  • Today you're going to see my tutorial video for Mice And Mystics go live, which yes, was first created in 2012. However, it was posted on the Plaid Hat Games TH-cam channel at the time, and although I also had it uploaded here, I never made my version public - and then I forgot about it! However, I rediscovered it today and thought I should make it public here as well, to go along with all the game plays - so if you see that older video appearing and you're wondering why - that's why! Also: White Polo throwback!
In this video, we're going to learn how to play Mice And Mystics! If you have any comments or questions, please do not hesitate to post them in the TH-cam comments below.
CORRECTION: At 18:42 it is stated that the maximum number of small minions to a space is three, however, it is actually the usual four.

Rodney Smith and the Fountain of Youth. What do we learn when we watch this video, apart from the rules to this amazing game? That Rodney has always been a natural talent when it came to explaining games. He is really the best in the industry. I sometimes watch his videos even if I have zero interest in the game, just to see him explaining stuff 😀 Keep up the great work! Yours, Thomas

@@WatchItPlayedI second the comment above. Rodney is the best. When I was first getting back into hobby games after playing some years ago, I bought Mice and Mystics to play with my kids. I opened it up and tried to learn how to play from the rule book. All their expectant faces waiting to play the game, plus me being completely lost about terms like initiative track resulted in me being brought to literal tears (I was pregnant at the time…so there is that)
I packed it up and regretted buying and trying a game clearly beyond what I was up to. I almost gave up on trying anything beyond Sushi Go ever again. Then I found this video by Rodney explaining it in a completely friendly and simple way and I tried playing again (by myself this time) and then with the kids and we have had fun playing a wide range of games ever since, because I always check is Rodney has a “how to play” video before buying the game….and then I watch it a few times. Its thanks to you Rodney that my family of 7 is solid gamers now, right on down to the 2 hr old who loves to pull games off the shelf and “play” them with me. Can’t say thank you enough. 😊

I bought this game because of your review nearly a decade ago! I still haven't finished the campaign because sometime between then and now my daughter became a teenager and playing games with dad became not as "cool" as it once was. Now that she's almost off to college she's come around, so there's still hope. I need to know how this thing ends!

This is a good opportunity to tell you Rodney, that this video is what brought me into the hobby. I had played Settlers of Catan a lot and I decided I should look into more modern board games. I went to BGG and saw Mice and Mystics on the hotness list (it had just been released), then I found your how to play and gameplay videos which helped me decide that the game was right for me, and learn to play it. Thank you so much for helping me dive in to board games with this video and everything you have done since.

Seeing this posted today brought back some great memories. I fondly recall first watching this video two years ago with my then seven-year-old son after picking up this game at a used game sale. We felt well armed to play through the campaign after watching, and I have been singing Rodney’s praises as a board game teacher ever since. Mice and Mystics was our first of many modern board games and this video helped open that world to us. It is amazing to think how far you (and this channel) have come since you first filmed this; thanks for being such an outstanding member of our hobby!

This video of Mice and Mystics (M & M) just shows how much you have progressed on explaining on how to play a game. Comparing how you explain a game like M & M to how you explain games today there is a massive improvement (just as I hoped there would be). I would be a good idea if 3 or 4 times a year you drop on us an ancient how to play video from years past just to remind us how much you and the channel have improved. Hello. Wow, a Rodney Throwback. It had me confused for a moment with the dates but now I see why.
I am just diving into this game and had a quick question. You say, and so do the rules, that anytime mice explore a tile for the first time, you draw an encounter card. Does this mean that at the start of any of the chapters, after initial set up, and drawing the initiative order, you draw an encounter card, thereby adding even more minions to the start tile before any actions are taken? Thanks
