  • Randy's Patties was a Little Jamaica staple in Toronto. Its closure is another hit for a neighbourhood impacted by the construction of Metrolinx's Eglinton Crosstown LRT. We went there to ask what's being done to protect the community's heritage and businesses.

    Toronto has been building this LRT which is 19KM long for 10 plus years. London UK just built a line that is 118KM long in less then that. That’s all I need to say.

      I’m pretty sure London’s Crossrail has been under construction for 15 years, hasn’t opened yet, and many parts of it have been deferred to later years. From a financial point of view, I thought it was considered such a fiasco that government procurement practices around the world had to be rethought over it.
      In any case there’s an election coming up, so we can toss the current governing party and replace it with a new one. I’m hoping the new one will fire the Metrolinx CEO.

      @@my2iu it started in 2009. It’s 118km long. So what is that about 6 times the size of the LRT. It’s set to open mostly by June this year. That’s good turnaround if you ask me for a project that is underground mostly or all of it and is that long. Also, Toronto will never ever come even remotely close to any of the major European cities when it comes to subway systems, train systems, infrastructure, culture, food, restaurants you name it. It cannot compete with london, Berlin, Paris, Madrid, Munich, Moscow, you name it. I have travelled to all of those cities and have lived here in Toronto for a long time and can tell you that it cannot come even close to any of those categories and won’t in my lifetime.

    I appreciate this reporter not having the classic reporter voice and tone for the assignment. This was very refreshing. Praying the crosstown will be done by 2023

    Hope they complete it by end 2022.
    It will be a big relief for the small businesses in that stretch.

    Welcome to the wonderdull world of gentrification. Not likely. Because the vast majority of shopkeeper are leaseing their spaces. Building owners won't suffer not raising prices or selling their property for a tidy profit. And like Chinatown has moved many times over the decades so will little Jamaica if the culture is strong enough to sustain the blow. Toronto has an incredibly high Jamaican/ Caribbean / African population. I have faith they will find a way to flourish. But that's just my hope anyway.

    They are doing the EXACT same thing in LA with Leimert Park, a black village with shops. It'll be nearly well over 5 years of construction and no "new train" until all the black shops are gone 😑. Seems very intentional to me

    Would be good to do a kind of beautification type project. A lot of those businesses had very old and tired looking store fronts.

      That’s part of the charm. It’s a real, working class neighbourhood, with real shops run by real people. Sure, it’s a little scruffy, but that’s what authentic little businesses look like. Once the “recovery” happens, it’ll all be replaced by generic Tim Hortons and banks and Rexalls and whatnot. The poor people who built the neighbourhood will all go bankrupt due to construction, and the big chain stores will move in and reap all the benefits and profits when the neighbourhood recovers.

      I got a suit there for my wedding in 2008. My divorce is in the "closing" stages right now. I'm glad they're still "open " too! Lol

    The real problem is that Metrolinx and its Crosslinx construction partners are cruel, heartless people who don’t give a damn about the community. They don’t care what sort of misery they’re imposing on the local residents or local businesses. There’s many small changes they could have made to their construction practices to make things smoother for the community, but they just don’t care. They ignore your emails and phone calls. They’re all bad people. There are no community meetings. There don’t make any of their engineering staff available to discuss options. They ignore the pleas of city councillors. They probably spent more money on advertising campaigns bragging about how good the construction is than they spent on actually trying to improve the situation. They’re bullies through and through who should be ashamed at what they’ve done. They made my life a living misery for over a year. 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, they forced me to endure their horrible noise. I hope they all rot in Hell.

    Why is it above ground? Did they not learn anything from St. Clair? Why is it not underground like a subway line?

      When you take into account that most of that area was built in the early 1900s, it makes it very difficult to excavate beneath those buildings without seriously jeopardizing the integrity of their foundations.

      On the city website you can actually find the proposed transit plans for the renovation for that area and explanations for why each one of the rejected proposals was rejected.

      It is below ground, but they have to dig out the subway stations. Unfortunately, Metrolinx and the constructions firms don’t care about the community at all. They block off roads to use for employee parking. They block off roads so that they can use the space to store junk. They block off roads for years simply because they’re too lazy to hire some guy to stop traffic when a dump truck needs to come and it’s easier to just keep it closed off. They’ll block off roads for months simply because they’re too lazy to move some concrete barriers after they’ve finished construction. Those engineering firms don’t care about their impacts on the community at all and Metrolinx gives poor supervision. The Metrolinx CEO needs to be fired before he does the same thing to the rest of the city.

    Sure. They will just have to buy new machines each day. LOL.
    I hope you love it like we like ours. They redid international Ave. In Calgary. Everyone gets a month with them right in front, with a couple periods of of a couple weeks over a years. Drunken’ stumblers are pretty muddy though.

      This is literally a private project. The government gave money to private construction businesses to build the transit project with no restrictions. Those firms were even exempted from all bylaws and were given immunity to many provincial laws. So these firms have been acting like bullies to the community with impunity and they’re still late and overbudget.

      No. All the charm and little businesses that made Eglinton great will shut down. Instead, we’ll get some Shoppers Drug Marts and other chain stores and generic condos to replace them.
