My dear old dad played the reed organ!! He passed away in 2010. Listening to your videos brings back so many wonderful memories!!! Please keep the videos coming!!! They are truly wonderful!!!
This is the last piece of music that I remember my mother playing on her piano before she died in 2004.Thank you for the memories,Rodney.Well played on the magnificent Doherty suction Harmonium.
My late mother used to play an Estey Harmonium at her local Baptist Church morning service in the mid 1940's.I have no details of the instrument or it's fate.
@@ReedOrgans In the beginning it sounds so celeste-like ! How does it compare with the Berlin Organ? I would like to buy one ... even a sample set will do ! Can you get in touch with some studio that samples pipe organs, how much would that cost ? I suppose less than shipping all over to Romania !
Rodney- you have inspired my love for reed organs. I got the change to play one on a field trip to farm of america when i was in 1st grade. Now I am 12 years old and I just Bought a reed organ! I am probably one of the only 12 years old interested in reed organs in probably the whole world. I love your videos!
When you play a hymn on a reed organ I'm reminded of Henry F. Lyte's words, "Heaven's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee". I've never heard anyone, not online nor in real life, play more touching and with greater reverence.
I have enjoyed worshiping among these fine commentators, over a week now since I found this source and learned about these entrancing instruments and performances. I'm looking forward to visiting the (reed) Organ Shoppe right here in Fort Worth, TX.
Oh yes, how great our God is. Stay blessed and continue to play such inspiring hymns. I have been using these 29 hymns during early morning bible studies and prayers (alone with God) and it's been a blessing.
Whenever I'm playing these old hymns is when I feel so close to the Lord...wishing I played better than I do...I will one of these days, but not here on planet earth! (have both rotators and biceps torn, are totally unfixable, so am unable to play for too long as my pain becomes unbearable!)
O Store Gud is one of my favorite hymntunes, and this video brings out its full majesty. What an organ! What a performance! I don’t know whether I enjoy this more from a spiritual perspective or from a reed organ hobbyist’s perspective. Probably a bit of both, actually. Thanks Rodney! -Jim G-
Coming from a punk rocker, Fantastic Rodney ! If I ever make it upstairs want to hear this song as I ascend, I can only hope. And I want it to be your version with the Beautiful voice of Patsy Cline singing, I'm asking for too much but you never know and again, can only hope.
Rodney thank you so very much for this beautiful hymn which you play so beautifully that it sounds like music thats coming right out of the portals of heaven. I hope and Pray that The Lord blesses your music ministry and your personal life with his sweetest richest blessings possible and that you feel his strong loving arms of protection wrapped around you every minute of the rest of your life.
This organ is quite the old giant! Your arrangement, again, is so beautiful - the suspensions in the right hand and the ad-libbing in the bass part really show off the dynamic potential of these organs.
Knappa22 Thanks! As I am getting more familiar with this organ I'm finding new combinations all the time. The dynamics on this instrument are quite easy to control too, I'll be having fun with it for a long time!
I can't help but think of "Samuel Marchbanks" (novelist Robertson Davies) writing about delicate-looking young women charming their suitors by playing reed organs, while developing legs fit for endurance cyclists...
You're right. People use to see that a reed organ is inferior to a pipe organ but I find the sound of this reed organ truly impressive! Thanks for sharing. One question. Does this organ suck the air through the reeds or blow it?
Rodney Jantzi Thanks for the clarification. I'm from Holland and I learned that the German reed organ uses the the blowing principal. Interesting, those different techniques.
Amazing! Do you have any videos on organ restoration? I wouldn't mind paying for restoration tutorials as I am getting into reed organs and there are hundreds in my area that need help.
As I am listening to this great work again....I seem to feel that this reed organ is tuned to an Even Temperament...(which sounds so well in tune in any key)...Would you agree? I often play along with your videos using my Hauptwerk setup...(I can use my transpose & fine tuning features)..really neat huh?...regards, JRZ
Congratulations. I love to hear that. This is the kind of art that should be far more appreciated then it is. Where do you live?. Do you have any video of your organs?.
I live in the Rhymney Valley I am a retired Piano Tuner repairer. I also leant about organs from my Uncle who was a church organist for nearly 60 years He used to repair and tune organs as he was a trained to work on organs during the 1920`s. I have worked on most of the Organs in the local church`s in the Valleys ( Rhymney, Merthyr, Shirowy, Ebbw and Cynon Valleys). I don't have any videos sorry I have only had a digital camera for the last 12 months. I think I was the last person in Wales doing these beautiful instuments
I didn't realize you were in Europe. Well, if I could get my organ to you carrying it on my back I would bring it to you, but unfortunately it won't be leaving the house let alone the country so I guess I'm stuck with continuing to try and find someone here in the USA to work on it. All my best. Cheers.
Sounds great to swell here Rodney! I see that early on, you coupled the great to swell manuals, but not the swell to great, then later featured uncoupled manuals and featured different stops. Now, on this reed organ, even though it has two manuals (sort of rare in reed organs), you still have to pump the two foot pedals to draw the air through the reeds, so if you had the pedal board for notes, it would have to have a separate air supply (these are really rare, but Hanover Horton Historical Society Organ Museum has at least two of these in there)! O Store Gud is a really transcendent hymn for many Christian faiths and in my Roman Catholic Faith we sing it to How Great Thou Art (a hymn about God, Nature, and especially His salvific value of His Son Jesus)! One of Stuart K. Hine's greatest Swedish works, I will agree! Some may say it is too Protestant sounding, but nonetheless, is great for unity within most all Christian denominations.
Oh, and I will note that it is the Lee Conklin Reed Organ Museum that we have over in Hanover, MI within their old high school building that is open only on Sunday from May through September.
I'm not sure if there would be any that would be similar to the Berlin, but there were a large number of Dominion organs that were shipped to Europe that have many similar models, identical actions and voicing.
Have your organs been restored, or are they just that well maintained? I'm amazed by how good they look and sound compared to my old Estey single manual.
+Maxxarcade I have restored/rebuilt most of these organs from the ground up. The organ in this video was in horrible condition, it took around 300 hours to bring it back to life :)
HI, I was looking around on Ebay and happen to see this organ on there this week. Is it yours or just one that looks just like it. I love listening to you play. Beautiful.
Keith Green - The stops mounted on a curved jamb was the signature for W. Doherty reed organs to make them feel more like a pipe organ. They were successful at selling the idea, but practically with each stop pulling out at a different angle makes it a little harder to make a quick change than if it was flat. Thanks for commenting!
I have this video on Facebook describing the changes and technique that I used to play it, hopefully that will help: facebook.com/rodneyjantzi.reedorgans/videos/1927461110645988 If you cannot access it let me know!

That's one beautiful reed organ!

So beautiful and soothing ! Thank you for making this video and sharing so freely.

Love, love, LOVE that arrangement, especially the harmonizations at the end. You should publish your arrangements for us less knowlegable types. 😊
Mk Shffr Thank you! All I do is toss in a few extra notes... one day I'll attempt to make a teaching video of it...
That would be fabulous. :)
Loved
Absolutely beautiful!!!!! Just love hearing you play, really makes my day!!!!! :)
Explêndido! Que lindo! "Grandioso És Tu". 🙌🏻🙏🏻

No other instrument can express the Glory of God, very sensitively expressed through these fingers.

The Comforter upon ours strength
Очень здорово! Эта музыка должна звучать именно так, как Вы её исполняете. Огромное спасибо!!
Татьяна Колесова Огромное спасибо!
I can't help but think of "Samuel Marchbanks" (novelist Robertson Davies) writing about delicate-looking young women charming their suitors by playing reed organs, while developing legs fit for endurance cyclists...
Sounds as good or better than any pipe organ I've heard ... Love it !!!!!!!
You're right. People use to see that a reed organ is inferior to a pipe organ but I find the sound of this reed organ truly impressive! Thanks for sharing. One question. Does this organ suck the air through the reeds or blow it?
Jennifer Leung - thanks! This one sucks the air through the reeds, mostly all Canadian and American made reed organs will use the suction principal.
Rodney Jantzi Thanks for the clarification. I'm from Holland and I learned that the German reed organ uses the the blowing principal. Interesting, those different techniques.

I still repair these lovely instruments

que maravilha o som do harmonioso gostaria que fosse uizado liturgia
Poucas são as igrejas que tem um desse.
Do you know a European brand Reed organ with such a brilliant sound like your Berlin?
I'm not sure if there would be any that would be similar to the Berlin, but there were a large number of Dominion organs that were shipped to Europe that have many similar models, identical actions and voicing.
Thanks.

Kann man nicht so ein Instrument irgendwie bekommen ich hätte gerne so eins
Another magnificent instrument, Rodney. Where is it located?
This is one of the instruments in my collection, basically restored from a pile of rubble.
HI, I was looking around on Ebay and happen to see this organ on there this week. Is it yours or just one that looks just like it. I love listening to you play. Beautiful.
Hello! This is not the organ on eBay. I'm still enjoying it too much :)
My little two ranked Packard isn't quite the same.....
Well, it will not be the same but I bet that your Packard still sounds pretty good! :)
I am surprised to see the draw stop follow a curve .
Keith Green - The stops mounted on a curved jamb was the signature for W. Doherty reed organs to make them feel more like a pipe organ. Is there any way you could tell me exactly what settings you used to get this particular sound?
I have this video on Facebook describing the changes and technique that I used to play it, hopefully that will help: facebook.com/rodneyjantzi.reedorgans/videos/1927461110645988 If you cannot access it let me know!

Rodney,
It seemed like you were getting quite a work out toward the end of that video.
Have you invented a new aerobic exercise?
Mark.
Lol... You bet! This organ at full throttle requires a bit more foot action than my other organs. It is a good thing I'm used to it :)
rodney damn good sir damn good
This version is hereby approved by a Swedish church musician ;)
