Yes, unfortunately that's why it's addiction. A large part of you doesn't want to take that next drink or even light up that next cigarette, but then you wind up doing it anyway. It's partly a chemical addiction and dependence, but it's also an addiction to habits. Smoking becomes a habit and the habit of smoking - apart from how addicting nicotine is - is a hard thing to break. I quit smoking 13 years ago and still cach myself putting two fingers across my lips when I'm driving, like I'm going to take a drag on a Camel cigarette.
Later on in life, James Taylor, (clean), said that doing drugs was like living the same day over & over again for 18 years & never realizing that all that time had passed.

So true Carly!! I absolutely used drugs in order to be more comfortable and outgoing! I met my first boyfriend at a dance hall. He was adorable and I never would have had the nerve to talk to him without using alcohol first. It started me down a dangerous path where I actually overdosed and was pronounced dead but God brought me back!
Carly really described the problem with drugs. Her explanation made more sense to me than someone just saying "Don't do drugs".
What did she describe exactly maybe I’m missing it. She seemed to just ramble a little about how drugs make u more comfortable around your friends. Which they do but that’s about all they do. It’s a myth that whole creativity thing. Creative ppl tend to take drugs drugs don’t make ya creative. That’s all James was saying.
Yes, but what I think they are not saying is that unfortunately drugs are also lingua franca in certain circles, meaning you will not be accepted if you don’t do what others do. Terrible for young and vulnerable seeking to find friends and soulmates.

G.Z. - True, but teens will find drugs easily working as busboys in restaurants (drugs are rampant among cooks and waiters, incl in high establishments). I am not even going into the world of music and arts and high pressure jobs. Teens like to imitate and belong. Drugs are everywhere. By the time they find out that drug mates are probably not their true soulmates, it may be too late. It would be much better if there are pubs and bars where kids 18+ could meet and have few naughty beers rather than have them confined to house basements where they are popping pills while playing mind numbing video games. Actually bars would benefit everyone psychologically in those sad suburbs. Nothing is more relaxing than few drinks, laughs and opportunities to meet new interesting characters. For any age.

What a beautiful, amazing sweetheart of a woman Carly is. She was my go to female voice of the 70s and beyond. Remember her photo on the cover of Hotcakes, when she was pregnant? Never seen such a glowingly lovely, happy mother to be. Bless her forever with everything she needs to be joyful.
Carly is brilliant to word it that way. Drugs don't set you free, they limit you, your potential, and your ability to appreciate the beauty of human to human connections.

I think what Carly Simon said about it being valuable to feel tense with your friends is important. One realization for me is that if you always have to be drinking when around a certain group of people and you can't enjoy yourself otherwise, then its likely that they aren't your real friends.
So much time wasted in my teens and early 20s with drugs. I totally feel him on that. Looking back some people say oh I had the best time. I look back with regret That I could have used that time to better myself. Live and learn.
Well, you survived and there is still time to learn and enjoy. But, the sad thing is that young people don’t appreaciate the intellectual and physical potential they have. Too bad if it gets wasted on drugs. The age takes its toll and the natural abilities weaken even without drugs.

We were experimenting a lot. With sex, politics, drugs, jobs, life styles, intimacy, all of it. We made mistakes, we changed and grew, sometimes we found ourselves, sometimes we lost ourselves. We found each other and loved freely, not always well. Carly and James were two of our icons, their songs and so many others became themes in our lives, to dance to, to live by. The civil rights movement, women's liberation, ending the Vietnam War, sex and drugs and rock 'n roll. So much that was hopeful and joyful, so much that was painful and disillusioning. I am very very glad to have lived through it the way I did. And to have folks like James Taylor and Carly Simon entertain and lead the way was a blessing beyone measure.
I just stumbled across this interview -- These are two of my favorite artists/singers/songwriters of all time. The talent between the two of them! Incredible. I dont know why the marriage didnt work - but I'm glad that JT kicked his habit and is still with us in 2020!

Yep that definitely rings true here. Apart from a few mushroom trips and weed for the first six months I smoked it, the 20 odd years I messed around with drugs were a total misuse of my time and life. Luckily I woke up and now enjoy life for real and actually remember my experiences.
I never knew that James Taylor overcame drugs . His music has always been very special to me and had a way of calming me down if I was down . My first love recently died of a heroin overdose I kept telling him if he didn’t stop he was gonna die . He said that nothing felt better to him then the drugs . He ultimately lost his life in June . He has done them his whole life . The drugs took everything from him in the end . I’m so glad James Taylor didn’t let the drugs win .

@@aekelly It looked like he was saying "its about me". He did not seem to want to share the spotlight with Carly. That one gesture may have shown one of the main problems in their marriage. It was all about him, not about her and their kids. He was not ready to be a husband or a father, obviously. And he kept on doing the drugs after this interview, despite Carly pleading with him to stop....

James Taylor actually touched my heart with what he's saying in the video.
Even with all this knowledge he still used for 7 more years after this. Goes to show how deep it can get the hooks get in you.
Has nothing to do with knowledge, intelligence, etc.! It's an addiction. Hard to understand unless you've experienced it. And I hope you never do! ;-)
@@julierood1228 thank you for the sentiment! it hasn't something to do with knowledge doesn't it? Meaning learning about the disease is one of the first steps in recovery? Clearly though it's not everything.
I have known and seen physicians die by way of opioid OD, and they knew, has to be hell to know it is going to kill you and wanting it bad, reminds of my ex

Even though it wasn’t his end of use, it did end and shows a productive life can happen. It ultimately is a choice over choosing addiction. Being addicted IS a choice, not just a disease.

Carly divorced James 4 years later. Turns out James was married to the heroin.
What they're saying makes so much sense. Being afraid of intimacy with others or getting to know your real self can be frightening, but definitely not as frightening as being a drug addict. I'm including alcohol as a drug. Once that begins to be #1 in your day, every day, you're really in trouble. I never thought I'd be happy being sober, but I am. No longer living in fear. No longer dreading the morning sunlight. There is hope for everyone who seeks help and recovery.
The drugs really screwed James up, he was admitted to McLean Hospital for mental health issues. He and Carly have not talked in decades, even though they have two kids together, too bad.

I have been clean from heroine for 40 years now.
Drugs gat me closer to the spiritual meanings of life than sobriety ever has. I do not regret my drug experience. I learned a great deal. I choose to be sober because of all I learned from drugs.

Solo Bano read philosophy and fine art at grad school. I found drugs expanded book learning. However, at 70 I still read.

I got similar comments from people who were totally ignorant of rock climbing, all of them saying climbers have a death wish. they couldn't be more wrong. its a life wish. you're experiencing a lot more life and beauty than most. you educate yourself and learn how to use the ropes and the gear for protection. standing in a ledge 500 feet up a cliff and watching a 50 yard wide sheet of lightning explode about 400 yards in front of me, I was sure that I had experienced more by my mid 40s than most will in their lifetimes. there's no argument the highly addictive ones can destroy your life. but I've seen more widespread problems with alcohol in our society.
@@solobano570 possibly, but not necessarily. isxm reading about a place the same as going there? close, but there are things that don't translate, such as scale. Ever BEEN to Yosemite? its one thing to look at the picture from the turnout below inspiration point, but you'll have absolutely no sense of just how massive the walks of El Capitan really are until you stand below it, and even then you need to really look at it. next time you see that picture, look at it very closely. see the fuzzy edges on the top of El Cap? Those are trees on the valley rim. probably around 100' tall. Now scale that down and estimate how small if a spec a man would be. That wall is a mile high, as in 5,000 ft.

Wonderful. First time I've seen this interview. They were a beautiful couple.
Yeah, I knew James was off when I worked his Boston Commons gig as an usher in the summer of 1983. There was a wicked edge on him that just didn't match the musician I knew from his songs - a resistance to showing his vulnerability and to relating with his audience. Darkest before dawn - ya know? Glad it's all history now. Not an easy thing kicking heroin (or crack for that matter). Maybe one of the hardest things ever.
Love James Taylor and his work and always really respected the way he put all that stuff behind him and managed to move on and lead a clean life. I reckon that took a lot of strength. Mind and body.
Good for James to speak out on drug abuse. He's such a talent - never needed drugs.

Insightful words from Carly. Another interpersonal thing that happens when you're high on drugs is that it removes psychological boundaries. That can seem like fun at the time, but it takes its toll in the long run. Those boundaries are there to protect you from predatory wolves. It took me years to rebuild them after I stopped doing drugs - mainly molly, but LSD, mushrooms and plenty of hashish as well.
booze is a drug too. Carly nailed it!
Realising that your friends are in the business of supplying also helps. They aren't doing you any favours about awakening your consciousness or opening doorways, they're moving product for profit.
So....... It really WAS him who walked into the party like he was walking onto a yacht!

I know someone who was (and still might be) a heroin addict. He reminds me so much of James Taylor then. Totally self-absorbed and I am happy that James was able to kick this horrible habit. He seems like he is living a good life now. Perhaps his refusal to see Carly now is because he is afraid to face her without drugs. It's our fantasy for them. Love both of them as singers, "That's The Way I Always Heard It Should Be" still absolutely haunts me 52 years later.

@@spaceghost8995, that's not really true. I have so many people who showed me the way and held on to me when I wanted to run back to what was my norm. The people who believed in me when I couldn't believe in myself will always be in my heart. I can never repay them.

I heard it said recently about drinking to morn the loss for another that it really robs robs u of pain u should be allowing yourself to feel. Cowarldy really that u can't allow yourself to experience a little sadness and loss without masking it up with substance. Its like looking away when u see a good friend suffering. Deserting, running away.
In my twenties, me and my small group of friends, spent every free moment trying to find weed. "Who can we call? Does he have some?" Wasting so much time and money, only to waste more time. At 50yo weed makes me lose the thing that I find in my left hand.

most musicians and artists, people with talent, learn their craft sober, they work hard at it and become good, it's when you get lucky, get some notoriety that the trouble starts, many bands back in their days were literally fed drugs, were made available for them by record companies and the like... the myth is drugs make you more creative, not really, the creative part comes from all the hard work you did to get there, alcohol is even more destructive, more addictive. maybe some light recreational stuff just to loosen up once in a while, but people start to think they need to be high to perform, stage fright can be debilitating, can literally keep an artist from being an artist... the drugs become a crutch, and before long, destructive.
carly makes a good point about friendship and being able to connect, it's the same thing with performing, you can't really get good at it if you have to get lit up just to be able to do it, you have to learn how to do it sober, overcome your fears, and develop as a person.

Year I was born. That being said, drugs change your mood, which is a important and powerful thing.
I don't regret using drugs. It taught me what kind of person I don't want to be. And to me, that was a valuable life lesson.

I wasted 27 yrs doing drugs , i would like to tell any young person to not even think about taking hard drugs of any kind ! Because you have no idea the living hell your life will become , and even if you eventually get clean , you are permanently diminished to some degree depending on how long you were abusing. ....peace.

One of my daughters had a heroin addiction and I lost her for 3 years in a rehab. She is cured now and has 2 wonderful kids. She had a poor school time and no good friends. My other daughter had great, steady school time and some really good close friends. She is clean. For me, A Good Strong Friend circle will help a child to a better future. I hope your children get good, solid friends.

I was watching something the other day about Carly and it talked about how she used to stammer/stutter when talking as a child, but her mother discovered that she didn't do it when she was singing. So she started "singing talking" to remedy the speech problem....and eventually grew out of it as she got older. I've noticed when watching these old clips of her at a still relatively young age that she did still show occasional evidence of the speech problem. It comes across as more of a nervousness (repeating of words) when talking than it does a speech problem. But I don't notice the problem at all on clips of her after she was well into adulthood.
I just noticed it on most of her covers of standards..ea one was no comparison to her delivery on original songs.
The song “Last night (I Didn’t Get To Sleep At All)” (1972) featured the line, “the sleeping pill I took was just a waste of time.“ I would not have thought of using that descriptor, though now I have an idea of whence it emerged in the American consciousness.

I think you got it exactly right. I can imagine how upset she must have been feeling by this point ... and poor James is still all wrapped up in himself. I've found it gut wrenching to watch the two of them sing "You can close your eyes" together. She looks at him with such devotion, while he remains wrapped up in himself. Well they say drugs as if their all the same. I consider alcohol a drug and some have huge problems with it while others enjoy a glass of wine with a meal or with friends. Theirs a big difference between heroin and marijuana, their just totally different in every way. I don’t think marijuana for the vast majority of the people who enjoy it addictive at all and I’ve never had any problems with it.

Taylor has spent most of his life clean and sober. His drug addition, while horrible for him and those who loved him, is in his past. So much more defines him than his addiction. It may be time to move on from this topic.

Right, but not more damaging than "heroin" which is what they are actually referring to. Something like Cannabis, which is medically beneficial and 100% non-lethal is certainly safer than cigarettes which kill 435,000 people a year or alcohol which kills 85,000 people a year. Throughout all of recorded history no one has ever died from cannabis. You might say to yourself, "Why would they outlaw a plant which is harmless for adults to use recreationally and has thousands of health benefits?" you might also say, "For a class one narcotic by law that is on the same level as Heroin why do they say that it itself is harmless but "May lead to harder drugs"? Seems a bit odd to me.
@Max Ruten It's harmless for adults to use, and I don't know anyone but successful professionals who enjoy it. Facts are facts and your personal opinion and limited view of people are of no importance.

Me and my friend tried to quit drugs back in the day only to realize that drugs had become our best friend and went back because we felt lost and that all our other friends were only friends because of our common bond.
Is that why Carly left him? Oh No, I was told Carly had a huge coke addiciton in the 70s and 80s. I am surprised that a guy who made such mellow music as James Taylor was a junkie. My sister met him on the street once in the 80s and she wanted to know where a record store was. He told her. She didnt let him know she knew he was but said he was very nice.
I just read Boys in the Trees, and my understanding is that it was either the drugs or her, and James chose the drugs.

I think the reason why he has absolutely NO relationship with his first wife anymore, is because he associates that time which such shame, that he had to just walk from everything at that time period completely and never look back. He is just Too Ashamed.
