Because none of the guys that actually knew how to fight from the afl were involved lol. Greg Stafford would’ve pounded them to death. When Richmond had a pro fighter that was champion in his class visit they sparred and Stafford beat the shit out of him.

Mark Geyer......what a fucken maniac on the field.........not just a belter, his draw and pass and offload game up the centre against the big boys was unreal too.......tough bastard..good heart
I'm sure a big factor in this was the fact that AFL 'hard men" kind of just intimidate smaller players. Whereas rugby league hard men (at this time anyway) had to be able to fight other hard men. I seriously doubt Monkhurst would have ever actually gone toe to toe with someone that big and aggressive before. He gave it a good go, but there is just no substitute for being in 100 fights.
They always mention Wally like he was a pansie or something, funny how these commentators don't know that Wally had a fierce reputation amongst fellow players as someone who could really fight.
