Awesome video. I’ve made some signs like this as well and am doing one with epoxy next, so this helped a lot. Have you ever tried tracing letters/designs with graphite paper? I’ve found it’s really simple and the graphite paper itself is cheap and re-usable.
I used various width (1/4in to 1/2in) straight bits for removing material for the “river flow” and name and then a fillet bit for the edges. Glad you enjoyed it. Hope it helps!
The epoxy is not UV stable.. so may not be the best for outdoor use. The polyurethane I used was for interior, but they do make exterior polyurethanes and other outdoor clear sealers. Another layer of epoxy could be used.
I just used various width (1/4in to 1/2in) straight bits for removing material for the “river flow” and name and then an ogee fillet bit for the edges. Glad to see you are interested in trying it out. Definitely go for it, just be careful, it is rewarding.
@@TBBuilds the name was done with straight bits. Won't straight bits give it a squared look vs curved look for the lettering? Do you think a round nose bit would work? Sorry for all the questions. As you can tell I'm struggling lol
Go for it!!! Thank you, I am glad you liked it. Do a seal coat before the main pour! I may have had a few tiny pin holes but this was largely because I didn’t do a seal coat. You can also use a heat gun to eliminate air bubbles right after you pour it. I used Total Boat Thickset Epoxy and does a great job at eliminating air bubbles. amzn.to/3qMqqqj
Dude. I made an ohio plaque Inlays with a name and an ship steering wheel....the epoxy ran over the Inlays and sanding sucks....one done I used grit up to 3000...I don't have the look I want....what did I do wrong?
@johnrainey4634 oh I see. Were you able to sand the epoxy all the way down to the wood? It’s a lot of sanding but usually I have been able to get back to bare wood with no epoxy stain. Let me know!
Those little dots are air bubbles. I don’t now if you went over it with a heat gun or torch if not try it next time and that will eliminate those little dots. Great work !
So I started the orbital sander with 60 grit to level the epoxy and wood then increased to 220. Hope this helps. You could keep going higher to get a really polished look if you wanted to.
I used 1/4 and 1/2 straight bit but Mainly a 1/2 bit to hog material out. I bought a router bit set on Amazon. Hiltex 10100 Tungsten Carbide Router Bits | 15-Piece Set , Blue www.amazon.com/dp/B000KSOOLI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_34NY91FFJDV18MZMQEPN?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
VERY impressed with the freehand routing!
Thank you! With the pencil marks and taking my time it worked out quite well.
Hey what’s the name of the blue machine you used to carve out the last name?? It looked amazing my dude..
@@TBBuilds hey what’s the name of the machine you used to carve out the name?
@@brazzyuca the machine is called a wood router.
@@TBBuilds damn your a beast. Alright I’ll see if I can get one and be half as good as you. Lol
the free hand routing is insane! i just bought a cnc because i know id never get these kinds of resullts
Thank you @JayReevesCLT take your time and you can get there!
Nothing better then seeing this generation do something other than playing video games or texting on their phone. Kudos and great job on the sign !!
@teresa6775 thank you! I am always trying to work on projects . It’s rewarding to work with your hands 🙌 to make physical progress.

I have not tried graphite paper... that sounds like a great idea. I will have to try that soon. Thanks for the tip and I am glad you liked the video!
Nice job. What bit are you using in the router for carving?
I used various width (1/4in to 1/2in) straight bits for removing material for the “river flow” and name and then a fillet bit for the edges.
Glad you enjoyed it. Hope it helps!
Very nice video, gonna try to do a family crest shield for a Christmas gift, never used epoxy before. Thanks for the demo!!
That sounds awesome! Definitely give it a shot. Glad the video was helpful.
Also, Feel free to reach out with any questions! (Tbbuildsco@gmail.com)
Man I need to learn how to freehand router like that, great job
If you trace it out and just take your time you can do it! Just takes a little patience!
Thanks for the support. Let me know how it goes!
When sanding, especially epoxy, use a respirator. Epoxy dust is very fine and repeated exposure is not good. Nice work on the sign.
Thank you, I am glad you liked it. Also thanks for sharing the fact about the respirator and epoxy sanding.
Bravo de France 🇫🇷👍👏
Thank you From the U.S 🇺🇸
Great job, something I need to get into. Not so easy to get good wood in the UK and very expensive. Thanks for sharing
Definitely go for it if you are able! I never realized that was the case in UK.
Thanks for the support, I am glad you liked it!
What’s is the machine used for drilling out the letters?
@mfregeau59 i was using a router
Can this sign be use outside? Would the polyurethane make it waterproof?

Where did you get that wood sealed in plastic you use in this video? Awesome work btw!!!!
It is red oak and I got it at Menards. They had a good selection of sizes. Thank you for the support!
Quick question Boss, what sanding paper did you use in the beginning to get everything flat? Great job btw!
So I started the orbital sander with 60 grit to level the epoxy and wood then increased to 220. Hope this helps. Glad you enjoyed!
Sorry I am a beginner. I didn't search for the video of the coaster but I plan Tom what took did you use to carve out the name and design?

Looks really good, you've given me the confidence to free hand word carving.
Did you have bubbles? If not is there a bubble free epoxy?

Did you clean it and put any sort of finish on it after sanding? What does it look like? What is it about the look that isn’t what you want?
@@TBBuilds the epoxy stained the wood outside the letters....I poured it slow into the inlays...but it over flowed

It’s actually a porter cable of some sort. Not sure exactly. I have since bought a cordless DeWalt orbital

Yeah I don’t think that I did use heat gun on those but I have been since then. Thank you! Glad you liked it.
How deep do you need to router so that you don't see the wood through the resin?
I have done about 3/8 of an inch deep and not been able to see through it.
what number of sand paper u use
