    You're very lucky to have help that willing to get out there and lay in the snowbanks with you. When you work alone it takes a lot of mental discipline to get out there in the cold and get the job done.

    Might take a break if you need to but I do love seeing the winter updates. I think the winter work and building the new farm is more interesting than summer farming.

    Hi Mike, I am an old truck driver. When you come in off the road like going up north do not just park the truck. I know you're tired and want to go home to get out of the cold but you have to drive it around and use the brakes for a time and they will dry out and the next day they will unlock better and if you do that for at least 15 or 20 minutes you will have no trouble at all. I would drive around the truck stop like they would laugh at me but the next day when they were under the truck and trailer trying to get going, I was gone.

    • @junkorbust9498
      @junkorbust9498 3 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Yes, I make some heavy brake applications before I park up in that situation. It gets some heat in them so they dry. I try not to use the brakes too much generally but in that instance I do.

    I have never been in weather like that. What we did on our brakes was to put the truck in gear and leave the brakes released. The drums and shoes freeze before the air leaks off and locks the brakes together. It generally worked but it wasn’t as cold as you got it there.

    Take care. Many 'Pro' TH-camrs take a month of now and then to recharge the creative batteries. You are a farmer with a family, two farms to run, a new house under way and a TH-cam-channel. So go and do yours to recharge your batteries in peace.

    Mike. Look into ground heaters. It’s essentially a garden hose that has heated glycol pumped through it. You lay it on the ground and cover it over with concrete blankets. After you pour your concrete and it sets you use the same heaters to keep the concrete warm enough to side correctly. They work great. Poured 1000s of yards of concrete well below freezing with that setup.

    Pretty sure you can buy heating cables that you put into your concrete to heat it from the inside. Try looking for Concrete curing cable or something like that. It really just needs to help it to start curing so it creates its own heat then you can use something to insulate the slab while it hardens.

    Mike, I understand you needing a break. I figured you guys would take most of the winter off when I first started watching your show. Boy, was I wrong! Your perseverance in absolutely bonkers conditions is very admirable. When I am feeling sorry for myself about how cold it is here, I'll always have re-runs to goad me into walking outside 👍 This from a very pampered 38th parallel, mid-westerner's perspective.
    You should take your break, before lack of rest breaks you!

    I'll pass along something I did when I lived up north years ago and that I mentioned to Tony Fast a year or two ago. Find an army surplus store and buy one or two parachutes to create a shelter around engines or axles that are frozen. Stick a tiger torch under there and things will be warm in 10-15 minutes. Just make sure there's space so the torch doesn't light up the tarp!

  • @susanbarss477
    @susanbarss477 3 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    Hello Mike, instead of using a bar or hammer, use a tiger propane torch. Way faster and way easier. Also put a valve on your supply line behind glad hand Shut it off when you park and brakes will not dynamite. Just make sure you turn valve back on when you want to go. Have it on my trailers, works awesome.

    Mike hereas a old truckers trick we used when ya had days like that , A few miles before ya got to the lot lightly drag your bakes getting the drums hot this will dry the water out of them , then do not set the brakes leave the truck in gear if and when the aior bleeds down and the brakes set they will set on dry drums and not set up . I use to run coal bucket and starting in late Aug. the road salt started to move and we worked our donkeys off hauling road salt and the rainy season and COLD nights start in Nov. for us . Also one more thing that also helps that ya don't seee today ion big trucks are brake backing plates they aslo kept dirt and water out of the brakes . When i boght my new East Dump i made sure they put backing plates on the new bucket. DOT hates them BUT he is not the one layen under it on days like you have.

    If you pull your hand valve , break down just a little bit for the last few hundred feet it will dry all the trailer drums and they won't freeze as bad .
    Leave the truck in gear when you shut off the engine and don't set the breaks.
    Good luck , Be Safe !!!
