@Skynet Once the Americans pull out another Company will come in either it will be the Chinese Company or a Russian Company. Any bauxite Company will takeover if the American Company decides to leave and all of the Politicians would have to give back all of the money that the American Company gave them in order to obtain the Rights to dig for bauxite. Which I am sure the Politicians would fight tooth and nail for to keep in their pockets.

To the entire Vice News team, on behalf of ALL Jamaicans, I want to say THANK YOU. Thank you for seeing the need to tell this story and follow up with it. Jamaica like many other countries is raped of its natural resources for false profit! The REAL treasure that should be exported from our island is our FOOD, agriculture is the most overlooked asset of our country as the world dives into the boom of GMO. We as an Island needed to SEE this, the severity of what is taking place is not being highlighted locally. My Jamaicans, here , there and everywhere what more do we need to see to stand up ???

    • @teerich2011
      @teerich2011 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

The one thing I'm most proud of as a Jamaican is that the food naturally grown doesn't have GMO and is delicious. Living in America its hard to get Jamaican good if you don't grow it or live in Florida. Many of us Living overseas would greatly appreciate more access to Jamaican grown produce and Jamaican baked foods. It's unfortunate there's not enough exporting of these to America and easier access to these goods especially in comparison to other international countries

I was about to say the same.
Here in Australia we have had to deal with this stuff and face up to and own some damn ugly mistakes from the past and we are still far from settling it.
There's been some seriously ugly stuff that has been done in the island states around Australia and some of it has involved Australian companies. The big problem is that no matter what government we elect they promise change and deliver NOTHING.
You are so right this happening all over the world and its all to the benefit of a small minority of billionaires.

Not a small handful. There is maybe a 1% superrich elite, but underneath that there is definitely a surrounding bunch in layers from 10% to more that all still are benefiting of thieving and pillaging in the now and money from the past. Aka the upper middle class.
Privilege is like interest on top of money in the bank in that way.
And vice versa with the marginalised and the people that were and are exploited.
The irony lies in the rage of the idiot lower class that is fighting against brown and black instead of joining forces and exteralise their rage to the ones that is really doing the plowing..up their behinds.

America has lands that contain bauxite but they don't give them no permits to mine it or it is very difficult for the companies because there are so much regulation. These companies then goes to a poor country with almost no regulation and very corrupt politicians that they can bribe, places such as Jamaica, Haiti,Guyana and Congo in Africa

What about the citizens that own land that have resources like ground water, a ground fed pond, minerals in the ground, etc, should the person that owns that property have the value of the property stolen out from under him by others who had nothing to do with the property? If you vote by direct democracy you're just allowing mob rule to decide what to do with it, and that is a slippery slope, next thing you know everyone's personal property will end up being subject to being taken away as soon as the mob feels they can profit from it.

    • @mwill2509

Saying he doesn’t know the towns there then in the same breath saying most of the lands remained untouched. Since, I know that Mining company has been there for years, I always wondered where in my country they were finding such an "infinite" supply. I found it deeply concerning, wondering if they had dug deep enough to find the center of the Earth. I really don't like this industry for this reason: Taking away from our land to benefit the advancement of other nations.
I think we need to find other ways to contribute to GDP than this. We survived the demise of the Sugar Revolution, we surely can do without this industry. They have had too many years of our land. They have overstayed their welcome and it is time for them to go.

I heard an expert on a local Jamaican tv show said bauxite mining contributed about 3% to the GDP around US $1B in contrast the cost of bauxite in terms of social and environment impact was around US$18B. There's been bauxite mining in Jamaica since the 1950s. We all know its a finite resource but our leaders didn't have and still doesn't have a vision of us moving away from mining.

I'm from Clarendon so I've seen this first hand. My father worked for ALCOA. They moved an entire neighborhood to build a new mud lake. That's a lake of mud filled with chemicals as a waste product of the bauxite process. I rode my bicycle up on one of them as a kid with my cuz, that thing bubbles and sizzles like a volcano, but its mud.

Those mud lakes starts out as watery muddy caustic soda sludge filled with other heavy metals that are left after they extract the raw bauxite mineral, it is highly toxic, highly alkaline, it seeps into the water table of the fresh water wells and poisons everything that drinks it, you start to see a lot of cancers popping up around the island now

That interview with the Mining Minister Audley; the way he swallows, rubs his hands, looks down to hide his gaze and smiles... he is very cognizant of the gravity of the conflict of interest and duality of the government's actions.

You can't steal our Bauxite. You can't tell me there has been mining for 70yrs, and then act like another 70yrs of mining would be beneficial. I've been to the land where my mom and my grandparents grew up and parts of it have been mined, and they weren't made rich. My uncle lived in the same shack his father did. Part of what makes the people of Jamaica is the land and the food. Anyone promoting mining operations who doesn't live near them is a crook. Strip mining lush vegetation and leaving barren soil behind is not progress by any metric. You do not need money, but you do need water, food, and shelter, which Bauxite in the ground can provide. How many rolls of aluminum foil do we really need?

What Audley is saying makes no sense. The mining takes place in pockets of land, yes. But if you keep approving for more and more pockets of land to be mined, it adds up. The fact that we're no longer the world's leader in bauxite mining shows that we're running out. When that happens, what next? And he's saying they need to "focus more intensely on the interests of our citizens". The whole video shows the people most affected by the mining don't want it. Then, at the end, the say it's a closed case? That seems democratic? The man said we neva put Andrew in power for this.

    • @gilanapatrick

The Government should recuse itself from this affair as it is likely that only a few principals sitting at the current negotiating table will benefit financially via modes of compensation that should be subject to third party internal audit. The island's ecosystem is under threat at time when global warming and other climate and environmental factors threaten water resources around the world. Water is a vital resource and Jamaica with its 200 rivers should e protected. Mining in Jamaica is not really competitive on the international market, there's no scale. But there's enough ore for some people to make money if costs can be controlled. They need to get rid of the mining sector totally. Destroying your Land to enrich some company in Louisiana makes no sense. Even though I live in a foreign country, it grieves me to see my people suffer at the hand of a worthless government. As a public servant, your purpose is to serve the public's interest, not your pockets.

Life started in Jamaica with the Jamaican Brown Skin Black Indian Little Girls. They exist. They are indigenous to this universe. The little brown skin black girls. Where is the man in 1 billion years who ever physically created a constitutional bill of right for the sovereign rights of the indigenous inhabitants of this place. What these minors are doing is, these people are doing is transfer Jamaica asset to another soil. So in 1200 years from now. When scientists analyze the origin of things. They will be tricked into coming up with stories about its origin.

So you're against the government mining natural resources to benefit the people of Jamaica? You rather the resources sit idle and then you turn around blaming politicians for keeping us poor?
