, Especially If I Spot A Lone 1:35 Mile Going Nine Furlong (9)
Jon, excellent show, many thanks for sharing your knowledge. Heard you loud and clear on Fierceness. Question: do you have Mage’s thorograph numbers on his Florida Derby in 23?. He was on the rise. You mentioned him at the time and perhaps we can take that number as a “baseline”. Granted… last year’s crop and race is completely different than this year’s. But again.. curious to see that number/pattern.
Thanks!
Hello: REALLY REALLY like all that you were saying. I paid on the link for your seminar and received anything back??
👍🏾
The trainer hasnt decided yet if Encino will go in the Derby, last I heard. But I am already taking notes on him, in case he does. A video shows him clinching the bit and staring into the camera with fiery eyes -- one of those visual clues that make him look aggressive.
Last yr after watching yr patterns and listening 2 yr tone of voice and yr comments I boxed mage 2 Phil's derma Southgate n mandarin hero. Caught nice exactly. Thks. I know u don't need my praise. This yr I'm going with track phantom Sierra Leone a la forego and fierceness. It seems u don't like t.p. to much. Even though he's working out in them I hope he does not wear them hoping the trainer figures out why the sub par last race. And I don't think he will be on lead like so many think . Hopefully 4th or 5th . Thks jon.
Appreciate it
Thank you very nice job!!!
Thank you too!
not Frankies first Derby mount!! was here in 2000!!
I remember
Just a touch in front
Is this a repeat show?
No
"Heart" is probably one of the least understood qualities of a good racehorse. I once owned a homebred named Jacks Are Lucky who absolutely had no heart, even though he had good speed for a horse in the Indiana-sired class. If Jack got an early lead and could lead all the way, he could win. But if another horse came alongside and challenged him, whether early or late, he quit running. Period. That's what "no heart" looks like.
