    Sennheiser all day every day. Honestly with Sennheisers new range of headphones i struggle to name something to do with Audio that they can't handle, Mixing? check, Gaming? check, Recording? check, DJing? Check. Pick the ones that work for what your doing and your good to go. The HD 598 seem to be the most versatile of the bunch with the Originals, SE and Cs all offering to different tastes and giving the option of Open or Closed and are well worth the price.

      For around the house listening to music while doing chores or walking the dogs I have a pair of SR80e open backs by Grado Labs.

      If I want to feel more like I'm in a club or a highschooler's car listening to hip hop or while mowing the lawn I have a pair of Skullcandy Crusher headphones lol

      The Sennheiser 598 will probably come with me in the field and the M50x will probably stay at my computer desk. I know that's a long answer, but it's the truth my friend.

    I own both the headphones featured here, although my Audio Technicas are the older Ath M50 model. To my ears the M50's have more bass presence and an overall warmer feel. For sheer enjoyment of music they are a clear favourite for me. However the flatter presentation of the 598cs is probably a truer picture, which for mixing editing, even tracking is more of a go to for me. Thanks Scott for your insights. Cheers Geoffrey

      I still have both sets too. The cups on both have deteriorated to the point of leaving little black bits everywhere. I replaced the ones on the M50 with wicked cushions.Thicker than the original, but even more comfortable. The better seal around the ear contributes to a stronger low frequency response, so now they are even more bass heavy which is pleasant for most music, not ideal for editing.

    Can you elaborate a little bit more on the sound quality difference between the two?
    some reviews say the m50x sounds better and has a better punchier bass. i just bought the hd 598 Cs and im wondering if i should get the m50x instead

    • @evanwillis4108
      @evanwillis4108 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just tested both of them today and the 598C seems to have its mids turned up more, making everything sound a little deeper(including vocals), however the m50x has slightly lower and more dynamic low end bass. Basically, the m50x has higher highs and lower lows.(V-curve). Personally I prefer the m50x, but i'm sure some would disagree.

    • @scottlamp3097
      @scottlamp3097  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Mostly what I use headphones like this for is not listening to music, but for editing videos, so a lot of dialog and ambient noises. The 598Cs is a little smoother where the M50x can be a little harsh. In the field, I'm mostly using headphones as a diagnostic tool and monitoring for unwanted noises.
      To my ears the M50x has more clarity in the low end like kick drums, bass guitar etc. So for listening to music,
      (at least the type of music I usually listen to, Rock, Metal, Classic Rock etc.) I would prefer the M50x of these two.
      However, I prefer the experience of music on a good pair of open back headphones more than any closed back cans. The ones I have now are SR80e by Grado Labs. They aren't the most comfortable, or the most detailed, but It sounds more like the music is in the room with you. You almost forget you're even wearing headphones at all.

    yea my pair didn't meet my standards, even though my standards
    are pretty low. they just didnt sound like a 99 pair of headphones, let alone 150. sound isolation was poor, and I could hear just about everything else going on outside my headphones even at max volume. I've already sent them back, any suggestions for something a little more bassy and better sound isolation?

    • @scottlamp3097
      @scottlamp3097  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wilfredo Martinez if you really need all of the background noise to be eliminated, your best option is going to be active noise canceling headphones. Bose makes some that are really comfortable and sound really great, but you will pay a premium price.
      The other thing to consider is your signal source. If you are listening to a consumer grade device like an iPod or other MP3 player, you will never get the best sound regardless of the headphones. The components of the device and the MP3 format are good enough for most people, but they can only get you so far. You might want to (if you haven't already) look into a good dedicated DAC/ headphone amplifier. Also if you can get the WAV files of your music, it is going to give you much more detail.
      To really dial in your sound, the next step is to apply some EQing. There are a lot of ways to do that; more then I have room to cover here. Long story short, if you are relying on your headphones to color your music, you will always be limited to the particular frequency response of the headphones.
      There are headphones on the market that have some sound coloring abilities, but for a good set, they will cost you 2-3 times as much 598 Cs.

      I bought it too. To be honest it was hard transitioning from a bass headphones (cheap $20 gaming headset) to a audiophile grade headphone. It was very strange. Luckily my laptop has a nice soundblaster amp and I'm able to fine tune my headphones with the equalizer software. The headphones is indeed capable of base you may have found just not out of the box. That being said i do agree with you, I paid $100 for a headphones but they don't feel too extravagant.

      @scottlamp3097  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Jamie Kinseth thank you. What I should've said it that they are flat relative to other popular headphones such as Beats pro or skull candy etc. If you need truly flat headphones, the flattest I have ever used is the Sony MDR 7506. Most people won't like listening to music on cans that flat, so the M50x or even these 598cs are a compromise. They are "flat enough" for the way I use them which is not in a recording studio, but in the field and for editing sound for video. Have a great New Years.

    Hm, which one would you suggest for gaming?
    I'm thinking of attaching a mod mic and using one of these for regular gaming and listening to rock and EDM as well as video editing. However I have a tiny head and I'm worried that the Sennheiser HD 598 Cs won't fit. me. I've worn a pair of ATH-M50x's and they fit on me at the lowest possible setting. I haven't worn any HD 598's though and have no clue if it'll fit or if it's better.

    • @scottlamp3097
      @scottlamp3097  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wear the M50x on the smallest setting, and they are loose but comfortable. The 598 Cs is quite a bit tighter. I wear them 4 or 5 clicks out of 15 or so possible from the smallest setting and they are still significantly tighter than the M50x. I don't know if this will help but my hat size is 7 3/8.

      FYI: I'm not sure what kind of mic you want to use for gaming, and I have not tested this to be sure it works, but the included inline mic on the 598 should work if you use a breaakout cable like this:
      www.amazon.com/Headset-Microphone-Breakout-Adapter-Stereo/dp/B00IU2CYXG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1480619978&sr=8-1&keywords=3.5mm+trrs+breakout+cable

      - I would get a V-MODA BoomPro though it doesn't have a 2.5mm jack like the 598 or the Audio Technica. It actually only has one video review so far so it might be a nice thing for you to look at actually.

      Bart Ernest I think if both pair were lost or stolen. I would have to replace the M50x first. It is hard to imagine life without them. The sound difference between the two is negligible, but the all day comfort of the M50x is very hard to beat. And they sound fantastic. If the 598cs were more comfortable, I would chose them.

      Edgar Allan Poe on my head, and over my ears, yes the M50x are more comfortable. The ear cups are a little more leathery and sweat inducing, but the 598cs clamps more tightly on my head. Both are pretty great in their comfort and sound.

      @sordsmen3456 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Edgar Allan Poe I'm pretty sure most people don't find the m50x's as comfortable. I own a pair and they hurt like hell, the shallow earcups leave my ears smashed against the hard plastic covering the driver. I think the reviewer just has very fortunate ears that are flat or small.
