Oh yeah, a tip for beginners, getting synthetic brushes would be a better option. Not only is it more affordable, it is also much easier to take care of compared to mixed or real hair brushes.
Damn I can't seem to be able to find the synthetic squirrel, I asked a person at a zoo and they looked at me weird, how rude! Any tips on finding a synthetic squirrel? :(
Wow, I always thought mix hair brushes were bad quality for money but they seem so nice. The brushes I have now for watercolor are 2 waterbrushes, an escoda sable travel brush, 5 of the squirrel quill brushes by da vinci, and 2 round sables from da vinci. I like the squirrel quills the best. Thanks for this video!
Hi Teoh! Thanks for this great review, very instructive! Which paints did you use for the tests? The second color (the blue) is gorgeous! (Is it a mix?)
Mimik High Performance Synthetic Squirrel Hair Watercolor Brushes are really nice to paint with and they are some of the best priced that I have found.
You can buy Roubloff Kolinsky Sable brushes in a set off of ebay for $9-$10 USD per brush. They ship from Russia, so I'd assume the price would be similar around the world. Edit: That's for their Master series brushes, their highest end series.
Hello again Teoh. ^_^ I wish the water brush companies would work on making longer lasting bristles. If one could get half a year out of water brushes that would be a pretty good time frame and very affordable.
NICE REVIEW,,, i paint in detail style in focused area and loose style in background. i used to use kolinsky sable since it was labeled as watercolor elite brush, but later i tried a kazan squirrel brush.. i was shocked that the kazan would perform better than kolinsky in my painting style, they say that kazan was for washes only, but i can do a detail painting with it.. i think its not about the hair, its how you use it... and the rest is personal preference.
Who wants an affordable watercolor brush?? An excellent quality brush is worth every penny, and gives the best results. There are some good ones that aren’t too pricey, like the Silver Velvet black squirrel brushes. Dick Blick sable brushes are nice too, and not very expensive. I see it as an investment, and if you take care of them, they will last a long, long time. I do wish someone would come out with synthetic brushes that perform as good as the animal hair brushes, for the sake of the animals.
The video is for beginners who are just starting out, They're gonna buy the higher quality ones once they know how to use them properly using a cheaper one first
Well I got a Kolinsky sable brush, Series 7.. (winsor and newton size 00) and the hairs splay so easily... I got a Cotman watercolor brush (synthetic) and Ive been using it for a month now, it holds up a point sooooo much better than sable brushes :/
That's the Canson XL Mix Media pad (300gsm). It's good for practice for not for actual artwork because the horizontal texture is too distracting. That's why I use it to create swatches for this video. I'm trying to use it up. See the full review at www.parkablogs.com/picture/review-canson-xl-mix-media-paper-300gsm
Great review! I just want to ask if you have a video about paper comparison ? i always use cason 200 gsm cold press and other than that i dont have much experience with papers. I saw some people online saying that good paper is important to watercolor projects. Thanks! and have a great day :)
I don't have any paper comparison unfortunately. There are too many brands out there to compare. So it's difficult to make such a video. Perhaps in the future.
Thank you for the great video review, Teoh! Very detailed and informative, especially the differences between the types of hair. Was wondering if you have reviewed the Silver Black Velvet line of mix-haired brushes?
Hi Teoh. Thanks for a comprehensive video. As a vegan, I am limited to synthetic bushes but the following quote is interesting. Synthetic watercolour brushes have superior spring in them over a sable .Synthetics are manufactured with hollows along the shaft of the bristle to simulate the natural hair and increasing the water holding capacity of the brushes. (via Experimental Guru Blogspot)
martynsnan I'm not vegan but want to be one day be when I am well enough to but I still feel the same way about only using synthetic brushes. I could never use animal hair brushes, ever! Just thought I'd show support from someone who isn't vegan to show how important it is NOT to use animal hair brushes as I feel it's the same as wearing a real fur coat.
Thanks Sophie. I've been doing my bit by providing the local art shops with a list of vegan art supplies as best as I can ascertain it. It's a compilation of information from the Internet and replies I've received from manufacturers. I've learnt a lot about what goes into the materials and there are quite a few surprises there. Seems like the job is never-ending. Best wishes for your vegan journey when you are able to start it.
Yay! Another compassionate artist! I’m a longtime vegetarian (amost thirty years now... I became a veg when I was 13…) The only “real” brush I have is the one that came with my Senneliers - I find there are plenty of synthetic or imitation brushes (the ones made with synthetic fibers) that are comparable and they work wonderfully. I actually find the “real” ones too mushy. The only benefit I have found to “real” brushes is that they don’t fuzz/fray as easily with heavy use. But I’d rather replace my brushes more often than have that money going to support the gruesome ways that fur is removed from the animals. It’s just a personal choice. I know not everyone feels this way, but people should know that the imintations and synthetics they have now (especially the Escoda) are JUST as good, better priced, and easily available. If you feel like choosing a synthetic, go for it!
martynsnan Have you ever eaten anything with gelatin or used glue before? Because both are made from bones. I do not hate vegans or anything of that sort, I think it is an awesome thing to do, but there is a point where you separate yourself from a regular human life so much, that it becomes difficult to get anything done. It is just a little extreme is all I think to not use sable brushes, especially because it is not very common to kill for hair.
I just saw the review, thank you very much! I am tempted to buy the skoda, because I don't really like the use of animals... I didn't find it on amazon France however... I'll try to find it on another shop. Thank you anyway I loved the video, it was really helpfull!!
Hi Teoh, Nice review. Haven't commented in a while. I hope you missed me. You gave good information about the type of brushes used in watercolor painting and their characteristics. You sort of passed over the water brushes which we use a lot when we're out an about. I know you've reviewed them before. Anyway wanted to say nice review and Hi! Your faithful follower, Kathy B. (fairylady0227)
High Teoh, Many thanks for your good explanations about different brushes as I am now change to mixed or natural brush from synthetic one. Can you recommend me whether I can purchase Da vinchi wooden boxed set through the internet without seeing the conditions of each brush? Because I can not see the boxed brushes which you had in the video in the shop in my town and have to buy only through the internet. Your advice much appreciated.
There's no way to check the conditions if you buy it online. But it should be fine if you're buying the wooden box set because the brush will not be moving around in the box. They are pressed down by foam tightly in the box. There are different box sets at different prices here amzn.to/2mqB48D
Hi Teoh Yi Ci. Im looking brush #2, #4 which good for detailing, hold more water but not too expensive as winsor newton or escoda. What is your advice. Thank you :)
can you please review art secret brushes is a brand in aliexpress they have wonderful brushes in very affordable prices (im not related to them any how but i will reely want to know what you think about them)
Oh yeah, a tip for beginners, getting synthetic brushes would be a better option. Not only is it more affordable, it is also much easier to take care of compared to mixed or real hair brushes.
It is very helpful to see the performance of the different types of brushes. Thank you.
Thanks \ (•◡•) /
I already caught the squirrels, one natural and one synthetic. Any tutorial on how to make the brushes?
+O i I think you can search for how watercolor brushes are made. I saw a video by Escoda or Da Vinci. Can't remember.
Where did you find synthetic squirrels? Do they eat synthetic acorns?

Thank you for the research you've done...truth is I had no idea about which water color brushes to use. Very helpful.
Thank you :-)
I was looking for brushes, but didn´t know the diffrence between syntethic, mixed and sable, so your performance was really helpful, ty!
Hello again Teoh. ^_^ I wish the water brush companies would work on making longer lasting bristles. If one could get half a year out of water brushes that would be a pretty good time frame and very affordable.
I've tried one waterbrush with natural hair and they fall out so easily.

Have you ever used the Princeton Neptune series? They are synthetic brush that mimics squirrelskolinskys as well
Thanks for the helpful video. I have the exact same flat squirrel mix brush from Da Vinci. I make some nice washes with it.

+Lene Fischer I try to keep it clean and seldom wear at home especially when using art materials, the messy types.
What sort of life do you expect from any of these brushes - can you hang on to a sable brush for many years if you look after it well?
These can last if you take care of them
