The Resilient Mind | Vanessa Potter (our guest)
What is resilience? Psychologists define resilience as the process of adapting well in the face of adversity or trauma, and Vanessa Potter is a living example of this definition.
In 2012, after spending 16 years as an award-winning advertising producer in London, she found herself overnight blind and unable to walk. Vanessa documented her entire journey via an mp3 player. Her quest for answers led her to Cambridge University, persuading neuroscientists to help her research her incredible visual rebirth. After collaborating on an EEG project that invited members of the public to see and hear their own mindful brain waves translated into music and art, Vanessa was invited to give a TEDx talk in Ghent. Vanessa published her first book, Patient H69: The Story of my Second Sight, in 2017. Convinced she had more to learn, she embarked on her own consciousness road-trip, exploring the major schools of meditation, along with hypnotherapy and psychedelics. After 300 hours of sitting still, on a second book, the scientists and Vanessa reveal whether meditation lived up to the hype and provided the key to contentment: Finding My Right Mind: One Woman's Experiment to Put Meditation to the Test (to be released on April 29, 2021).
Talking Brains host Andres Canales-Johnson discusses fundamental questions of life and the human mind with thinkers of diverse and unique backgrounds, from the whole spectrum of the arts and sciences.
