    Two fun facts:
    1. Hagfish do the most advanced Yoga to do what other animals do with jaws. To tear a junk of flesh from a carcass they turn their practically boneless body into a knot and push the knot against the carcass. To them, spineless (they have a chorda dorsalis, just not a fully developed spine) is not an insult, it's an approval of their badass yoga skills.
    2. Sea snakes can only survive in areas with rain. The reason for that is that they need to drink from the thin layer of fresh water that forms during heavy rain to survive. Some go for extended periods of time without water, but they still need to drink at some point.

Swimming snakes rarely, if ever, bite humans. This goes for land snakes like cottonmouths, too. As long as they're in water, snakes just tend to be a lot less defensive. Maybe it's just because they can retreat much more easily in comparison to our ability to pursue them.

    • @bigsam8597
      @bigsam8597 3 ปีที่แล้ว +20

@Connor MacArthur Actually it's because they don't want to waste their venom on people. They like to use it for hunting prey, not defending themselves from danger. Also if a snake were to bite somebody, there's nothing stopping the person from just immediately stomping the snake to death. The person may still die, but their death will take longer.

I saw this off the coast of Okinawa Japan, two broke off and chased my ass first to the nearest rock then to the shore. The only reason I think I beat/escaped them was because 1) I was scared for my life. 2) I had on flippers.

I did a little reading about the Orcas attacking boats. Apparently one of the biologists said that the surge of attacks happened right after everything opened back up after the pandemic. All of those boats, ferries, whale watchers, etc in that major shipping route were off the water during that time and probably made life for the Orca less stressful. The biologist went on to speculate that these sentient creatures might just be expressing anger at the return of the boats.

That's where people come in and ensure he's in a tub of sea water and given time to rest, you can usually handle them afterwards without fear as they know they'd be dead by now if you were really trying to eat it.

Fun fact: a pod of orcas once was involved in a mutualistic relationship with humans. Not just random humans either; *whalers.* One specific group of whalers, in fact; the Davidson family.
This pod, named killers of Eden (of course) was found in Australia (of course) somewhere around the year 1895s. The pod was led by an alpha known as Old Tom.
These whales would corner baleen whales, pushing it from below, while Old Tom himself would swim in front of the Davidson's whaling station and slap its tail on the surface to alert the family. While the whalers prepare themselves to go out to sea, Old Tom would return to their pod and *herd the baleen whale towards the rowboats of the Davidson family.* They have learned to distinguish the green rowboats of the Davidson family from the white rowboats of other whalers.
The whalers would follow the law of the tongue... As this pod were actively assisting the whalers, no harm were to be done to them.
... Unfortunately for both parties, whaling industries eventually experienced sharp decline, and no baleen whales were sighted at Eden after 1926. Old Tom still returned yearly however, and at some point returning alone without his pod... The likely reason being most/the entire pod was hunted by Norwegian whalers further north desperate for income, unaware of this particular pod's unique relationship.
Eventually the baleen whales returned, and Old Tom continued to bring them towards the Davidson family (doing so on his own, apparently), before he was found dead at 1930. Apparently the Davidson family damaged Old Tom's teeth during a particularly intense whaling in the middle of a storm, leading to an infection that eventually ended its life...

Okay. Stone fish are NO JOKE.
Hands down scariest experience of my life was snorkeling in Fiji and watching my brother unknowingly ALMOST PUT HIS FOOT DOWN RIGHT ON A ROCK FISH. I screamed as loud as I could through my snorkel because it can make a loud sound above the water, and thank GOD it caught his attention and he turned around to look at me, I motioned him to swim towards me, and once he was a couple feet away from the poison menace, I put my hand up in a “stop there and wait for me” signal. I swam over and I slowly pointed my finger directly at the rock fish, which he STILL couldn’t see! I make the ASL signs for rock and fish (most of us in my family know a little bit because my other brothers best friend growing up was fully deaf), and as soon as my oldest brother understood what he was looking at, I heard him gasp so hard he actually inhaled sea water and needed to surface for a minute and hang on to the back of our boat to clear it out from his lungs and sinuses. Scariest day of my life. His foot was two inches away from ending up in a coffin. We were in FIJI IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE ON AN UNINHABITED ISLAND THAT REQUIRES SPECIAL PERMISSION TO VISIT FROM THE KING. THE NEAREST HOSPITAL WOULD HAVE BEEN A 24 hour ADVENTURE to try and get there.
For record? To arrive at our destination in Fiji from where our trip would be departing, we took three airplanes of decreasing sizes, all Boeing’s however. Then a 2 hour van ride to an “Air port” with a single engine plane, and an airstrip where they were still shooing the cows out of the way so our 10 PERSON PLANE (including the 15year old and 19year old pilots) could take off. Before boarding, they weighed everyone and their luggage, then did about 45 minutes of mathematical debate about how to arrange the plane so the sides would be as even as possible. We took our seats and prayed. We landed, entered another bus for some time, and then finally, we saw it-our home for the next three weeks. An 80 foot sailboat named the Tui Tai. It took multiple trips in a grey dinghy to get everyone onto our final destination. It had been almost 50 hours since we left our home for Chicago O’Hare airport. The longest, most worth it commute in my entire life. Got certified as an open water diver by a Fijian hottie named Owen who loved to tell us which animal bites his multiple scars were, especially the ones that had ruined tattoos he had earned. One day he pointed at this massive double sided semi-circle scar on his forearm and said, “I ever told you what to do if a juvie Hammerhead decides it wants to see if you’re on the menu?”
Needless to say my mouth dropped open and I tentatively began running my hands over his scar, noticing how crazy it was. “He must not have gotten it stitched,” I thought…..I could totally picture him being like “yeah whatever it’ll be gone in a few weeks; I’ll cover it when I freedive so nothing smells me alright?”
I asked, “Well what CAN you do that situation? I know it’s head is shaped differently…but wouldn’t I just do the same thing with any other shark that mistakenly took a bite?” with a tentative grin, unsure id been correct. But he broke into his insanely wide palette, perfectly white smile that all Fijians seem to possess, and said, “That’s my girl-and what is it?”
So together we said loudly, “WE PUNCH HIM IN THE EYES!!” And grinned. Since I was technically still in my certification course, I finished the complete scenario for rhetorical purposes.
“Then I swim for the boat as fast as I can, depth I’m at be damned. The Bends is survivable. Bleeding to death is not.”
PS: Owen could free dive (no breathing apparatus, just holding his breath) for almost 12 minutes, he could go down to 30 ft no problem WITHOUT weights, and walk around slowly on the sea floor with a SPEAR to catch us DINNER. HE WOULDN’T EVEN BREATHE HEAVILY WHEN HE RESURFACED. WTF. Was he a wizard or just a really really amazing Dive instructor? 😆
