There’s always the interesting part under The Royal Mile. We did The Mary King’s Close tour. I loved every second of it. And all the hauntings going on down there. 😊😊😊😊
What fun! Fascinating picture comparisons, loved the adventure of it all. Amazing how little truly changed even after all these years. Also interesting to see people on the street again, yay (Princes St). Everyone stay vigilant and Scotland will come back from this virus better for it. Love Scotland 🏴❤️
This is a super-cool one Broonfords!! I used to have a book when I was younger titled, "Then & Now", which had photographs of old buildings, castles, or ruins with an overlay showing it in original condition. Wow, that was a long sentence! I absolutely love seeing how places looked at differing times. Thanks Tony, and more thanks to Kirsten for the great idea for a vlog!
really enjoyed looking with you the old and the new photos., I can relate to this as I was born in Edinburgh, Leith.......Thank You for your photos , nice to see home so far away here in Los Angeles ......I remember when WW2 ended we where up town that day I was about 8 years old, people where dancing in the street.., people singing, Princes Street was filled with people everyone was so happy.....Thank you for doing a great job with your reporting....
Nice! Hats of to the Mrs. Great to see how green it is right now and slowly coming back to life. Still disconcerting seeing all the shops closed and the Royal Mile empty AND the stadium seating for the Tattoo! Cheers.
Great video Tony , Lost Edinburgh is a fantastic resource for images of the city , then and now. Of all the beautiful buildings demolished in the 1950's and 60's the most tragic , as shown in your last example , is the stunning former 'Life Association of Scotland' , ( currently used by the New Club , founded in 1787 ) the design is similar to structures in Venice. There are so many examples of majestic buildings on Princes street alone including the hotel on the corner of Castle street that more recently burned down and the North British and Mercantile insurance site that became a BHS store and will eventually become yet another hotel and restaurant !.
Here is a great article to show the changes on Princes street over the years : www.edinburghlive.co.uk/news/edinburgh-news/brutal-surgery-how-crackpot-plan-16198428
Another great video. Many of the scenes in the old photos were still the same in the 50s when I was growing up. The hotel at the east end is now the Balmoral. But just a few years ago was The North British hotel, but known to everyone as the NB. The Caley hotel at the west end. Both former railway hotels. 🙋♂️
What a fantastic concept for your weekly installment of Clan Broonford videos! Well done, Tony. I appreciate your creativity and dedicated efforts to carry on, despite the challenges we're all experiencing during the pandemic. Thank you for sharing your enthusiasm for all things Edinburgh. Keep safe.
Slyder Martin Thanks Slyder! I didn’t know you left this comment. Dumb TH-cam! 🙄 We will def be watching this. I had mentioned to Tony maybe talking about some of the city under the Royal Mile and all the hauntings. 😁 We did Mary King’s Close when we were there. I was so hooked! I wanted to be under there longer. lol I love being around ghosts. Been that way my whole life. 😊
Thank you Slyder! We just finished watching it and loved every minute of it. That same exact photo technology is what my husband has been working on with some Las Vegas videos. We also joined the FB page. Thank you again! 💜
Your wife is Brilliant! My husband and I are history buffs too. Absolutely love this video. I agree with Ry4n, another inspiring series is born! Many thanks to.you and Kirsten!
What a super fascinating trip to the past! We'll be looking forward to some more videos like this one! Thanks a lot and a warm greeting from Argentina!
This was SO cool! I have a print of a photograph taken in 1868 of The Grassmarket with same view as yours from 1865! My Mom found it in a thrift shop here in Canada and I have it framed on my wall now :) I got way too excited when you showed that view!!
I never tire of viewing the genuine love and enjoyment that you share with us during your discoveries in your hometown. It’s good to see you go on a wander again too. Stay safe to you and the entire Broonford clan. Slainte!
This was so interesting to see old Edinburgh. There is a great page on Facebook called Lost Edinburgh that shows what Edinburgh was like decades ago. Please do a part 2. Fantastic video!
This is great! And I agree, this would be a fantastic series! Love seeing "then & now" photos. Had to laugh when I saw the Jack Daniels advert painted on the side of the pub. Of course, we have plenty of Scotch whiskey & other foreign alcohol sold in the U.S. so it's not, surprising our finest is sold & advertised overseas.
The funny part is that a couple of days ago I was looking online for old pictures of Edinburgh. And now here you are showing off some. I love it. This is great.
I enjoy Sanborn Maps of old cities in the USA. As a child I used to live in a Victorian house built in 1895 and the map showed all the homes and businesses including stables on the street at the time the house was built. The entire block has now been torn down for an office building with a huge parking lot. Looking at the old map gives me perfect recall of my old street. Today”s wander reminds me of that. Enjoyable.
Love this video, but then I have always loved how you have shared the great history of your city. Definitely do more of these kind of videos. The Mrs. is one smart cookie. So glad you are able to be out and about again. So weird to see people without masks. We still look like train robbers of the old west here in the USA. Coming your way in May of 2021 so crossing our fingers that all will be closer to normal by then. Love Edinburgh even more now. Keep up the good work Tony.
That was fascinating...more please. FYI the new Netflix film "Eurovision Song Contest...The story of Fire Sage" has some fantastic scenes of Edinburgh in it. I watched it last night and didn't realise Edinburgh was featured in it so that was a great bonus....it's a very funny movie as well. Have a good weekend x
Great video Tony! I grew up in Edinburgh, now live in Canada and love watching your videos. The Black Bull comparison looks odd to me, count the windows and look at the roofline, I dont think it is the same building.
1 of your best vids so far mate brill idea mrs broonford. Id love to see more vids like this its fascinating seeing the old buildings and street scenes that have long gone. I might try get a few photos of my town and find the same spot where they were took and compare the old and new.
Love it! A great idea. I think for the first one you were too low on the hill, and lens differences exaggerate the perspective, too. But fascinating changes.
Did enjoy it, thanks! I am a native of (and resident of) San Francisco -- and also a historian. I first visited Edinburgh in summer of 1983 (I'm 63 now) -- and immediately began a love affair with your city that has had me back there (and all of Scotland, from the Butt of Lewis to Whithorn) for nearly 40 years now. Over that time, I've seen Edinburgh go through a huge transformation. In 1983, it was grey, dour and it just seemed beaten down and depressed -- post-colonial malaise? Over the years, I have seen it become vibrant, modern, trendy, and "hip." That has good aspects and not-so-good ones...but it is wonderful to see the city bustling and lively and feeling so good about itself. We will be back JUST as soon as covid allows. BTW: Our two cities are more alike than you might think: great walking cities, steep hills, "neighborhoods," lots of bars everywhere, water on 3 sides...and, of course, S.F. has our famous cold fog coming in off the Pacific during the summer so -- we're also "cool"!
Amazing pics and comparison of old and new, thank you for sharing :) one little point...and I’m not trying to be a dick 🤣 but under the bridge pic at Cowgate, I think it was actually taken from the other side of the bridge looking towards where you were standing. I could be wrong but I am pretty sure some of those buildings on the south side were built before 1860 and it was the side of road sloping up towards the royal mile that was renovated a lot in later Victorian era.
Just come across this channel. Have been to Edinburgh many times and really enjoy my time there. Have watched a number of your videos and have found each and every one extremely interesting and informative. Lots of things I hadn’t noticed but once the lockdowns end I will certainly look forward to visiting all of those interesting places. Have you done a video on Mary Kings Close? So far I have not come across it. Great videos keep doing it because Edinburgh is such an interesting city
Interesting video great to add that historical side yes some buildings in later years don't have charm of the old but Edinburgh has survived architecturally better than our cities in Yorkshire. Thanks.
Very interesting again, Mr Broonford. I think you would find this book interesting: "EDINBURGH An Illustrated Architectural Guide" by Charles McKean. As I am interested in architecture I found it very interesting for finding out about the dates of buildings in our beautiful capital city.
The oldest part of the castle is almost 1000 years old. So no not really, The castle has been there since at least 1200ad, and in mostly its current form since 1500s ish. no cameras for a few hundred years.
Would you manage to do something on Peter Stevenson’s of potter roe? They were a scientific instrument makers. I think the number of the building was 14 but I’m not sure. My dad did an apprenticeship there probably in about 1948? I don’t even know if the building is still there for a photo comparison...
I'm wondering if the newer building in the grass market was a result of repairs from the zeppelin raid in ww1?. I think it's right by the White Hart Inn which sustained most of the structural damages? Hard to tell though.
Tell me some thing sir I heard from old people Colton hill. Was at one time in the 16 th century Colton hill was the main rubbish dump for Edinburgh,May be that s some thing you could look in to for your videos
It is really amazing to see the way Edinburgh looked 160 years ago. Thanks for your videos.
I am so very grateful to be able to see. Thank you!
This could easily be a series. There's probably a ton of old Edinburgh photos online
There’s always the interesting part under The Royal Mile. We did The Mary King’s Close tour. I loved every second of it. And all the hauntings going on down there. 😊😊😊😊

The Broonfords are truly brilliant telling about my home town .God you two really love your home town . As i do Duncan.
Those original buildings will still be standing long after the more modern creations have been demolished and replaced. Good video.

The ideas Mrs Broomford has to get you out the house. 😉👏👏👏
I love old pictures to compare with todat.
So a big thank you to you.

Love the historical element and the beautiful old photos!
Thanks so much, Broonfords

Well done Mrs. Broonford.
Stunning, and so much fun. Can you imagine what sort of work, engineering, planning, and money was transferred to make these changes?

That was awesome! Great idea Kirsten! Thanks Tony
That was great seeing old pictures and comparing them to now. So much has changed but not completely
This was so cool! We visited all of these! I agree with others...you could do an entire series if Scotland.
Brilliant video, Tony...Hat's off to Kirsten for coming up with that wonderful idea..!!

Love it! A great idea. I think for the first one you were too low on the hill, and lens differences exaggerate the perspective, too. But fascinating changes.
It is so weird seeing Grass Market, The Royal Mile and Princes Street so empty.
What a brilliant idea! I love these types of history videos, and hope that there may be more like this in the future!
Glad you enjoyed it!
pls more of that
Excellent video! 😊
Really fascinating comparing old Edinburgh and now, all that history! Hope you can do some more😊
Thank you for allowing me to see. Are you able to show me a bit of The KELPIES and Knox House, please?

Not inside no. I never film inside somewhere without permission.
Great video go Clan Broonford, or should I say Mrs Broonford.
Very interesting great video.
Glad you enjoyed it
To me it looks like the building next to Black Bull just had stories added on top. The chimney looks to be in same place but made taller.
That was a great idea! I really enjoyed that.
Great video mate. I lived in Edinburgh all my life and found this so interesting. Any more?
Hopefully gonna do a few more.
Where do you get the old pictures from.....I would love to have some of old Edinburgh....my favourite place ever 🥰
Great video idea! Really enjoyed this.
Can't wait for lockdown to end, not long to go now (hopefully) until normal service resumes
Hopefully. Hope you guys are safe and healthy.

To secure the stock of alcohol on the property.

Where I live was originally a wetlands occupied by Indigenous peoples, then all farming & orchards, now mostly houses. tic tok tic tok goes the clock
"this is fun!" it is Broonfords, it is fun!!!
So fun!
And one more thing.... in 140 years will someone be doing a now and then using your videos? Might want to give them a preemptive shout out. :-)
😂
Yes the buildings have been destroyed since i was a telegram boy in 1955.
Architectural vandalism in Princes St
