I read a story about a blue-ring bite survivor. They were rescued from the surf as the paralysis really started kicking in properly. Lifeguards responded, did mouth-to-mouth and then employed a breathing mask. During all this they were forgetting the finer points of paralysis.. like the fact that you cannot move at all. While they were breathing for this poor person, they were stuck laying on the sand, staring directly into the sun. They survived the blue ring but went blind from their rescue

So about the sharks - my old friend used to be an animal trainer and worked at various aquariums. He said the reason you never see great whites in aquariums is because as soon as the bump their nose on the side of the enclosure, they'll go into that trance, stop moving, which means they don't have water moving over their gills, and they suffocate. One aquarium he worked at did get a great white and it lasted about 24 hours just because my friend was INSIDE the tank with it, physically moving it around so it wouldn't suffocate.... Which was obviously not sustainable. Poor shark :/
Edit: For anyone curious, my friend's name was Colonel Dave Harris, and he trained the original Flipper as well as Lolita the orca. Those animals do not deserve to be in captivity, but holy shit he's also got some amazing stories about them. He also did wild shark "wrangling" for the Sean Connery Bond movies before American Humane Society was a thing 😅

    • @themushroominside6540
      @themushroominside6540 2 ปีที่แล้ว +117

Whats so interesting about great whites is that they often go on long straight paths, rarely ever changing their direction especially if they are not hungry, this is primarily why they cannot be contained within a aquarium because they can often travel hundreds of kilometers before changing direction. The confines of an aquarium is just too small for them to survive, meaning they keep bumping into the walls pathetically until they suffocate or injure themselves to death.
Great whites are amazing predators, they should be respected but shouldn't be feared as fear only hurts them, they are important for the ecosystem by regulating their prey animals and allow for more diversity and sustainability in our oceanic food supply. They aren't out to get anyone though will nibble on you to see if you are food or not which can be fatal.

Finally, someone with decent advice on cougars.
I grew up in mountain lion territory and tbh, they’re not so bad. It’s mainly young males who’ve recently started hunting for themselves that are a threat. These guys have no territory and they’re usually pretty desperate, so they’ll target kids and pets. If you ever see one shot, you’ll notice how thin and scraggly they look. 🥺
The old males and the females aren’t so bad. The old man up near where I lived growing up was a cool dude. He was generally silent, you only knew he was there because you felt him watching. He did surprise my bro at the outhouse one time, while he was stalking a deer. All he did was hiss and keep going, tho.

I heard about that lion story on tv. They had a zoological dentist study the jawbone of one of the lions and he theorized that the reason the first lion started attacking the workers was because of its teeth. It showed signs of tooth decay and infection in the teeth that all lions need to chew. Therefore, chewing meat from zebras or wildebeests would have caused searing pain through the lion's jaw. Through instinct, it began to seek prey that had flesh that was considerably softer. The best candidate unfortunately turned out to be humans. The 2nd tagged along because misery loves company.

However, with coyotes, instead of trying to scare you away, they'll just follow and watch you from afar to make sure you aren't a threat and that you don't get too close, because they aren't really much into fighting and are also scared of humans.

It was also the most cold tolerant species of parrot native across most of the Eastern half of the US. Often called snow parrots. They were driven into extinction by the arrival of Europeans to the area. A real shame our only parrot species was driven into extinction. Also that mother cougar was protecting cubs nearby. Typical behavior of mountain lions when they have cubs. She was not hunting but trying to scare the man away.

When I was younger, my family lived in a rural town surrounded by forest, so we were taught a lot of things to defend ourselves from wild animals, like making yourself look bigger, speaking loudly, never turning your back, and throwing stuff around it. Because of this I spent most of my childhood in a coat with rocks in my pockets. The rocks were so I wouldn't have to worry about bending down to grand ammunition, and the coat was so I could look bigger. I'd grab the bottom corners and lift it up behind me like a peacock's tail or a cobra's hood. I never got to test it out but I feel like it would work. Not to mention the end would usually go over my head, so if they tried to attack me they'd probably get confused on where to attack

There's a few different theories as to why the Tsavo lions decided to start gnoshing on railroad workers. One is that an outbreak of Rinderpest, aka Cattle Plague, introduced by European colonial livestock severely limited their natural prey supply and humans were simply the next most readily available food source.
There is also a theory that one of the lions maybe had an infected tooth/teeth, making hunting difficult, so it went in search of easier prey from the rail camp's medical tent which just happened to be full of malaria patients.

Funny thing about the lions in that story. When I was working with the Ugandans while stationed in Iraq I asked them about this story. They confirmed that the lions were indeed a problem that needed to be dealt with, but mentioned something I hadn't heard about those events that might explain a little more about the estimated number of workers lost. The cannibal tribes in that area were known for being extremely talented with their bows and could both silently, and accurately drop an arrow down from the sky into someones dome piece in a way that makes snipers look obsolete.

Okay so the tapeworm thing is interesting: So basically, the theory why you lose some of your allergic reactions when you are infected with tapeworms, is that tapeworms and other bigger parasites (ergo everything bigger than bacteria) are actually taken care of by a very specific part of your immune system that, under current modern day circumstances, mostly has nothing to do. But because our immune system sucks at being dormant because it literally is defending us 24/7 and the parasitic risk is so low, it might be looking for other stuff that it can go buckwild on. And because it is not well adjusted since it's never used, it goes completely overboard when that part of your immune system actually has to act. That's called an Allergic reaction or an Allergic Shock
So there have been some studies, in Germany about purposefully infecting people with tapeworms to actually occupy that part of the immune system and so avoiding the consequences of such a bored immune system. It has shown some results, but since it's still needs peer reviewing and all that stuff, this is for now just a theory. Interesting nonetheless.

The shark thing reminds me of how you can hypnotize a rabbit by cradling them like a baby and tipping their head down a bit. They go into a catatonic state, basically hypnotized. I think this is because mother rabbits (like mother rodents) need to lick them down there to get them to pee and poo when they are young and this is the only way you can hold them still. One of my rabbits learned that if she throws her head around or leans to the side she won't go out.

from my understanding, those two males had an issue with their teeth or something genetic (as evident by the lack of manes) that made it hard for them to eat or at least hunt. Humans are weak in comparison and quite squishy so we make for an easier meal if caught off guard or weaponless. Not saying a human can't do harm to a lion though, those ones were just very desperate and there's little you can do against THAT.

I got a handful of disappointed people, one woman screaming at me and a month of sending requests to Facebook and Yelp to take down negative reviews from people who 1 starred my store because I didn't have the necessary equipment to deal with the "cougar problem".

Regarding the cougar video: Yeah, the cubs are exactly why this hiker got chased out. He started recording specifically because he saw this cougar's cubs, but he thought they were lost dogs at first. He started recording 'em, took a step or two forward, realized they were cougar cubs, then saw mama. The guy even admitted it in a news interview.
