Something that clicked with me was that instead of feeling like I need to go low, I just tried getting better at placing my mids. Your opponent doesn't need to be ducking for a mid to hit. You can catch them stepping, dashing in, or attacking. So if you can find ways to hit them in those situations it take the need to use your lows that much away.
I find that as I get further into the blue ranks with Reina, you run into more and more people who will just _never duck._ Reina's lows aren't that scary, so why would they? In reality though, Reina's hellsweep has huge range and gets her into HW with crazy plus frames. It's pretty strong. Hit them with enough annoying lows and they'll start ducking, and that's when you hit em with sentai 1 + 2 and blow them up.

Had our first session today (no money involved of course) and I got to say....teaching someone is so much harder than I thought it'd be. I matched up against him I was on a sub character and apparently he really liked the way I played so he asked me to help him improve cuz he said he was stuck in purple. I didn't know how to feel about it cuz I still think I suck and I'm only Kishin with my main and granted I worked really hard to achieve that rank by constantly reviewing replays where I lost and labbing the problem matchups the way you had taught us to do back in the day. So firstly, I wanna give a HUGE THANKS TO YOU AND SPEEDKICKS cuz when I bought this game I thought to myself, "I'd be happy if I manage to reach red ranks" but now I feel like I'm never satisfied by any rank and its cuz I know how to keep improving thanks to you guys. Secondly, how do I help a Kazuya player who doesn't like labbing, replays, frame data, etc. and just wants to do cool things? I actually never realized that not everyone would enjoy the same improvement steps (drills, learning counterplay, etc.) that I enjoyed and now I don't know if I can even help this bright eyed young Tekken enthusiast because if I have to force him to lab and fill in knowledge gaps (which I find super important and kinda fun tbh) but it sucks the fun out of the game for him then am I even helping him?
Most of the time it's finding out their learning style and taking it one step at a time, don't rush just because the improvement might be slow. Start with the most fun/cool thing they learned recently and connect it to something they're already doing naturally

I'd really love to see more of these types of videos for different characters. I've played Reina to Red Rank and still don't have that solid of a gameplan because I'm a scrub but having these types of "here's a simple gameplan your character can run" guides would help a ton for both learning my own character and learning what other characters want to look for in neutral.
I went back to playing the game after not having touched it for a while and tried to put your advice into practice. really changed the way I think about using reina's lows and I can use them with a lot more intent, really great advice thanks phi :)
Oh my goodness. Phi, thank you. *This* has been the most impactful video you’ve made for overcoming my current struggles. I’ve been dooming a bit the past couple months as my execution/punishment/throw break improvements were barely translating to rank progression. Took 3 months to go purple to blue. Took 711 wins to go Fujin to Raijin, with numerous visits to Flame Ruler even just a couple weeks ago. When I saw the way you bullied those blues despite the character unfamiliarity, it finally clicked. Then I played my first ranked games since hitting Raijin. 83 wins later I’m now Kishin on a 10x streak. I’d been playing way too passive, and I hated going low. In my eyes the reward was so little and I constantly got launched for it. But you know what happened when I insisted on frequent/aggressive mids? The lows hit more often and I needed to use them less. Thank you for shifting the way I see the character 💜

I needed this. I'm currently Flame Ruler with Reina and struggling + deterred to reach Fujin but after watching this, I think my biggest issue is, and this is gonna sound crazy..... ....I think I play too honest. I try my best to not spam (lows and throws) moves and sometimes will refuse to not use them at all. I prefer timing launchers, CHs (launchers), using my heat when necessary, getting the bulk of my damage off combos and wall tech if there is walls and generally mixing up but it ends up to my detriment alot of the time. I'm not good at playing "Small Tekken" and overestimate and overthink my opponent's play which leads me to "predict" their next move instead of playing the game off reaction. A perfect example is getting hit with a Heat Engager against a Kazuya and then eating a ff2 or ff3 because I duck, thinking "yeah he's gonna be cheap and hit me with Heavens Gate Hellsweep". In my mind I don't want my opponent to judge me for playing unfairly but does it matter if the chances are slim to none in the case of meeting them again? Idk. I struggle alot with that.
The thing with reina is that she can transition from one stance into pretty much any other. By the time your opponent catches up to your bs you're already into the next round. CD42 into heaven 14 or 2 and so on and so forth...
Thanks for this great tip. I've been playing T8 for a month now and I'm using Reina while waiting for Lei. I know 3 Reina combos that deal damage from 50% to 63% and a lot of damaging moves YET I always get annihilated AND I'm only in Warrior ranks. I love this game yet I suck at it.
Keep at it man, this game is brutal, you’ll get better. I’ve been playing since launch and just hit purple. Was stuck in red ranks since March. Put the time in and you’ll get better
i tend to do hellsweep whenever i have a chance. then when they start respecting it. i do the 3+4 4 4 with heat = 35% of their life. thats always my gameplan. im in blue ranks.
Ff2 into sen 1+2 or sen 2 to make them stop ducking lol. Also plz for the love of god learn ewgk. The amount of reina players complaining about lows/hellsweep being low blocked when they have a mid launcher out of wave dash is ill
This is how I feel playing Kuma at super low green ranks. People are just blocking my 1+1+1, but I fumble trying to overcomplicate and remember literally any other moves Kuma has to get through those blocks. I'm getting better at reading when they decide to move finally, but I'm under the impression that Kuma just isn't fast enough like Reina or don't really know when it's my turn to hit 1+1+1 again.
This video is super helpful as a Reina main. Less thinky more unga bunga big moves with good frame advantage until they stop working and then bring out Reina knowledge moves.
Hello Mr. DX :) Do you have any tips for switching to new characters? I'm a bushin Drag/Feng player (yeah yeah I know...) and I'm interested in picking up some more characters mostly for fun. My problem is that it takes me a really long time for a new character to click and it hurts my brain to try to do even the most basic things with them. I know eventually I'll figure it out but I was wondering if there's something I could be doing to adapt my mentality faster?
It works for lower ranks, but this is the play-style that gets her called “easy.” It’s when you really utilize her entire moveset that she gets harder. Bro might be trying to avoid the raiden habit a bit too early.
I respectfully disagree. This is fundamental, basic tekken. This was the play style of champs in previous tekkens. If you had to use the entire command list, your character was not top tier. I think the same still applies in tekken 8. “To be unpredictable, you must first be predictable” - Kobe Bryant.
Only like 5 characters ever in the history of tekken wants to use their entire movekit, and those characters are bad. A character being called "easy" doesn't matter when they're effective Plus he is in blue ranks. Even if this game is "easier" that is not low ranks
Hey Phi, I started watching your videos after getting hardstuck Tekken King. It's a little silly since a lot of your content is beginner material, but I've been playing off vibes the entire time. I guess the topic is, how do I/should I switch to a more methodical playstyle or hone my ape instincts until I achieve ultra instinct?
The only thing that sucks with Reina for me is people mashing, me creating space, and then i gotta figure out a way to get in range while worrying about them freaking out when i get even a little bit within range for anything they can do, and often times ill choose ff2 and whiff just in front of them. If i get in range and side step alot of times they'll throw put some lucky move that tracks me even though it looks like it shouldnt. Im thinking of just hanging back and waiting for them at this point or just not letting them play at all with plus frames. Edit: I promise you that Kazuya player was NOT playing on bad Internet, they dont just lie down and take hits like that unless they tryna rage quit, he probably saw it was you and thought if he rage quitted hed be embarrassed on stream.
You also have running 3 and 4. And dash blocking is a good option too for closing space and being safe. Also Reina can wave dash which covers a lot of ground
This was an issue that I was having when I got to the intermediate level. Simply dash blocking will do you wonders. If they throw out a slow move? It's now your turn. Sometimes they'll do a panic hopkick or whatever too. Or they will sit there sometimes. Definitely try this and DO NOT be afraid to keep doing it even if you get clipped and launched by something, thats just more information for you to play off of.
You can try wavedash canceling into ff2 to increase its range. It helps me close distances and control neutral better, especially after the range and tracking nerfs
It's weird but you can't stand-block Reina, and it's not because of the lows. You either press a button, you duck at some point, or you get pushed and chipped back to the wall into the HWS throw.
Tekken is such a subtle game. I have 200 hours of Reina, and I know I'm bad, but if I try this against red ranks I just get bodied. I've also noticed lately after watching more high level Reina players, that they're doing a lot of the same things that I try to do, just much much better. It's nice to get advice like this but it's really all the little unteachables that make the difference at the end of the day. Guess I need 800+ more hours before any of this starts to fall in place.
I wouldn't call these things "unteachable" as much as "simple in concept, difficult to execute" The "doing it better" involves solving other micro problems, but it's hard to generalize lessons about those

There's a lot that needs to be organized in the brain in an effective way and I'm not quite there yet. Despite my grumbling, I've learned a lot of valuable things from your videos and I'm grateful for that.
Paul has a similar issue, and if they’re not respecting my mid/high then I’ll hit him with a few giant blatant lows just to let them know “Hey, I still have these.” Then go about my mid/ high
I'm currently at TG with Reina and her lows *are* pretty bad. Hold back is pretty nuts against her, sen options have way more reward for the defender than you, etc. She's definitely not bad, but man her, yes, bad lows are making it feel like I'm working my ass off for everything I get with her. Meanwhile I switch to someone like Jin and I'm in paradise.
I'd honestly take a nerf to ff2 on block or whiff only, if it meant some buffs to any other neutral tools. I'm getting bored of ff2 being the answer in 80% of situations.
Lows being bad only matter if the mids aren't scary. Her mids are. Same with heihachi in T7. His lows are BAD on paper, but he has such strong mids that noone wants to duck. Giving reina super lows would be busted.
Ngl reina is difficult to play and since shes encountered so often many poeople know how to counter her. I dont wanna play reina too bc i feel like i know how to fight against her so dont wanna bother learning her if other people can easily beat me lol
I hope you can make some contents on Bryan sooner or later since he is still playing on Tekken7 and I would love to hear your thoughts about him especially he has weak 5050s and need to condition their opponents just like this video showcased albeit he is weaker in that regard
what do you do if you actually have no lows tho. T7 eliza comes to mind for example. Not everyone has reina hitboxes and new character knowledge check privileges.
I don't play Reina, but I think I'm able to see why my lows are so predictable and my mids and highs seem so ineffective as a Jack main, I just don't use the mids enough I suppose. I tend to spam his db+1 and db+2 a ton if I'm given the ability to, but then if I do that to someone who adapts quickly, I can't use his all of a sudden for the entire match basically (Not entirely true, but yeah, can't seem to condition them and they still block the mids and duck the highs, maybe I'm too obvious in my gameplay)
It blows my mind that you can pick up any character at Fujin level and steamroll any opponent at blue ranks without even knowing combo. I'm Raijin with Jun and struggling to climb any higher than that. I've been playing her since release. The difference in skill and experience...
good example why combos are overrated. tight offense and basics are way more important. I picked azucena recently, just for fun, and thought, ill be trash. but actually, I pretty quickly rose to just 1 rank below my max just through basics and a single, shitty, bread and butter combo.
Idk man I'm raijin Lee and started learning other characters, and you'll be surprised how well fundamentals carry you. Like I got feng to blue rank without knowing any optimal combos, i got lidia to battle ruler in like one day too (from garyu to battle ruler) just by whiff punishing, KBD and block punish. Idk her combos either lol, just her good neutral tools.
Exactly! I suspect a lot of opponents cancel on me for rematch because my game is sooooo basic. They lose to basic stuff. I don’t do anything flashy or fancy.
Reina is absolute menace because their flow charts seem unstoppable to me like I really stand there and watch like that Paul, her plus frames and constant forcing you into crouch lets me do nothing. The only thing that saves me is punishing her lows. Her range is especially annoying when you play characters without good keep out
Question, how do I beat someone who is throwing down jabs on or after most interactions? I try using my frame traps with Jin but it doesn’t always work

Just last night I’m sparring with a homie who’s learning Lidia while I’m fooling around with Reina (as a Lars main) and I say two things: “Man, she’s fun. Really aggressive Rushdown. But I’m not tryna make electrics a GamePlan and her lows don’t seem great” I go to bed come to work and here we are. You’re a magician.
Yeah I'm playing Lidia a lot and it does suck that her lows are bad on hit. You simply HAVE to use DB3 tbh, and d2 on ch giving fcdf2 is pretty good. Once you get them ducking then b1, df2, and ff2 become better to use. Especially in heat
@@Quince477 d2 is her best low. It tracks to her weak side (btw only 3 moves track to her weak side outside homing moves, df1, df3 and d2) and gives free heat engager on CH. it also high crushes too. Noone wants to duck lidia too so i just spam d2 and it works lol. It sucks its -4 on hit and -14 on block tho, so some characters can still launch her for it
I picked up tekken 8 a month ago and found your channel pretty much instantly. I've reached mighty ruler with law thanks to your help, any tips on law like this reina video. I feel I will be in the purple ranks for a while, besides match up knowledge I feel I really struggle when my opponents are very aggressive, is laws keep out tools poor or is it just me?
Im just a Shinryu-Reina with 200 hours playtime and I have a hard passive playstyle (in other Beatemups too). That ff2 is even in blueranks that effective is hard to swallow.
Most likely because in those ranks (blue+) people don't really mash -Plus in your ranks (and lower) you could get away with a crap ton of grabs and lows
@@voxrex3932 I just got the imnpression someday, that a lot of people know how do deal with ff2. For example that you can check her with 1 if she is in her Sentai after ff2. Most obvious way is sidestep, but most red ranks don't use sidesteps effectively. But I realize that the mixup is the key here, since she has 6 or 7 follow ups after ff2 and I just use 2-4 commonly.
If you want tips on how to use Reina, seek out skilled Reina mains like Mishima Complex. Phi is not a Reina main, though i was surprised how good he was with his limited knowledge. Made me feel bad honestly.
Phi might not be a Reina main but he knows Tekken fundamentals extremely well. A lot of people can't do input nearly as fast let alone throw all those electrics out of on the fly.

I always feel like Reina lack good lows, but it's mostly because I'm really bad at doing hellsweeps. Once I'll master it (in another reality maybe), I'll shut up. Really, you don't need multiple good moves, one is enough. The pression of its existence do the rest.

Don't focus too much on combos practice other stuff while in practice mode
when i played reina. most of my opponents are ducking.
Because most of the Reina players can't hit confirm ff2 sen3 and they just do it at the low/intermediate level.
Then just FF2 into one of the 3mid options :D

Hey Phi, I started watching your videos after getting hardstuck Tekken King. It's a little silly since a lot of your content is beginner material, but I've been playing off vibes the entire time. I guess the topic is, how do I/should I switch to a more methodical playstyle or hone my ape instincts until I achieve ultra instinct?

The only thing that sucks with Reina for me is people mashing, me creating space, and then i gotta figure out a way to get in range while worrying about them freaking out when i get even a little bit within range for anything they can do, and often times ill choose ff2 and whiff just in front of them. If i get in range and side step alot of times they'll throw put some lucky move that tracks me even though it looks like it shouldnt. Im thinking of just hanging back and waiting for them at this point or just not letting them play at all with plus frames.
Edit: I promise you that Kazuya player was NOT playing on bad Internet, they dont just lie down and take hits like that unless they tryna rage quit, he probably saw it was you and thought if he rage quitted hed be embarrassed on stream.
You also have running 3 and 4. And dash blocking is a good option too for closing space and being safe. Also Reina can wave dash which covers a lot of ground
This was an issue that I was having when I got to the intermediate level. Simply dash blocking will do you wonders. If they throw out a slow move? It's now your turn. Sometimes they'll do a panic hopkick or whatever too. Or they will sit there sometimes. Definitely try this and DO NOT be afraid to keep doing it even if you get clipped and launched by something, thats just more information for you to play off of.
Some people do that when they’re mad too. I have a friend who does that he doesn’t plug just lays down 😅
You can try wavedash canceling into ff2 to increase its range. It helps me close distances and control neutral better, especially after the range and tracking nerfs

It's weird but you can't stand-block Reina, and it's not because of the lows. You either press a button, you duck at some point, or you get pushed and chipped back to the wall into the HWS throw.
I've been maining Reina for 200 hrs and this just gave me an existential crisis man

Tekken is such a subtle game. I have 200 hours of Reina, and I know I'm bad, but if I try this against red ranks I just get bodied. I've also noticed lately after watching more high level Reina players, that they're doing a lot of the same things that I try to do, just much much better. It's nice to get advice like this but it's really all the little unteachables that make the difference at the end of the day. Guess I need 800+ more hours before any of this starts to fall in place.
I wouldn't call these things "unteachable" as much as "simple in concept, difficult to execute"
The "doing it better" involves solving other micro problems, but it's hard to generalize lessons about those
@@PhiDX Yeah the micro things are what I was more or less attempting to refer to when I said that. There's a lot that needs to be organized in the brain in an effective way and I'm not quite there yet.

Paul has a similar issue, and if they’re not respecting my mid/high then I’ll hit him with a few giant blatant lows just to let them know “Hey, I still have these.” Then go about my mid/ high
I'm currently at TG with Reina and her lows *are* pretty bad. Hold back is pretty nuts against her, sen options have way more reward for the defender than you, etc. She's definitely not bad, but man her, yes, bad lows are making it feel like I'm working my ass off for everything I get with her. Meanwhile I switch to someone like Jin and I'm in paradise.

I'd honestly take a nerf to ff2 on block or whiff only, if it meant some buffs to any other neutral tools. I'm getting bored of ff2 being the answer in 80% of situations.
Lows being bad only matter if the mids aren't scary. Her mids are. Same with heihachi in T7. His lows are BAD on paper, but he has such strong mids that noone wants to duck. Giving reina super lows would be busted.
I mean her unbreakable grabs are kinda the thing to make the opponent duck so lows aren't that needed for that purpose.
Where did all the Reinas go? Did their soar above my ranks that I almost never see them anymore? Perhaps I should play Reina.

Ngl reina is difficult to play and since shes encountered so often many poeople know how to counter her. I dont wanna play reina too bc i feel like i know how to fight against her so dont wanna bother learning her if other people can easily beat me lol

I hope you can make some contents on Bryan sooner or later since he is still playing on Tekken7 and I would love to hear your thoughts about him especially he has weak 5050s and need to condition their opponents just like this video showcased albeit he is weaker in that regard
what do you do if you actually have no lows tho.
T7 eliza comes to mind for example. Not everyone has reina hitboxes and new character knowledge check privileges.
It depends, but if a character has no lows it's usually because there's another part of their kit that's really strong
I don't play Reina, but I think I'm able to see why my lows are so predictable and my mids and highs seem so ineffective as a Jack main, I just don't use the mids enough I suppose. I tend to spam his db+1 and db+2 a ton if I'm given the ability to, but then if I do that to someone who adapts quickly, I can't use his all of a sudden for the entire match basically (Not entirely true, but yeah, can't seem to condition them and they still block the mids and duck the highs, maybe I'm too obvious in my gameplay)
It blows my mind that you can pick up any character at Fujin level and steamroll any opponent at blue ranks without even knowing combo. I'm Raijin with Jun and struggling to climb any higher than that. I've been playing her since release. The difference in skill and experience...
good example why combos are overrated. tight offense and basics are way more important. I picked azucena recently, just for fun, and thought, ill be trash. but actually, I pretty quickly rose to just 1 rank below my max just through basics and a single, shitty, bread and butter combo.

Probably region difference. In asia every blue rank i matched with is a sidestep god while i can't do a simple duck punishment for the life of me
i have a friend who main jun and went from flame ruler - bushin in like a week. Sabaki, can-can, and frame traps is literally so underrated
Idk man I'm raijin Lee and started learning other characters, and you'll be surprised how well fundamentals carry you. Like I got feng to blue rank without knowing any optimal combos, i got lidia to battle ruler in like one day too (from garyu to battle ruler) just by whiff punishing, KBD and block punish. Idk her combos either lol, just her good neutral tools.

Reina is absolute menace because their flow charts seem unstoppable to me like I really stand there and watch like that Paul, her plus frames and constant forcing you into crouch lets me do nothing. The only thing that saves me is punishing her lows. Her range is especially annoying when you play characters without good keep out

Question, how do I beat someone who is throwing down jabs on or after most interactions? I try using my frame traps with Jin but it doesn’t always work
You said after frame trap so sidestep? Or duck maybe?
@@rovidelarosa I usually get hit trying to sidestep a down jab, and crouching on my frame trap is def gonna get me launched or blocking again
If they repeat it again and again. Start hopkicking or orbitaling. Any move that low crushes. They'll eat one or two and stop mashing downjab.

Yeah I'm playing Lidia a lot and it does suck that her lows are bad on hit. You simply HAVE to use DB3 tbh, and d2 on ch giving fcdf2 is pretty good. Once you get them ducking then b1, df2, and ff2 become better to use. Especially in heat

@@Quince477 d2 is her best low. It tracks to her weak side (btw only 3 moves track to her weak side outside homing moves, df1, df3 and d2) and gives free heat engager on CH. it also high crushes too. Noone wants to duck lidia too so i just spam d2 and it works lol. It sucks its -4 on hit and -14 on block tho, so some characters can still launch her for it

I picked up tekken 8 a month ago and found your channel pretty much instantly. I've reached mighty ruler with law thanks to your help, any tips on law like this reina video. I feel I will be in the purple ranks for a while, besides match up knowledge I feel I really struggle when my opponents are very aggressive, is laws keep out tools poor or is it just me?
Law should be the aggressor, and 1,1,1 is his main "stop it" threat

Im just a Shinryu-Reina with 200 hours playtime and I have a hard passive playstyle (in other Beatemups too). That ff2 is even in blueranks that effective is hard to swallow.
Why? It's literally her core tool at all levels of the game
Most likely because in those ranks (blue+) people don't really mash
-Plus in your ranks (and lower) you could get away with a crap ton of grabs and lows

@@voxrex3932 I just got the imnpression someday, that a lot of people know how do deal with ff2. For example that you can check her with 1 if she is in her Sentai after ff2. Most obvious way is sidestep, but most red ranks don't use sidesteps effectively.
But I realize that the mixup is the key here, since she has 6 or 7 follow ups after ff2 and I just use 2-4 commonly.

If you want tips on how to use Reina, seek out skilled Reina mains like Mishima Complex. Phi is not a Reina main, though i was surprised how good he was with his limited knowledge. Made me feel bad honestly.
Phi might not be a Reina main but he knows Tekken fundamentals extremely well. A lot of people can't do input nearly as fast let alone throw all those electrics out of on the fly.

I always feel like Reina lack good lows, but it's mostly because I'm really bad at doing hellsweeps. Once I'll master it (in another reality maybe), I'll shut up. Really, you don't need multiple good moves, one is enough. The pression of its existence do the rest.
If you can't do the input just use the df3 shortcut. df3 df42 deals almost same damage as cd42
