🙈Perhaps I should have titled this video "A city blonde's unsuccessful struggle with the village real estate market" or "In Search of a Decent Village Bomb Shelter". My story is briefly as follows: After the Russian missile attacks and the ensuing blackouts, I decided to buy a house in the countryside in the summer of 2023. Since my budget was quite limited, I first bought a house in Cherkasy region for $2,000. I started to renovate it with my own hands and at first I was very happy. But there were no amenities in the house and it would have cost $4,000 just to bring water to the house, so I sold the house and found a new one with running water (and a toilet inside, not outside!). The house had exterior siding and looked nice, so I didn't hesitate to buy it and start repairing it with my own hands. But as it turned out, under the beautiful cover was an old monster. The house was wooden, built after World War II, and the roof and foundation were falling apart and needed to be replaced immediately. In the summer of 2023 I thought I had bought a wonderful house at a great price. But it was a trap. Local builders roughly calculated the roof and foundation replacement on my old house and came up with a verdict of $5,000 or more. Why didn't I notice the cracked foundation and leaking roof when I bought it? It didn't even occur to me. The most important thing was that the house looked nice and had water in it. The cost of repairing this (second!) house is unrealistic for me, so I decided to sell it and find another (THIRD!) house with a solid roof and foundation. But this turned out to be impossible, as all the inexpensive houses in the countryside have been bought up by internally displaced people from the regions occupied by the Russians. So I have nothing left but to start trying to gradually renovate my old rural bomb shelter. Anyway, the village mice, of which I am terrified and which I have been unsuccessfully fighting for almost a year, approve of my idea of renovating the house. 😉Buy nice or buy twice.🙄

It's always good to see an update from you. Good luck with the mice. Make sure your neighbors are doing their part. If they have mice, you will too. You are right about food containers. Metal is the only way to go. Hope your roof and foundation is not too bad and you can get them repaired soon. You and Ukraine are always in my prayers. Слава Україні!

    Vita's village villa adventure continues!
It would be so much better if you can make at least one room warmer.
The axe head you found can be cleaned up and a wooden handle bought from DIY store. Then you have small hatchet for splitting wood for fire. It need smaller pieces of wood to burn 1st before a larger long lasting fire is burning. Your sunny attitude is inspiring!
    Never Give Up!

The small axe head has some history with the house/village and it looks nice. It will have more meaning back in use. Basically scratch the rust off, maybe even use blue and yellow rust paint on it, put on a handle - easy - something DIY Vita will appreciate! @@MrKaypet

I can relate to your mouse problem, my daughters house had them. They can get through a hole the diameter of a pencil, so it's important to fill any cracks and holes where you think they are coming. Use steel wool because they cannot chew through it. Spray some ammonia around where you can't smell but they can, it tricks them into thinking there is cats. A hungry cat also helps. Your roof looks like a patch would cover the hole, and a bit of masonry cement can seal the cracks in the foundation and keep mice out. Don't worry Vita! It's okay! I like your village house and it's much better than many people have. You can fix anything, you are so smart and determined! Love from Canada, slava Ukraini!

    the title did shock!
If you managed to stay healthy though with these 11°, this after a long time of desperation was the first really uplifting news of the cradle of freedom.
The "Ukrainian" freedom loving Christmas tree looks well, that splendid landscape almost promises a rich summer and - oh boy - that tranquility injects new life and hope even remotely.
That's why you bought the house!
Roof and foundation can always get fixed.
Nature und landscape are there or not.
It hurts to imagine, how the roads would look had Ukrainians have circumstances to develop as they deserve.
Where else do people edit and publish videos as you, where else are there so many talents and innovations, where else is there so much decency and commitment?
Hope the world, in particular Europe, did recognize that and understands these roads as indication for the suppression and robbery that obviously occurred - by those people that drive around here with pimped up, blacked out massive cars and always polished rims???
    Seems you didn't give up.
And team "Never give up" won't give up.
If life is just, that spring gently looking through these trees will bring the blossoms of final freedom.

Vita, an easy fix for the cracks in your foundation is to get some spray Foam Insulation that will cover a large gap. I had mice in my garage when I 1st bought my house and then I found the cracks and holes that they can get into and used the spray insulation and I haven't had a mouse for 3 years now. Remeber the little bastards can fit through the tiniest hole so you will have to look for anything you see. Still set your traps so you can monitor the situation. But hopefully you will start to see results!
Be well and stay safe! Keep smiling and sharing your story from the "Capital of Freedom!"

The cracks I can see in the video look similar to the crack I had in the corner of my garage floor, but it's hard to tell from a video. Get yourself 3-4 cans. It's not very expensive, but have a plan where you are going to spray (maybe a can of blue or yellow paint to mark all the spots you suspect) once you start spraying it you can't wait long otherwise the stuff starts to harden and the little hose will get plugged up.
Get a small can of metal lubricant spray for your gate and other metal latches, doors and locks. Don't forget to get a bigger metal bucket to scoop out your ashes.
Your Chateau looks like a nice quiet place in the Universe. Would love to hear any positive results!

    Small open containers
    Directions:
Place the used kitty litter in several small, shallow containers without lids.
Put the containers near entry points to your home, including near exterior doors and windows, as well as in basements and attics.
If using this method indoors, keep in mind that cat urine does smell. Don’t place containers of used cat litter anywhere you don’t want odors to accumulate.

Hi Vita, You are the most fashionable country farmer in Europe! As for the mice, you must cut off their access, any holes in the walls, under kitchen cabinet, behind the fridge (where it s nice and warm if you leave your fridge on all the time)) and the roof. Then put on screens on all windows and doors, so if a window or door is left open they cannot get in (also keeps the screen keep the bugs out). I know in Europe it is not common to have screens (metal wire mesh not plastic ones) on your doors and windows, but believe me they keep the bugs out and possibly the mice too. A jack Russell dog is really the best for mice as they are bred to hunt for mice on the farms. As far as the mice are concern, your home is in the way of their home, since they have lived in the fields for millions of years. I am not sure if any electronic measures would work (unless they have a guarantee and you can return it if it does not work in 90 days... The Pest Control companies may be able to assist t come in and mice proof your home. If you bate them use peanut butter, I would hide some poison inside the peanut butter too, in case your trap is not activated when they eat it. How about buying the house next door, since your neighbor is no longer there. You may be able to provide your home to a displaced family with no rent, as long as they have the know how to fix it and keep it up for one year, add a condition that if the military action in Kyiv becomes unbearable you would have the ability to come in and live there for a few days with them and your family.

Always happy to see you and with every new video you post my desire to go and visit Ukraine grows.
Here are two pointers that hope will help:
    * to combat the mice problem, if it is available buy boric acid and mix it with sugar and flour, then place containers around the house. Make sure to remove every container before you bring your pets with you because it is deadly for them too.
    * Do not plant the trees so close to the house because eventually the roots will cuse you problems with pipes and house structure!
Love your sense of humor, take care and be safe. Slava Ukraini🇺🇦 🤗

It looks like you have someone helping you, so you're in good shape and we won't have to worry too much about you.
If you leave for long periods of time, see if the utility companies have a program for that or if turning off the power is possible, without having to pay any service fees or deposits.
You seem to have a nice place, even though it is old. If ever you need to replace the siding, that's when you need to replace rotted wood, scrape flaked paint, replace old wiring, (hire an electrician to do that) repaint everything, kill mold - whatever needs attention given to it.
You are obviously planning on staying there a long time, so don't feel like you have to do everything right away.
When it's freezing cold, set up plastic sheeting to cover windows, as this will reduce cold penetration.
If your wood burner can't heat the entire house, use plastic sheeting, bed sheets, blanket to close off rooms and reduce the area around the heat. Covering the floors with cardboard and then rugs may make them less cold.
If you have no running water during cold weather, you can always store water in the bathtub or in clean 5 gallon/liter buckets. To avoid 🪠 clogs, put tissue 🧻 in a trash bag and not down the toilet. Small, 4 gallon trash bags work well for this. If you cannot flush at all, then shut off the water valve, clean the toilet and flush it. Dry it out and install an 8 gallon up to a 13 gallon trash bag inside the toilet and use it multiple times before removing and replacing with a new bag. You can stop by a large garbage dumpster to get rid of these bags. I wouldn't burn them, as plastic burns black and will give your troublemakers something to complain about.

Greetings from Utah. Leave cat food outside. Cats will clean your yard and your surroundings when food isn't available to them once they get used to roam around in your yard in search for food. I tried that in my home for a few weeks. No more mice😂😂😂!
    Glory to Ukraine.
PS : unless I'm mistaken, that mice poison is dangerous to other animals, specially carnivores, since that poison is a blood thinner and mice don't usually die right away and get eaten by preying animals😮.

If the house has stood for 80 years even with poor foundations, has no water leaks, has running water to a kitchen, bathroom and inside toilet then it is worthwhile working on. I suggest with spring coming you discuss with neighbours what vegetables to plant and prepare your ground. If the ground is too hard for turning over with a spade, use a steel mattock, it takes a bit more effort. You have already got a good, stiff tined metal rake to create a fine tilth soil bed for planting. You have a large area that can be planted so there could be a surplus of produce for giving to neighbours, keeping for yourself or meals for soldiers or for pickling and preserving for the winter months. I understand you have summer rainfall there so you may not need irrigation. Hopefully if disease and pests are not a problem you should just have regular hand-weeding to do, and I think have a good hoe. Perth, Western Australia.

Nevermind you bought your village house without having a builders report done on the building as I know a lot of village houses are built poorly and usually without title deeds so basically you can not borrow money from a bank that's why they are cheap . The best way of doing is to knock the old house down , then obtain title deeds to the property through the village council and yes you need solicitors to do this once all that's done the 2000 dollars and 1000 dollars to tear down and sell the property privately or auction but I think you could get 7000 dollars on sale of land .

Brigitte L Jones. Vita your plants at the house are showing recovery and life, especially the Christmas tree. Take this as an omen of your village house being a success.Vita the problem with your extreme poisoning is that you may have made this place risky for your pets. CHECK WITH A VET how much clean up you need to do outside and inside before your place can have your pets brought back. Your house is not that bad an investment at all. You've got some foundations to fix, & any bit else that is rotted. While these costs double the price, it is still cheap. Your house ought to be have been visited and lived in more often to reduce the mice problem and extreme cold.Though you could not do this in winter because your roads were too dangerous to drive on. Overall Vita YOU NOW KNOW and understand what you have to do with your house. I believe you will eventually manage to make it a success and worth more money, at least double what you paid + renovations in the immediate future. In 25 years later it could be worth many times that.
