The eruption of Mount Etna on the Italian island of Sicily has been ongoing for several days. Scientists have recorded that for the first time in 4 years, one of the largest craters of Mount Etna, Voragin, has become active. The ash cloud, according to eyewitnesses, rose to a height of 4.5 km (2.5 miles) above sea level. Due to the eruption of Etna and another volcano, Stromboli, which spewed hot ash and lava, Catania airport was temporarily closed.
Large amounts of volcanic ash fell on the settlements closest to Etna. Local residents and news media are sharing video footage of city streets strewn with ash. Black thick ash covered the roofs of houses, cars and tables of street cafes. According to the latest data, residents of surrounding settlements have already begun to return to normal life after the peak of the eruption, removing ashes from the streets. However, scientists do not rule out increased eruptions of both Etna and Stromboli in the near future.
Italian authorities say both volcanoes are “under surveillance” and in the event of an emergency everything will be ready to evacuate local residents and tourists.
