Love how consistent your posts are, I really appreciate seeing your videos each weekday!
I appreciate that!
I start my bulbs in the house, pot them up and get them started.
That’s a great plan … I like doing this as well!
I'm not even a gardener but these videos are literally soo fun to watch!
Glad you like them!
deep down your inner gardener is screaming out!! Maybe start a few seeds??
I have hostas from the bare roots that I bought at HD & Lowe’s. They are great performers and come back every year. I’m a container & elevated planter gardener.
Awesome! I’ve always wondered if they did well or not. Any tips?
Hi Amanda,
I love watching your videos even being in zone 6 you've given me plenty of ideas on garden pots, hardware, plants, bulbs, and seeds. I don't have your zone 8 weather but there are spots in my gardens that are hotter, sunnier, cooler, or shadier that allow me to grow many or try out many of the things you do. That's what I love about gardening! Hollyhocks...rust is a problem common to their leaves to most gardeners. My solution for this year since the leaves are below, I will continue to cut them off which leave me with beautiful flowers still, plant something with nice foliage or a contrasting bloom in front to fill in that openness! Please wish me success. I do grow them from seed so I have control over how and where I put them. You GROW, girl! 😍🏵💐
Great tip on the hollyhocks! Thank you so much!
I have the stargazer lilies in a container in my patio garden. I received them for Mother’s Day as a gift and I love them! They have returned for me in my zone 6 garden. Love your videos! Hello from NJ 💕
Wonderful! I think I might need to get some!
Hi Amanda I'm in zone 8a Texas I moved from Washington State, I enjoy watching you every day 😊thank You ❤️😇
Awesome! Thank you!
thank you for the video! I appreciate how you stick to the subject and offer your learned experiences! Ive grown Stargazer ....zone 9,partial shade. BLEW me away!! Loaded with blooms 1st year.Ive already bought 30 bulbs to add this year!
Thanks for sharing! Sounds like I need to get some stargazers!
Looking forward to watching you plant all those gladiolas. I love them and they look so beautiful in flower arrangements. My brother sent me several gladiola bulbs from his NY garden three years ago and I planted them in my garden. They have done really well here in our garden in Cypress, TX, and have come back each year, so far. He digs his bulbs up each fall and replants them in the spring. I keep mine in the ground year round. Those Lillies are going to be stunning!
So much work to dig them up each year!
My mouth is watering, cannot wait till we get ours here in Va
Yay!! Any day now!
I enjoy watching all your videos, I even went back to when you started your channel.
Well, then you can see my growth over the years … I had some other TH-camrs tell me to take me old videos down but I think it’s good to show the beginnings even if they are rough.
Oh my goodness you are so cute and so much fun! I just went to HoneDepot garden center as well so its interesting to see the inventory comparison! Really enjoyed this!!! Yay for your new shade garden! ❤️🥰👍Liz - Small Garden in California
That is one of my favorite parts about shopping at big box stores and then watching TH-cam …. I love seeing the different products and varieties between zones.
So fun with bulbs! Thanks for sharing!!
Thanks for watching!
Here in florida we have to plant our dahlias in september for the plant to do well. They bloom in november/december, take a break in the winter, and bloom again in the spring. Then we cut them back during summer. It might be something to try in the future depending on what your winters are like. 👍
That is amazing … I had no idea you all had to shift them through the seasons like that … fascinating!
I've had great success with Carolyn Wharton and White Christmas caladiums in Houston, Amanda! Shopping with you is so much fun!! Linda. 💚💚
Awesome!!! I can’t wait to try them! Thanks Linda!
Another good informative video. Im anxious for spring! Your new intro and photos are great!😊
Glad you like them!
Can't wait for your gladiolus planting video. Happy gardening!👩🌾
Same!!!
Love all the new bulbs. They are going to look awesome in your garden. Thanks for the bulb tour.
Glad you like them!
I am in Canada. I can't believe the selection you have. I think my Home Depot may have 2 displays. I want all the lilies!!!
It’s more than usual in my opinion!
Thanks for that good information.
You bet!
My dahlias failed in central Texas, but succeeded beyond my hopes in South Carolina - probably because it rains in South Carolina during the summer. Weather makes a difference.
South Carolina is a dream climate for gardening!!!!
Looking forward to planting season with your help.
Can't wait!
We have so much in common...I'm in zone 8b in the MS Delta area. I just love your videos. You're so pleasant. I have also discovered I have better luck with seeding dahlias vs tubers.
Thank you so much!! I hope I have better luck with the seeds!
Love the haul. I would have bought them all. No control 😂
Right?!
I’ve had great success with Carolyn Wharton (bought from Costco), postman joiner (bought first time last year from Calloways), and i think White Christmas (the white and green) here in Mesquite.
Thanks for sharing! I’d love to try them in my shade garden.
I'll be looking forward to your video on planting the glads in grow bags. Be sure to let us know the size of grow bag😊
Definitely! My video with tulips planted in grow bags comes out tomorrow if you are interested.
@@shesamadgardener I'll be there!
I grow white Christmas caladiums every year, I live in Mesquite they do absolutely wonderful for me.
Awesome!!! Thank you
Great info
Glad it was helpful!
You have influenced me to start some clematis in pots early . We will see what they do . Good luck!
Awesome! Enjoy!
Wow so many choices. My peonies have been in the ground for many years and are basically carefree and prolific but I am 7b east coast. I've had good luck with star gazer lilies in the past. Deer eat the asiatic lilies. I have a lot of shade so caladiums do well. I can grow dahlias in containers in a sunny area on my driveway but they don't do well in my beds. I lost a massive oak tree, last year, so I do have more sun, now, and am going to try more dahlias in grow bags. We usually get a lot of rain so I think that makes a difference.
So jealous of your peonies, Susan! I bet they are beautiful!
I have grown hosta from bare root, purchased from Walmart. Only one survived, I didn't have the best luck! All of those look so tempting! The only thing I've had success with planting bare root so far is day lillies!
Day lilies are strong plants 💪
You are smart😊
❤️
Proud of you too for refraining! Haha
Thank you! My budget is proud of me too!
I'm in NE PA and planted the Caladium Mix last year and it was really pretty. I think this year I'm going to buy a white variety and a more purple pack. I had good success with the four variaties of Dahlia's but will look for the shorter ones at either Wal-Mart or the box stores. A friend told me that Aldi's also sell some Spring bulbs so I'll have to check out what they sell.
ALDIs has tons of bulbs! I’ve had a lot of luck with their alliums.
Great, thanks!
Good info Amanda, I'm headed to Home Depot today! I planted dahlias for the first time last yr with mostly positive results, the failures were my fault for not getting them in the ground soon enough. Great self control, it's so tempting to go crazy!!
That’s awesome that dahlias worked for you! What varieties did you grow?
I totally just ran to Home Depot zone 7 MA. They are the only big box store that has their summer bare root plants in and I was able to grab all but the Pink Romance Lily. Excited to grow along with you!
Yay!!!
Thanks for showing us! I was looking for caladiums!
You are so welcome!
Ok here’s the deal with Hosta + Astilbe: both do well here in 6b NE because we have acidic/woodland type soil and shaded wet areas. Hosta (which I hate) grow very well. I have one the size of a Cadillac. They are hungry plants and all of mine have slug holes in them by the time temps get up to 80. Too much trouble. I’m digging more up and giving them to my landscaper to give to his client up the road. Astilbe is near the Hosta. Same environment. If you want some in your shade garden, I recommend potting one up first and then seeing if the spot has too much sun for it. That way you can move it outta there and put it on your front entranceway. I’ve got Astilbe and Ladies Mantel in the same area, too. Wherever your Ladies Mantel is doing well, stick the Astilbe pot there.
This is great advice, thanks! I also am not a fan of hostas.
Last year I bought Salmon Star Lily bulbs in those little packages like that at Home Depot and when they came up and bloomed (yes they bloomed that same year I planted them!) they were bright white w a lime green throat. Nothing at all what I bought! They honestly are not any cheaper than ordering from a mail order through a reputable company and then you know you get what you are buying if that matters to you.
Oh wow! That can be so disappointing to end up with the wrong variety!
It's hard not to get carried away by all the color of the packages when you're in the store. I just get all excited when I see the pretty flower pictures. I have good luck growing glads. I stay away from lilies and caladiums. They are deer delicacies, plus bunnies LOVE lilies. You are fortunate that you don't have those pesky critters. Are you planting all the flowers in your raised beds.
I’m planting some in raised beds, some in pots, and some directly in the garden beds.
Buy the elephant ears!! The larger the elephant ear, the larger the plant!! I live in zone 8A Texas.
Leave it in the ground. It comes back every year
I need to try them!!!
On bare root plants, I try and pot them up before putting them in the ground. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Mostly I stay away from them.
I'm a lily girl at this point. I have them in 5 different locations. I bought a bag of 15 from HD 2 or 3 years ago, and they have done so well!! I've also purchased from Breck's. A new company I found last year is Easy to Grow Bulbs. I was looking for Iris Ensatas, and they were one of the only companies I found to have them. (Breck's has them this year but I'm not sure about getting them from there. I'll wait and see if last year's purchases do well.) I also bought my amaryllis from ETGB and they were huge averaging about $16. I'm anxious for your how to plant amaryllis outside because the year I tried keeping them as houseplants and then trying to overwinter to grow again was a bust. Yulia at Y Garden said the ones she planted outside did way better than the ones she kept inside.
With 6 inches of snow on the ground, these videos are firing me up for spring.
Awesome! Yes potting up bare roots first is a must in my opinion. I will be sure to post about the amaryllis!
I planted my dahlias in pots last year since i didn't want to dig them up at the end of the year, live in montreal canada and zone 4 so they would die outside in winter. Had great results in the pots, only one out of a dozen didn't flower but grew well. Brought them in the basement in the pots to over winter. Will see if they grow back this summer.
That’s awesome! I’m hoping to have luck with the ones I grew from seed … if they don’t work out at least I didn’t spend the money on the tubers.
@@shesamadgardener good luck with your dahlia seeds, I'm going to try some too that I collected from my plants last summer.
I was so proud of you for not buying the store. It takes a lot of self control to walk away. I just developed a bad addiction with plants. I started laughing when you said you forgot your bulbs in the refrigerator. In my case not only did I left some in the refrigerator but left it outside all summer and it was dust. I'm glad someone is all like me. Lol 😅😅😅
😂 gardening minds alike!!!
Oh I really should stay away from these but I won’t. 😁 I recently found some bulbs and bare root plants I bought last year and tucked them away. Needless to say, most of them are ruined. I may be able to save some of the bulbs but that’s probably all. I just have to be more diligent about getting things planted and not forget about them. 😬 Great video!
Same here! I forget that I have them all of the time!
I want to check out those caladiums… hope they still have some in my area
I’ve still seen them around!
It sure is nice to see the spring bulbs are rolling out. I am in Canada so mine prob won’t be here for a couple more weeks. I can hardly wait. Love your choices and video.
Question for you … I grew lupine this year and planted it during the fall … we had some massive freezing temps and some of the lupine leaves died … I know they grow crazy in Canada … do you think the roots below the surface survived?
Mine have always survived 🇨🇦
Wow, i can’t believe how many options they have!! I just never think to go to HD.
I was shocked … I’ve never seen this many from Home Depot before!
Lol. Bought the same bags of gladiolus 2weeks ago. Looking forward to comparing how we do.
Awesome!
I forgot to say i love my upright elephant ears! Grow great in San Antonio.❤
Yay! I’ve never grow them … I’m wondering how well they would fit in with my garden style but I think they are so beautiful.
I did Netty's Pride last year absolutely beautiful! I also had the black lillie, forgot to plant until later, so hopefully this year will come back 🤞proud of you on the dahlias lol, I had the purple and white one last year first time with dahlias did alright but pretty. I think I need to try some gladiolas this year 😊
Glads are so fun to grow!
Thanks for the video. I had to speed walk past the display!! I will spend A LOT of money if i stop. I have had luck with 1 dahlia. Gladiolus does very well for me.
Glads do well for me too!
Thanks for taking us shopping with you! I may copy your idea of putting the bulbs in my raised bed 👍😊 when do you plant these bulbs?
I’m going to plant my lilies at the end of February or beginning of March.
I have done the Paul’s Glory Hosta in the past and they are really pretty. A caveat though, is that one of my packages was mislabeled and I was very disappointed when I got plain green hostas instead of the beautiful variegated leaves. I also love the caladium bulbs from Walmart and the Home Depot.
I’ve heard that the Dahlias are not really good for our Texas gardens, but if we plant the smaller dahlias they are much more vigorous in the heat.
Yes mislabeling is definitely an issue. I’m trying dahlias from seed this year as I heard they do better in our area … I guess I’ll find out!
I’m getting better with my dahlias here in NH. But I have to dig them up due to single digit winters and snow
I really think they do better in cooler climates like yours!
Holey Moley that elephant ear bulb is HuGE!!! Hahaha 🤣 Liz - Small Garden in California
I want one so bad!
I have had good success with Stargazer lilies in my zone 4/5 garden. They have a strong lily scent which I like but some people might not. I think peonies probably grow better in a cooler, damper climate than Texas. They are pretty easy to grow in Ontario with little care. I have moved a couple of plants and they still bloomed the next year. Dahlias also don't like to dry out and do particularly well in Ontario at the end of the summer when it is cooler and rainier. Not winter hardy in zone 4 though.
When I was in Canada, I was obsessed with how big all of the peonies grew!
I think I may have bought a few of these lilys last year.. I wonder if I will see any of them pop up this year since I don’t remember where I put them but I remember planting them
I forget where I plant things ALL OF THE TIME! But then it’s a surprise the next season ❤️
I have had good luck with root hosta and fern. I bought 4 of each and 2 hosta survived and 3 fern survived. Ive only been a gardener for 6 months at that point.
Did you plant directly in the ground or in containers first?
@@shesamadgardener i planted in pots then later in the ground. I more than likely overwatered and rotted the roots. Or atleast thats what i tell myself.
Lucky duck 🦆. Went to Lowe’s and HD today and they had nothing. I’m 8b, but PNW so I’m assuming we’re still a few weeks out 😢
They’ll be there before you know it!
Fun video! You should check out Sam’s too 😊 … I think more bang for your buck compared to Home Depot. Got oriental lily’s … 14 bulbs for 15 bucks! Dahlias break my heart 😂
I have a Costco membership so I checked them out a few days ago but they didn’t have any bulbs out yet.
I have tried cannas and killed them too easily. I did elephant ears this year and had great success: they liked partial shade (direct sun seemed to scorch them), and being fed and watered a lot.
Cannas love our hot Ohio summers and lots of water - I dig them up and store them in our dark cold storage over the winter (and also my elephant ears).
Dahlias…I have a love/hate relationship with them…when getting them started in spring, they do NOT like to be overwatered and will rot so easily. They do best in well-draining soil and like mulch as well. Mine went crazy in the right soil but I did not have a trellis set up, so they went all over the place like kudzu. The flowers were amazing tho. In Ohio we usually cant get away with leaving them in the ground, and I still dont have the storage conditions quite right, so I lose about half over the winter. The hate is related to how high maintenance they are. The love is their beauty when you can get them to bloom.
I meant that I killed callas too easily. Cannas are pretty hard to kill.
Dahlias are definitely high maintenance and expensive … I’m trying them from seed this year with the hopes that if they fail, at least I didn’t spend that much 😬
Just because you failed with a bare root or tuber doesn't mean it wont do well in your area. I have had trouble with the hostas and ferns when i buy them in the bags like that. I even pot them up first to get their roots established for a few months before planting in the ground. Some still died. When I buy the plants in 6 inch pots they do fine. Most of my hostas and ferns are over 15 years old and 10x the size they were when i purchased them.
Good point!
If you stagger planting of glades the bloom time would be longer.
This is true, however, if you can leave them in the ground the following year they all bloom together. Or so my sister-in-law told me.🙂
Yes! It works great! Mine are perennial so most likely I will leave them all in for next year.
I love my canna, they are my back drop for my large elephant ear plants. Planted my first dalhias last year n love them. I want to try the Lillie, bit do they come back each year? I'm in zone 8b Florida. Any suggestions to keep the deers away from my calcium. They grow beautiful for me, but the deers??
I don’t deal with deer so I have no suggestions. For the cannas, I planted mine in pots and I think that was the wrong move … I should have used them as a backdrop like you did.
How to you stake your gladiolas? Mine always fall over.♥️🦋
I like to use peony rings! They work great!
What location are you in? I'm in 7b, northeast coast. I've been checking the stores every few days now. Only seeds so far. I've been buying fruit trees and bushes from local sellers since fall. You can never have enough plants.
I’m in North Texas Zone 8
I went to Home Depot last week all they had was seed no cut flowers
Ugh, hope the bulbs get to yours soon!
Northern transplant here 40+ yrs. Finally gave up on peonies. An honest garden center said that they won't grow here.. zone 8. Same with lilacs. Not enough chill hours. So why do they keep selling here. Sucker. And they know it.😂
For real … I can’t understand why they keep selling them except that people keep buying them … I’ve bought several before I finally figured out that I can’t grow them in my garden.
Use copper spray for rust
I did … it is just an intense mold each time, so I opted not to grow hollyhock anymore.
Candidum lights my shade garden up!!! Carolyn Wharton is pretty and seems tough. I've been told that caladiums lose size every year until no bloom is thrown. Anyone know if this is true? Florida 9A.
I’ve never heard of that but now I’m going to go look it up!
I am also increasing my lillies and callas. Jealous that your callss will probably survive in ground. I had to dig mine and store fornthe winter and lost quite a few so will have to get better at that
What zone are you in? I didn’t realize they weren’t very cold hardy.
I am 6b
I know they overwinter in Seattle which does gets some weeks of snow but just not as cold. I'm on the other side of the mountains. Mine were super productive and probably increased in size of corm by 5x (those that made it) so just a few would probably do ya. I had Odessa black and a pink variety
I bought 6 bags during the weekend, all of them were useless. All the bulbs were broken. Not worth the try
That’s terrible! Hope you were able to return them!
Stop! You’re in a fur jacket???
Funny you mention that! 🥰🥰🥰
😂😂😂 it’s not real … but it is so soft and I love it!
I love astilbe, too, but I read somewhere that they do not like our heat, even if planted in the shade.
