Owning any sort of McLaren is going to be quite an amazing experience, especially a brand new 570S. But is this a much better idea than owning a used 12C? Just test drove the 570S yesterday, fantastic DRIVER's car. In the "entry-level" supercar category, can't beat the bang for the buck of a lightly used 570S, it's got the performance of a Turbo S but the exotic looks (those doors omg) of cars costing much more. With that said, I wouldn't sell my 911 Turbo for one, but I'd love to add a 570S to the stable :-)

As they say, "there is no substitute". So hyped when the GT2RS took back the Nurburgring record. Between the two, I'd probably go GT3RS because N/A engines are where it's at (and that's coming from a Turbo owner). Nothing beats the sound of almost 9k RPMs, combined with the sheer driving pleasure of a perfected 991 chassis and throttle response of that maxed out flat-6 engine.

Just a matter of opinion, but the 12-C is the MOST BEAUTIFUL car I"'ve ever seen and as performance goes, very few cars are faster at any price.

aren't used 650S's approaching new 570S's in price? Which would you say is better for the money?
I could have actually bought a 650S new for only $20k more. To me the 650S felt like a newer 12C. The 570S felt like a newer generation. I brought a car guy buddy along to compare, he thought the same thing.

I had the same decision. Decided on the 570s myself back in July 2016. Two years coming up and still brings a smile to my face.
He tuned his 12c with an extended warranty? I wouldn't expect them to cover much either if I did that...
Tuning the car doesn't void the warranty. They just won't cover anything that breaks directly related to the tune. None of my issues had anything to do with the engine or trans.

One of my issues was similar to Troy's but his dealer covered his one fogged tail light for free as a courtesy. I had all four corners fogging up as well as the rear window panes. The warranty says in fine print that "water ingress" issues are not covered. McLaren North America settled by covering the parts, but not the labor, which saved me over $15,000 but I still had to pay $3k in labor! Generous, but still expensive. That was the straw that broke the camel's back for me. Many other things went wrong with the suspension, etc, that were considered "maintenance items" and not under warranty. My accumulators and door latches were replaced on my dime, because the dealer either didn't see the issues as a warrantable, or couldn't replicate the problem. So in some instances I gave up and paid to have the parts replaced. Most 12C owners don't realize that McLaren considers leaking hoses a maintenance item, even though the clamps are known to fail. If they start to leak, it's up to the owner to have them replaced to the tune of $3000! Door seals, water leaks, etc are also not covered under the extended warranty. And it's not just the money, also the time. It's a 10 hour round trip to my nearest dealer. I had to plan a mini vacation every time something went wrong with the 12C. Troy has simply just been fortunate to not have all the issues I had... yet. Wait until his water pump or tranny leaks, 2014's even have that problem.
Not my experience at all. McLaren Chicago covered all four accumulators and brand new headlights for me under warranty (even though it didn't really even need it). Car has been extremely reliable. Also clamps were covered under reg annual service. Not sure where you are getting those high numbers. Clamps are $650 if paying out of pocket. Accumulators are $2k out of pocket if no warranty. I had the 570 for the weekend... and i honestly prefer the 12c. The 12c just feels like a supercar where the 570 while awesome, felt too 'everyday' for me. Hard to explain, but similar to the feeling i got driving the r8 - its an awesome car, but doesn't give me the same feeling as the 12c/650s. Also drove the 12c / 650 and 570 back to back and the transmissions feel the same to me. They are all dual clutch and basically identical gearboxes with slight modifications... if you can tell an improvement thats great... but lets be honest were talking milliseconds.
RossoLinea, Good for you if you got more stuff covered under warranty, I didn't. Clamps are $650, yes, but hoses are $3k and are supposed to be replaced under maintenance. Once they start leaking, damage is done, and the McLaren tech is supposed to replace them, even if they look fine. I replaced my clamps before they leaked but a guy I know paid $3k because his hoses were already leaking. Had I waited, McLaren may have eventually approved the accumulator replacement, but I can't drive 10 hours round trip just to fight with warranty approval. The tech insisted it wasn't my accumulators, but I knew it was. I paid $2k for the accumulators, and it resolved the ride issues... Until 4 months later when a new accumulator problem occurred due to the tech forgetting to calibrate the accumulators. Another trip to the dealer, which was my last with this car.
It sounds like you drove a 570GT, because if you felt the 570S was like an R8, you need to have your head checked. The 570S feels like a generation ahead over the 12C, steering is more connected to the road, suspension has no clunk noises over bumps, and it shifts way faster. It's like PDK fast. Launch control is better than even the 675LT, plenty of youtube vids supporting this. I do drive my cars more aggressively so maybe I'm exploiting more faults with my driving style, but everyone that has driven my 12C says the 570S was a clear upgrade.

Not sure why you would buy another McLaren after having such an awful experience the first time - I mean the instant they refused to replace leaking headlights under warranty - that'd be it for me, they'd never get my business again and I'd be litigating. Nothing I hate more than getting shit service after paying big money. Of course I guess in America you probably don't have good consumer protection laws?
Because despite all that, the cars are simply awesome! The 12C was McLaren's first comeback car. Problems are to be expected. And yes, I had one of the worst experiences with the previous Chicago dealer, Mancuso. But one of the things that has kept me as a customer was just how much the 570S blew the dihedral doors off the 12C. I've extensively driven nearly every P11 based McLaren, and even after test driving a 720S, the 570S seems to have a level of refinement and build quality beyond the entire P11 platform, including the 675LT. It's that good.
McLaren dealers are anxious to sell these cars. Even with leases. Hate to imagine the depreciation on top of the maintenance on a 12c! The 570's aren't really holding value either. Gotta say though, the car is incredible to drive.
Yes they are amazing machines particularly on the track, and at least every generation does seem to be more reliable than the previous. Glad you managed to find a better dealer.
conradandjudy, The 570S is doing much better than the 12C ever did. The 570GT is the one the dealers are dumping. I could have taken an equal MSRP 570GT for $20k less than my 570S, but the driving experience wasn't as good and the GT's don't come with CCB's standard, not to mention they have more problems. 2 years in, the 2016 570S, which was released in 2015, is still only 20% below MSRP on the low end of the market. The 570S is a much lower price point car than the 12C/650S, so the depreciation drop will not be as bad. Remember that most 12C's were spec'd $300k+ and I bought my 12C $150k off original sticker just 3 years old. Yes, many 12C's lost 50% in 3 or 4 years. That is simply not going to be the case for the 570S for a number of reasons. I got my 2017 570S new for $20k off sticker for $199k, so I started off well. This car is an amazing bargain under $200k. But losing $20k per year in depreciation is considered good in the exotic car world, you just have to buy the car right. Even Huracans that were $270k new are $210k two years later, so this is not just a McLaren phenomenon. Since the 570S is a better car and cheaper to maintain, I think it will fair better than the 12C in the long run. I don't ever see the 570S selling below the 12C when the car is so much better in nearly every way, and a generation newer.
With all that said, the 12C is the used supercar bargain of the century. I think the 12C will bottom out at $99k in a couple years. Just be prepared for higher maintenance costs, as they age it gets worse. I heard Rob Dahm's brother had to fork over $15k to fix a sensor on his 12C. Stuff like that eliminates the cost savings of buying a used 12C, so be careful if buying one.
Lawyer App The overall high end exotic car market has lost some of it's momentum for 2017. Even Porsches,Ferraris took more depreciation than they did last year. While some adjustment is mc laren based , other is overall market based. We are at the 9th year of a bull market.
For a convertible 12c, I could get a 570s
Wow, owning a 12C really sounds like a nightmare. No reason to buy one when the 570S will soon depreciate to the level of the 12C.

The MP4-12C is a definitely nicer looking car. The 570S is Not a good looking car, hopefully more reliable then the 12C which can be a nightmare. Though have seen 12C as low as $ 99k with 12,000 miles which is tempting .

They made him pay out the nose for warranty etc and then screwed him over repeatedly. He should have gone to Lamborghini instead. Of course he's an attorney, the whole time I was watching I got a Sam Bernstein vibe from him. LOL

Ferrari is the best right now with 7 years maintenance included. Owning any exotic is expensive to keep up. What I was pointing out was how much cheaper the 570S is to maintain over the 12C. I was looking at $18k just to keep the 12C for 15 more months. I usually work on my own cars, heck I swapped my GTR trans in my driveway. But these cars cannot be opened up, so dealers charge whatever they want. LOL about the Sam Bernstein comment... no, I'm not an attorney, I developed an app.

Tbh, the 12c is the cheapest Mclaren you can buy. I wouldn't get one, I would only get one if I was barely able to buy it (like a old gallardo). If I had the money, I would buy a 675lt or 650s. No offense to anybody who buys 12cs, r8s or gallardos, but if they could buy the real supercars they wouldn't settle for the bottom of the barrel (i.e, if they could buy an aventador with no problem, why would they settle for a 2004 gallardo?). I'd get a cheap car to maybe start off with but if I had to choose one to really buy it would be the 675lt. I just love that car, it's so tough especially with MSO options & the wing. Once I'm making salomondrin money I'll be able to buy these things!

lol what an ignorant statement .... my 08 superleggera has outlasted my mp4, 675lt coupe, ferrari FF and f12... and the kicker is, for instance with superleggera, takes one fucking moron to hype it up then you'd be thinking its "cool" just like with my older GT2.... no one wanted them when i bought and was tracking it, now all of a sudden everyone cares? give me a break. the true enthusiasts and owners buy, own, keep, drive what they like and love, you're talking exclusively about the posers! and I'm getting my performante later this month in grigio telesto to match my superleggera , and yes ill drive my superleggera equally as much!

I bought The 12c have it for 6 years and no problems! Could get the 720s and after a test drive I still love the 12C ! Why? Go test drive both and then you will know why!
