You want to do any advanced stuff, you select glass then multi layer and adjust setting on each, you can blow things up just as good as anything in the movies if you comp in fire effects and glows and a tad of motion blur.

When I apply the shatter effect it doesn't do anything. All I have is a big gap in my footage and left overs at the side of it.

Under your effect...force 1...Radius...try increasing Radius...its fixed my problem. The other way that works is make the image layered making the BG behind the image bigger.

While my animation is breaking down the wall, the label comes out of the void.
The label is the top layer.
I need the wall back on the back of the label.
I mean, the bricks that fell apart would gather back together.
In other words, for the reverse to happen in the layer with the wall.

I've been messing around with the settings in lighting for quite a bit, but all you can do in there is adjust the: Light Type, Light Intensity, Light Colour. Light Position, Light Depth, Ambient Light, and Diffuse Light

***** I have just re-read your comment and you want to make your shatter "Flat"? So without the 3d effect I'm now guessing? I'm sure this can be done under the "Shape" tab on the shatter effect, then after you have opened up shape you want to decrease the "Extrusion depth" to '0' and that SHOULD make it flat.
