Yup. He started in 1966 (18) and Sweet Baby James came out in 1969 (21). I'm 37 and all his songs I can think of were before I was born, and I can name a lot of McCartney songs since I've been alive!
This is an incredible story and so sad. This was a fantastic interview, I highly recommend giving the whole thing a listen. Howard is far and away the best interviewer on the planet
JT was the first artist signed to their new label, Apple Records, by the Beatles...and he is so humble that I am. It surprised he’s kept this story private for so long when most people would capitalize on it.
I just read this about James Taylor’s encounter with the shooter last week. I was 16 when this happened and never will forget hearing that horrible news from Howard Coselle on MNF
AMAZING ... James Taylor not only encountered Lennons assasin .... but hears the shots that killed him 😔 Only on The Stern Show ....that's the only place you'll hear that story !!! R.I.P. John Lennon !
2:23: "...the next day, the next evening, I was talking to Peter Asher's wife on the phone..." James Taylor just noted this point and kept talking, but it's Peter Asher as in 1. brother of Jane Asher, the girlfriend of Paul McCartney in the 1960's, 2. Peter of Peter & Gordon fame in the 1960's, and 3. (most chillingly) part-owner of the Indica Gallery, where John and Yoko met. Beyond Twilight Zone-level creepy, somehow I think James Taylor has lived that sort of life, because he's been around so many seminal points of music history.
YES Creepy! and also James debut album, came about by a chance meeting with Asher when he was recovering from drugs in England. Then the Beatles gave him an audition and James recorded in the same studio, while the Beatles recorded the White Album.
I've read that he was actually on Chapman's list along with Johnny Carson, David Bowie, even Paul McCartney. That being said I find it sick as a society that we've allowed Chapman to still be breathing.
anivar G -- actually, I'm glad that he's spending his entire life in prison, without hope of parole. If he was dead, he wouldn't have to suffer anything anymore and he IS SUFFERING in prison. I've heard that prison is a constant misery in many ways.
Personally I think if anyone is 100% guilty of murder & are healthy then they should lose their rights as a citizen. Their debt to society basically they should be forced to give up their life when someone needs an organ of theirs to survive.
David Bowie had a Broadway show the following day, Dec 10th and John and Yoko were supposed to be in attendance. They had front row seats, including Mark David Chapman. According to David Bowie, that day there were three empty front row seats.
Unbelievable story! Never heard this before ever from James! I'm sure he was thinking it could have been me..He was just as famous at that point as John, although of course not as popular as any of The Beatles..still could have been a target as well of that nutcase. Very creepy!
Wow, that is such a creepy coincidence! And I bet James is haunted by that whole experience. And what another coincidence that he was talking to Peter Asher’s (brother to Jane) wife! His story made my stomach turn 💔
When a child experiences an abusive father the unresolved anger toward the father that abused him will trigger schizophrenia and manifests acts of great violence the heavier the abuse the more violent the rage .
I live in NY across the park from The Dakota. Everytime I pass that building and see tourists taking selfies with their damn cell phones I am disgusted. They should have some decency and just go to Strawberry Fields which is a two minute walk into the park. I couldn't imagine going to the spot where someone was violently shot and killed that way and take pictures like it's the Statue of Liberty. People are sick!
It’s incredibly historic, I am a Beatles fan who has been one and respected the band and it’s members and impact, and I don’t live in NYC and I *had* to go see the Dakota and ofc visit strawberry field memorial. But to me, the Dakota was and is for more pertinent to the history and more importantly the history and memory of one of my and our and the worlds greatest musical heroes of all time. Sure, I can see how depending on the selfie or the context of it it could be seen as in bad taste. But I wasn’t doing anything other than paying my deepest of respects and paid pilgrimage to that location above all else as it was sacred to me. I think too culturally and generationally the idea of a selfie or of how to persevere a memory or to take a picture as a point of reference to a place visited that means a lot to a great many people, yet sadly for a reason I think we all wish it wasn’t and that John Lennon was still alive, but that was the location he was killed. And considering he was one of the largest figures in contemporary popular culture it’s inevitable there will be flocks of people who go there who maybe don’t understand or comprehend the reverence that should be paid there and that take a picture if one must, but selfies and smiles and fake gang hand signs not so much, im with you there. People are sick, but people are also beautiful too and knowing the impact and positive influence that Lennon and the Beatles and their music had on the world you could also look at that glass to be grateful how close you are to history and to live off Central Park. Be the change you want to see in the world. Instead of projecting ones potential volatility one may be perceiving, we can always choose joy and to reframe the reverence which I’m not saying anyone is questioning here, and take things even if it’s maybe not the exact way we’d do it, yet still the beautiful reverence of multigenerational positive influence on a massive global scale was made and although it was probably the most unnecessary killings of all of recent history and John Lennon should totally still be alive and the guy who killed him and anyone who disrespects or prevents others from paying their respects (in a respectful manner, to your very point) or poses for a selfie in a manner that is tone deaf to the history before them then I agree, but I don’t agree with people are sick across the board. I mean with the pandemic that may be truer now. But I do believe even with that too, that brighter days are ahead! Peace and Love
I totally agree with this statement - I took my kids to Strawberry Fields but refused to cross the street. Why would anyone? The building is beautiful but shown some respect.
I agree. I don't have any issue with people visiting the spot, and you will always have that in your memory. But I feel like taking a photo is over the line. No need. Having the memory is sufficient.
Remember the day Lennon died, got into work & we all just cried!! He taken 5 years off to look after his son. No this wasn’t like Elvis he died from excess of drugs, alcohol , food everything!! But John Lennon the legend was murdered!!!
Of course, James' story is right on. But what puzzles me, is how NO one mentions how Odd or Unusual the Memorial Service in Central Park was, the following Sunday. Because, They played, "Imagine". And within less then 3 seconds in, It started to Snow - Big "goose feathers" of Snow. And as soon as the Music stopped, So did the Snow ! Give me a "logical" answer, to that, if You can.
Rest in peace John Lennon, what a shame ! I wonder if that situation could have been prevented ?!? How many people came in contact with Mark David Chapman prior to him committing the crime ? Was he under psychiatric care prior to the crime ? Does anyone know ? I will have to look this up... Thank you for posting this Howard Stern, may it be a lesson to almost always follow your gut, or "CREEP VIBE".....
🌈Three chairs was empty for the pièce of david bowie ( elephant man ) the evening after the shot . One for john Near him for yoko And the other was for mark chapman . Incredible story.
The door man shot John. The cop who took John to the hospital said that he didn't believe that the guy who was arrested for the shooting shot anyone. Google Dakota doorman. James was very friendly to Dakota visitors before this. I talked with him there once.
James Taylor " I got started at 40"
Also James Taylor: wrote Fire and Rain at 21. Ha.
Wow, I've never heard this story before. Nice that Howard didn't talk over the top of James too much here.
He actually heard the shots that killed lennon, that's wild.
He would be 80 today! Happy birthday John!
And his son Sean is 45 today actually
TheRockNRollGamer95 And it is also Paul & Nancy McCartney’s 9th wedding anniversary.
Same age as ringo starr
Our hearts will never stop aching for John . A massive loss to the world but a much bigger gift
It feels weird to click "Like" on this; but it's a fascinating and chilling story.
Thank you for listening and releasing this interview!!
James Taylor: Sweet dreams and flying machines
Also James Taylor: 5 shots, one under the hammer. They emptied the gun. Sounded like a 38 to me
5 shots one under the hammer…sounds like a good song title
JT: I got started at 40
Me: Racking my brain to remember one song he recorded after 40
exactly.
Yup. He started in 1966 (18) and Sweet Baby James came out in 1969 (21).
I'm 37 and all his songs I can think of were before I was born, and I can name a lot of McCartney songs since I've been alive!
Sad..very sad. James Taylor speaks about John Lennon with great affection and admiration. A nice guy.
This just gave me chills! Can't believe he ran into Chapman & heard the gunshots. Shame 😑 RIP John
No kidding. I've never heard any of this before. Amazing.
How fickle is fate. Imagine John Lennon on Howard talking about how he ran into the guy who killed James Taylor.
Imagine John on the Stern Show period.
"imagine"
bittersweet to use that word
I remember when this happened, was very sad, John Lennon was an incredible songwriter and will always be missed.
This is an incredible story and so sad. This was a fantastic interview, I highly recommend giving the whole thing a listen. Howard is far and away the best interviewer on the planet

doesn’t seem that vain after all 💁🏽♂️
I just read this about James Taylor’s encounter with the shooter last week. I was 16 when this happened and never will forget hearing that horrible news from Howard Coselle on MNF
wow i can’t believe i never heard this story
And Bryan Cranston met Manson at age 12
would the interviewer please let the guest speak
I was a freshman when this happened. I couldn't go to school the next day... so depressing.
Howard was on the air the morning after John was shot and people called in and talked about it.. man oh man, what a terrible day that was
This Blows my mind...seems like it happened yesterday
You should never mention the name of the man whose name should never be mentioned.
AMAZING ...
James Taylor not only encountered Lennons assasin .... but hears the shots that killed him 😔 Only on The Stern Show ....that's the only place you'll hear that story !!! R.I.P. John Lennon !
that'll teach me to read the comments before listening to the whole interview. Spoil more, why don'tcha!
So sad. RIP John - we miss you.

I believe Peter was the first producer of James’ music on the Beatles’ Apple label so they were friends.
Peter also has a weekly show on the Beatles Channel, SiriusXM.
Rest In Power, John Lennon.
I've read that he was actually on Chapman's list along with Johnny Carson, David Bowie, even Paul McCartney. That being said I find it sick as a society that we've allowed Chapman to still be breathing.

You read that really? Source?..... ya didn’t think so.
There's a halfway house. ou know
David Bowie had a Broadway show the following day, Dec 10th and John and Yoko were supposed to be in attendance. They had front row seats, including Mark David Chapman. According to David Bowie, that day there were three empty front row seats.
Never heard this story before, glad Howard just let him talk and also that he dignified James and didn’t start cursing like a five-year-old.
He has a very good memory
Wow! Never heard this story.
It would have been great to see James and John do a record together.
Chilling story...
Cool video. That was really good.
Spooky. Never heard this story. Imagine having John as a neighbor...
I'm at a loss for words..
This story is wild.
I wish Howard Stern would let people tell their own fucking stories. Can't get a word in edge ways.
Got started at 40? Taylor was recording albums when he was 20 and became a big star before he was 30. What's he talking about?
James looks like John Cleese in those old photos...
Love ya James sorry you had to hear that , that night
he was smart, he knew , poor john too trusting, never will be one like him
Unbelievable story! Never heard this before ever from James! I'm sure he was thinking it could have been me..He was just as famous at that point as John, although of course not as popular as any of The Beatles..still could have been a target as well of that nutcase. Very creepy!
Nice piece.
Did he interrupt as much as Howard?
Wow, that is such a creepy coincidence! And I bet James is haunted by that whole experience. And what another coincidence that he was talking to Peter Asher’s (brother to Jane) wife!
His story made my stomach turn 💔
Never knew this story
That’s scary
When a child experiences an abusive father the unresolved anger toward the father that abused him will trigger schizophrenia and manifests acts of great violence the heavier the abuse the more violent the rage .
I want to hear more.
John Lennon, may you RIP
Mark David Chapman makes me wish there were a hell
Repent and hope you are saved, you won't have to find out.
thanks for reporting him
This is the kind of stuff that only happens in New York.
I live in NY across the park from The Dakota. Everytime I pass that building and see tourists taking selfies with their damn cell phones I am disgusted. They should have some decency and just go to Strawberry Fields which is a two minute walk into the park.

A famous site is a famous site. like the roman coliseum or pearl harbor. I highly doubt john would care.
@@bobkilla430 or Dealey Plaza, or Ford’s Theater. It’s only natural for people to want to visit these places and take pictures.
I agree. I don't have any issue with people visiting the spot, and you will always have that in your memory. But I feel like taking a photo is over the line. No need. Having the memory is sufficient.
James Taylor looks so young here. He looks like a teenager.
It was only a few years ago
Remember the day Lennon died, got into work & we all just cried!!
He taken 5 years off to look after his son.
No this wasn’t like Elvis he died from excess of drugs, alcohol , food everything!!
But John Lennon the legend was murdered!!!
I may have James Taylor mixed up with someone else but didn't John say some cutting remarks about his music? I know they had the Apple connection.
Howard, your interviews are incredible, thank you for them.... John in NJ your #1 Fan
1st time hearing it
Now, that's a story!
How creepy right after James met him he killed Lennon 🙄😫😡
Absolutely insane
What's wierd is I just watched an interview where someone was describing John Lennon as behaving the same way and babbling about things.
I wonder if Howard asked James about his friendship with John Belushi?
Belushi had spent the night with De Niro and Robin Williams the night he O'D'd. Bobby cried like a baby when they called his room, that night.
James' song "That's Why I'm Here" mentions John Belushi in the lyrics.
That is so surreal
Of course, James' story is right on. But what puzzles me, is how NO one mentions how Odd or Unusual the Memorial Service in Central Park was, the following Sunday. Because, They played, "Imagine". And within less then 3 seconds in, It started to Snow - Big "goose feathers" of Snow. And as soon as the Music stopped, So did the Snow ! Give me a "logical" answer, to that, if You can.
There's no need for an explanation. Things just happen, and we assign whatever meaning we want to them.
cmon man, like the coincidence of meeting the killer then hearing the killing.
Did James and John record any music together, that’s what I want to know.
He had release more masterpiece if he stay more ...
A great man died to early.
RIP John Lennon
Respect.
I've also heard that JT was on the grassy knoll in Dallas.
He was also in Rome when they shot Pope John Paul II!
John❤❤❤❤
Howard Stern major compensation for calling a life
my english listening not good. Please turn on with english caption
Just imagine
“You can only imagine”
*imagine*
Taylor to Mark David Chapman, “You don’t got a friend. Gotta go now”
This gives me ducking chills. He literally heard the gun shots ???? Wtf?????
WOW what a story! 🙄
I really doubt Elvis would have done much more if he’d have lived.
MKUltra did that.
Person who just goes by vid title: “He was in on it?”
Good story man
I think if the same things, the music we would have had John and elvis lived on
Insane story.
Empty Garden
This makes me sick to my stomach
I almost forgot His name when the News mentioned it, again, Why DONT We just name ALL These Killers/ and Mass Murders “John Freaking Doe” ?!?!?
Without proof we may never know if this was real or not. I'm highly sceptical. He may be misremembering without knowing
James Taylor is very famous, I think he is downplaying himself a bit, though not has famous as John
lol u no it, so true, one of the gifted, what a gentle soul
Sweet Baby James...
Crying again.Horrible tragedy.
Facinating
🌈Three chairs was empty for the pièce of david bowie ( elephant man ) the evening after the shot .
One for john
Near him for yoko
And the other was for mark chapman .
Incredible story.
He heard the shots. That's mad.
UK massive fan
Can I talk with Howard on the phone please????
No
Not sure if James Carville or Greg Fitzsimmons
JT is Awesome!
There are a lot of nutjobs out there.
The door man shot John. The cop who took John to the hospital said that he didn't believe that the guy who was arrested for the shooting shot anyone. Google Dakota doorman.
James was very friendly to Dakota visitors before this. I talked with him there once.
Bullshit. Just because some cop beleives something does not prove the whole evidence wrong.
What color is the sky in your world?
Perdomo was CIA
My God!
A layer...
He looks like Greg Fitzsimmons
