The sound balance is excellent, good but not overpowering base and clean mid tones and highs.Cons: The noise cancellation is good but perhaps a little less effective than the Bose ANC on the 1st gen buds. Passthrough mode as not as good as the 1st gen buds making it a little more difficult to hear conversations when in passthrough.
Earbuds were the most used headphone well before the iPod came out. Also Sony walkmans and diskmans of the 90s came with Sony ear buds. Those older style over ear headphones were more popular in the 80s.

You forgot Apple’s iPhone Bluetooth headset launched in 2007. It was a black Bluetooth earpiece that came with a nice dock allowing you to charge the original iPhone and the Bluetooth headset. I think it sold for $129 and then $99
I had iPhones since the iPhone 4. The headphones that came with the iPhone 4 were crap but I used them until I got a better pair of earbuds from Senheisser. Then I used the earbuds that came with the iPhone 6. A huge step up from the ones that came with the iPhone 4 but I used those for a brief moment until I started buying bluetooth headphones, mostly because I got the iPhone 7. They did good until I finally got my AirPods this week. Now I realize my struggles were finally paying off.

Aside from that I gotta comment on this, the EarPods' design is the best design for a headphone I have ever used, I loved it that much that even though I didn't have an iPhone (I had a Samsung Galaxy phone) I used the EarPods that came with my iPod even though it didn't have a microphone and volume buttons. After a year I lost those and I found a pair of EarPods with microphone on a friend's car (I made sure it was his or his parents so it was forgotten, not stolen) and I held on to those until I also lost them after another year, it was hell using other earphones so on 2018 I got my iPhone and I think I cared more about my EarPods than my phone 😅 I used them until they were turning yellowish and the rubber was starting to tear up and falling a little bit since I carried them in my pockets, bags, and everywhere, on late 2019 I bought a new pair to use this year when they stopped working and indeed I switched in early 2020 but the old ones are still working, although not perfectly. Now here I am using 1st gen AirPods because I prefer the same EarPods' design, and I will keep using those until they stop working or their battery doesn't last enough, maybe then I'd buy 2nd gen ones or 3rd gen if the design doesn't change much but I don't plan on buying AirPods Pro, they seem too small for me and I honestly don't like those tips, the EarPods' design fit my ear perfectly and those years of R&R were truly taken advantage of.
You should have covered also some of the problems earpods and airpods have. I own both. With earpod, I cannot use it with Macbook even with that adapter because it doesn’t convert lightening connector to 3.5 jack which MacBook supports. With AirPods I face constant disconnection issue with MacBook. If I carry a 3.5 mm earphone to use with Mac I have to carry adapter.

I’ve had them all except the ear monitors. I’ve had my AirPods Pro for about 2 weeks now and at first they were very uncomfortable but I guess my ears have adjusted to them and they’re no longer uncomfortable to wear. Still my first generation AirPods fit better and were more comfortable to wear compared to my AirPods Pro.

I'd like to correct you: the iPod Touch did not come with the earbuds with the remotes. They had ones without a remote so it made sense to sell those with a remote separately.
