    "I'm Buffy, the Vampire Slayer, and you are?" isn't just a quipy line or even just refusing to say "No one". All this time Buffy was trying to deny who she is. Trying not to be the Vampire Slayer. Trying not even to be Buffy. So far as to change her name and try to change her identity. That was her embracing it again. Reclaiming her destiny.

    Joyce's talk with Giles was so adult, compared to how the "kids" deal with things. Joyce laid out her objections and concerns and Giles acknowledged them and accepted the fault. It was never fair to Joyce to be kept out of the loop about her daughter's supernatural job and it really wasn't healthy for Buffy to keep such a secret from her mom. Giles as representative of the Council of the Watchers was unfair to uphold that particular rule especially since all the other rules were broken with Willow, Xander and everyone else who knew. And also the Angel issue.

    • @nickreacts6394
      @nickreacts6394  2 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      I'm personally don't have a clear answer for how Giles and the gang could have involved Joyce well (perhaps a good topic for a stream), but I do like how she communicated her concerns and problems to Giles... like you said, everything was laid out in a clear and adult manner (as opposed to holding a grudge or resentment). I don't know, I really enjoy the complexity in Joyce's character, and can empathize with her dilemma as being the (newly informed) Mom of the Slayer. I'm interested to see what happens with her this Season...

      @@nickreacts6394 I agree Joyce is written so well. And yes it's complicated. I completely understand it from Joyce's perspective as a mother but I cannot ignore the supernatural element of this show. Giles is not a mentor in a normal sense in my eyes and because Buffy is dealing with things so far beyond her years (life and death, choosing duty over true love), I do not see her as a normal teenager either. Because of that, I do think telling Joyce should have been up to Buffy, especially since Joyce knowing affects her job as a slayer and it would put Joyce in danger too. In Ep 2, we already see a glimpse of Joyce's naive outlook on Buffy being a Slayer...so for me personally, it really wasn't fair for Joyce to place full responsibility on to Giles.

    • @luc-i-guess
      @luc-i-guess 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@nickreacts6394 Sorry for such a long reply, I've watched this show 10 times over and have some thoughts.
      My main instinct is to feel bad for Joyce, as someone who had a mother who dealt with some bullshit. However, I can't in good faith say I agree or completely empathize with Joyce for the simple but complicated fact that her daughter is THE CHOSEN ONE. The whole idea of this show is that Buffy has been forced to become an adult before any of her peers, burdened with this responsibility that no one can ever truly know, unless you are a chosen slayer yourself.
      Joyce has a right to be mad, but it's misplaced, because it was her words that sent her daughter away after all. Not to mention she has not necessarily on Buffy's side with things like Robot Boyfriend, nor has she been a strong parental support of Buffy in the show so far; that has fallen onto Giles' back alone.
      And in general, why blame Giles?: a man burdened with the responsibility of caring for the most powerful teenager in the world and knowing that she very well might die before she reaches full adulthood. Hell, she already has died! Really, Joyce is but a minute detail in all of this from a save-the-world perspective.
      Too many layers exist in the Scoobies' lives to consider bringing Joyce into the madness. Buffy told multiple strangers in the first or second episode that she was the slayer, and Giles barely made a peep about it, so I'm sure it was ultimately Buffy's decision to not tell Joyce anyway. Giles simply would not step out of line in this case and tell her, not is it in the world's best interest for him to cut ties from Buffy, "giving Joyce her daughter back" in a sense.
      I believe we are meant to see this show through the perspective of Buffy. And through the protagonist's eyes, I know that she doesn't believe Giles holds any fault.
      Joyce is holding onto her daughter now that she's already failed as a parent and let her stray too far.

    • @BalletBullet1
      @BalletBullet1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Do you really think that Joyce or any parent would have accepted their daughter to be a vampire slayer?

    • @Ebbagull
      @Ebbagull 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@luc-i-guess I completely agree!
      I've always resented Joyce for a lot of things. I know she tries, and I understand that Buffy loves her, but she kind of sucks sometimes. She's unfair and a far worse parent than Giles. She refuses to take responsibility for her mistakes and doesn't apologize to Buffy for anything. She's not terrible, as these things go, but as a child, I hated her, and loved Giles so deeply. When he makes mistakes, he apologizes. He *sees* Buffy, and never tries to make her into something else. Giles is an enormous part of why Buffy is so unique in the long line of slayers. Why she isn't alone, why she becomes so strong. Joyce is the kind of parent I wouldn't feel I could trust with all of me, or all of my mistakes, unlike Giles.

    Buffy does have a tendency to go off on her own, shut people out, and try to deal with her issues herself. I think that might be some kind of innate slayer tendency. But I'm so glad she has friends that don't let her do that, and are there for her even when she doesn't think she wants them to be.

    • @nickreacts6394
      @nickreacts6394  2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Yes! I have mixed feelings about this tendency, and I think balance is really the key here. It's usually a mistake not knowing when you need help and stubbornly trying to handle everything alone. On the other hand, I think that certain people just need some distance/ alone time to clear their mind and resolve to move past a problem or trauma. But I like how you pointed out that certain friends don't let Buffy isolate when she actually needs help (very cool), although the events of next episode (who kidnapped the real Xander and Willow?) is a whole OTHER topic of discussion haha...

    Yeah, this episode does not help with the character motivations of Buffy’s friends in Dead Mans Party, haha. That episode is a big gripe for a lot of the fandom. Like, even though they don’t realize she killed a Souled Angel, they still realize she had to kill Angel, the love of her life, got kicked out of school, and got kicked out of her house (assuming Joyce told them that). Any one of those things would warrant a break to deal with your trauma.

    As a teenager when this first aired, I was furious with Joyce for blaming Giles. As an adult (even without kids), I'm 100% on Joyce's side. If I found out my teenage daughter was having a parental relationship with a grown man I barely knew, who not only pushed her into a job that routinely risked her life but also encouraged her to hide it from me so I couldn't advocate for her safety on her behalf? That's a giant red flag. Like, yeah, Joyce kicked Buffy out, but that was an emergency last-ditch effort to keep her daughter from a potentially dangerous situation, and none of it ever happens if Giles just sits Joyce down in the beginning and explains. I love Giles, I do, but he deserved every last word of that dressing down and then some.

    A very gorgeus episode!
    1- Joyce wasn't right in her angry against Giles but her angry was understandable. She knows that Buffy ran away because of the words he addressed to her, but the idea is so painful that it leads her to preferably blame the other adult figure in her daughter's life. In short, Giles finds himself in the role of her father who had a more important role in his daughter's life than her mother, he who is also Buffy's Observer and in Joyce's eyes easily the one who pushed her to be her Slayer. True on the one hand, but we do know that Buffy then accepted her role as her heroine, prior to the previous season's finale.
    2- Cordelia and Xander are absolutely hilarious! His immaturity and her self-centeredness make them appear constantly and close to breaking up, and instead they manage to find a way to make their relationship work, to settle their quarrels and even to be Vampire-Slayers too! XD
    3- The beauty of the episode is obviously due to the magnificent story arc that leads to Buffy's homecoming. The protagonist experiences a real personal Hell, before she ends up there too, and it is when she touches the bottom that her extraordinary rebirth of her begins again, symbolized by that fantastic joke with which she also breaks the 4th wall.
    Buffy understands the importance of being herself, in her case a heroine, and not being able to escape her pain but knowing how to deal with it. Even more splendid is how Buffy inspires others with her goodness and courage. If Lily really takes her example, she will certainly be able to rebuild her life after the mistakes made with vampires and demons.

    Wow. That would have been a jolt to begin on episode 2. To be fair to you: I get mad at the scoobies even having seen episode 1 first. lol I'm glad you weren't upset with Joyce. We have to remember the context of how little she knew. And you said it perfectly of finding out about such a relationship between your child and another adult.

  • @menachemsalomon
    @menachemsalomon 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Did you notice that the "first day back at school" was a single shot, some three minutes long?
    About Joyce and Giles: Joyce is understandably and rightfully furious at Giles. A relationship with a child behind the parent's back is unacceptable, and in any other circumstance I'd call it grooming. No, Giles didn't take advantage of Buffy, but other Watchers, other Slayers, may well have. But Joyce is lashing out because she does feel guilty: Buffy left town because of what her mother said, and Joyce knows that. She does blame herself, and is covering for it by blaming Giles.

    Even if you had watched episode one first, I don't know many fans who enjoy it. So that will be interesting. Personally, I like this one because Buffy's family and friends aren't around to judge her. The one thing Xander says in this episode that he should have remembered when episode two came along was, "She'll come back when she's ready." Indicating he knows or suspects she was going through something. I always hope its underlying guilt from lying to her having a bad outcome, but that's a different comment/argument/debate. But as episode two shows, the group didn't care why Buffy left and made it all about their issues once she was away. It shows to me, (running away wasn't necessarily a good idea even with Joyce mouthing off to not come back), Buffy being away from the group for a while definitely wasn't a bad thing.
    The crew's quality shot up drastically with this episode.

    Buffy's "coming out" as a Slayer to her mother has often been compared to coming out of a gay person. If we keep going with that metaphor, does her anger at Giles still work, I often wondered?

    • @Henrik_Holst
      @Henrik_Holst 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Her anger with Giles doesn't even work without it because Buffy:s "secret relationship" with Giles is not the reason Joyce threw Buffy out of her home. But to continue with the metaphor this is basically her blaming Giles for making Buffy gay with the unspoken context of this somehow making it ok for Joyce to throw her out. I guess that this is what you where aiming for, I just had to vent a little.

      @@123animit Well to me the "Have you thought about not being the slayer anymore" and "it's because you never had a strong father figure isn't it" or the "but it stops now!" combined with it being 1997 that makes me feel that we are talking about a parent that (at this moment) believes that being gay (or a slayer) is a choice and not something that you are.
      As you write, none of it justifies her throwing Buffy out anyway.

    • @Logan_Baron
      @Logan_Baron 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As a metaphor it still fits. Finding out a whole secret life of her daughter. Not just that she was a certain way, but that she lived a whole other life around that. It would be that her daughter was gay, and not just Being gay, but living a secret lifestyle, and having someone that was a big part of it, and part of keeping it secret from her. It's not like there's a trope or some kind of stereotype that Giles would fit into as someone in that lifestyle, but just the idea that he was part of a HUGE part of her childs life that she didn't even know about, still fits.

    Love seeing you go from suspicious of Lily to fiercely protective of her! She's my favourite part of this episode - she's absolutely a mirror of Buffy - someone lonely and helpless in the big city, suddenly alone and grieving the love of her life - but she's also a reminder to Buffy of how many lives she's touched. Lily's someone who's now been saved by Buffy twice - three times if you count giving her a job and apartment at the end. And that's exactly what Buffy needed in this episode - a reminder of who she is and why she fights. Lily taking the name Anne at the end is just the perfect representation of how important Buffy is to the rest of the world. 🥲

    About Joyce, I think she's right in being mad at Giles, because Buffy is a teenager. However, I don't agree with blaming him for her leaving. I can still understand Joyce being mad and saying something she maybe doesn't mean. It'd be so stressful to not know where your daughter is.

      Yeah, I'd say that's an important distinction... Joyce can be upset to be so out of the loop and blame Giles for this (not sure whether it's fair, but understandable). But to place the blame on Giles for Buffy leaving? I think that's Joyce fearing for her daughter, and taking that fear out on Giles in an emotional way. And next episode... well, plenty to discuss when that one comes out I'll just say that for now...
