    DELPHINE DESCENDS
After her family is killed and her homeworld occupied, young Kathreen Martin is sent to the distant world of Furoris for re-education. She will live the rest of her life as a serf - to be bought and sold as a commodity of the Imperial Network.
When her only chance of escape is ruined, a chance mistaken identity offers her a new life as the orphaned daughter of a First-Citizen Senator and heiress to a vast fortune.
She vows to claw her way into power to sit among the worlds’ elite. Then, with her own hands, she will reap bloody vengeance on them all.
But to beat them, she must play their game. And she must play it better than them all.
    BLACK MILK
Prometheus has the chance to bring his wife back from the dead, but doing so will mean the destruction of Earth.
Spanning time, planets and dimensions, Black Milk draws to a climactic point in a post-apocalyptic future, where humanity, stranded with no planet to call home, fights to survive against a post-human digital entity that pursues them through the depths of space.
Five lives separated by aeons are inextricably linked by Prometheus’s actions:
Ystil.3 is an AI unit sent back in time from the distant future to investigate Prometheus’s discovery...
The mysterious Lydia has devoted her life to finding a planet that the last remaining humans can call home…
Tom Jones (he’s a HUGE fan!) is an AI trapped inside a digital subspace, lost and desperate to find his way back to his beloved in real-time…
Dr Norma Stanwyck is a neuroscientist from 24th Century Earth whose personal choices ripple throughout time...
Prometheus must learn the necessity of death or the entire universe will be swallowed by his grief.

I gave up on Babylon 5 very quickly. Can you explain why it's so great? To be honest, as soon as a telepath in episode 1 says "funny, somehow I just kneeeeeeeeeeew you were going to say that", it made me cringe very hard, and I turned it off.

@@guruthosamarthruin4459 I know what you mean. As I watched the pilot/first episode of Babylon 5 I found it "cringey" as you describe!
However... I did watch the next few episodes and was greatly rewarded for it. Almost everything was improved. The entire series still managed to have a few clunker episodes but many of them were some of the best TV I've ever seen.
As for the pilot episode, the creator(s) of the series acknowledged that there were problems and actually re-edited it. It was markedly better, still not great, but definitely an improvement. Re-watch it, if you dare!

Almost every episode in the entire series was written by one person, the creator of the show, J. Michael Straczynski, so it all fits together pretty tightly, with dialog and events happening that seem random in an episode, with the payoff coming several episodes - or even seasons - later. Watching it through a second time, you see stuff mentioned offhandedly in the 1st or 2nd season that are major spoilers for things that happen in seasons 3 and 4.

The Expanse had 6 seasons not 5. The Expanse is the only TV science fiction show that I have ever seen that faithfully adapted the sophisticated space opera that evolved in the prose form in the 1940s. Star Trek did this too but not in the depth of the The Expanse. This was the kind of verisimilitude that Heinlein , Asimov and a myriad other writers (especially in the 1940s and 1950s) invented. This was real dirt-under-the-fingernails lived in world building , common on the page but never seen in film or TV science fiction before, unique. (Even tho there is a ton of source material for this on the page.)

I recently watched the series again with a much younger friend who experienced it for the first time, and it was awesome to revisit. Also, that ending...people are still knocked over by it 40 years on.
I feel like, to be fair, if I made a top ten list (which I'm not really about to do), I would feel compelled to only include one Star Trek show, even though I like most of them. In that case it'd be a toss-up between TOS and DS9, for me...maybe, like you, I'd have to go with DS9.

I need to echo some other comments: if all the 90's Star Trek shows qualified, then Babylon 5 should definitely be in there as well if the criteria are complex characters and relationships and plot arcs. Lando's and G'kar's arcs, together and each one separately, alone are brilliant enough for that.

I might suggest, as well, Sliders (from the 1990’s despite later issues with the series), that shows depiction of anybody finding a way to slide into parallel Earths and meeting parallel versions of yourself is a series in need of a reboot. Two other series from the late-2000’s/early-2010’s that should be on this list was SciFy channel’s Eureka (which to this day has to be the perfect blend of sci fi elements and comedy in a rather realistic setting, and it’s mind bending episodes of the characters winding up in the beginning 4th season back in
the town’s 1940’s was pitch perfectly done with also actions taken leading to a parallel time line that could not be erased), and Warehouse 13 to me remains one of the most inventive and uniquely different sci-fi series definitely set in a world that is for the most part familiar to us.

Even so, it has a cult following despite cheap sets and a ship made from plumbing supplies fighting washing up bottles with fins. There cannot be a list of top sci-fi television shows without the original Star Trek. It, more than any other show, set the standard for TV shows to follow. None of the other Star Trek shows would exist without it. When thinking about TV sci-fi, one thinks Gene Roddenberry and one can't think of Roddenberry without thinking Star Trek. This is like a list of detective stories without Sherlock Holmes or cooking shows without Julia Childs. I also suggest the original 60s Lost in Space is another show that brought millions of TV viewers to the genre. A glaring hole is to include Dark Mirror without Twilight Zone. Dark Mirror is but a pale and dim imitation of the ground breaking original. My suggestion is you have a good night's sleep and review this list again after reading the comments. You list is a passable first draft, not an end product.

Great video! Blake’s 7 is unknown to me so I’ll definitely check it out!
So glad to see“Space Above and Beyond” make the cut! Thought I was the only one who remembered it.
Brave also to include Voyager- it receives a lot of hate from people who never watched past the first season.
Likewise happy to see DS9 #1- I pity those who know nothing of the Dominion War. It’s hard for me to choose between DS9 and Galactica though.
Original Trek and Twilight Zone for me are also up there for laying the foundations of so much that followed.
Now do the same for movies!

You won't be disappointed with Blake's 7. The storylines and character building are second to none, just try to ignore the dodgy BBC special effects! Liberator has to be the most beautiful starship ever created.

Wow! Babylon 5 didn't make the list? Ironic considering ST:DS9, a copy of Babylon 5, did…
I guess I am not surprised that Space:1999, Season 1 only, didn't make it, but I personally would have put that ahead of Blake's 7, although I liked that one too.

I've watched all but Blake 7, and while I'll agree with most of the list, I can't believe Babylon 5 did not make the cut. I would consider that at the top of my list along with BSG and Black Mirror.

  • @neilhughes9310

What about Doctor Who? As it has run for so long it is (or was until recently) doing something right.
And Babylon 5? Made, I think, on a smaller budget than the contemporary ST:DS9. The Shadow ships were possibly unique when they appeared.
Thunderbirds? The sheer class of Gerry Anderson.
The Expanse? Yes it is a slick show, but unlike most of the others is merely an audio-visual version of existing material (the books).
But glad you included Space Above And Beyond. It had so much potential.
I'm curious to know how you made your decisions? Did you rate by criteria?

Great upload and very interesting. I do realise that this is a personal opinion but I gotta ask, as I’m curious….. no Farscape, DS9 or Babylon 5? Particularly Farscape, it appears to me it was the first to be self deprecating and full of pop culture references, character growth and humour. Kinda set the blueprint for many hero and space films that have been successful since.

Nice lineup! Surprised to see so many picks I was totally unaware of.
    For me it goes:
    1. Mr. Robot (idc that most things in that show could happen irl, it’s the best cyberpunk media I’ve ever seen and real life right now feels like a sci fi novel anyway)
    2. Andor
    3. Pantheon (the only way to watch it now is piracy tho, AMC+’s treatment of this show is a prime example of why writers are striking rn)
    4. Rick & Morty (Only Season 1 & 2)
    5. Undone
    6. Love, Death, & Robots
    7. Black Mirror
    8. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners
    9. Neon Genesis: Evangelion
    10. Cowboy Bebop

This is my first time watching and enjoyed your list. I'm a Trekkie so any ST franchise show is of interest to me.
But I agree with some of the other comments about missing shows like Babylon 5, SG-1 and Sliders.
I had never heard of Blake's 7 so can't say anything to you including that but if you were looking for a British show why not Doctor Who?
And I will give you two others to consider in the future, Odyssey 5 and The 100

I love the fact that you threw DS9 some love. It is usually overlooked by the much more popular Start Trek: TNG. Other than Blake's 7 and Space Above and Beyond, I like you're Top 10...HOWEVER...MY Top 10 would have the same shows in different order. Topping my list would be either the new Battlestar Gallactica or Start Trek: TNG. My Top 5 would be, in no particular order: Battlestar Gallactica, Start Trek: The Next Generation, The X-Files, Star Trek: DS9, and Fringe. Oh, and let's not forget about Stargate!!! Good list though!👍

Every one on list is good. Big Blake’s 7 fan. I think list needs to be expanded though due the the number of good to excellent sci-fi on television. There are enough that even double the number allotted would leave excellent shows off the list.

While all these lists are subjective, there are certainly shows on your list that I wouldn’t have placed there, but what about Babylon 5, Stargate SG1, Farscape? I loved Space Above and Beyond but if we’re dealing with one season shows I’d place Firefly before SAAB any day.

I can't believe you left out the show on which DS9 was copied from. B5 was set on a space station, tackles political themes, has multiple alien races, dark tones including exploitation and genetic modification and was based on a serialized model allowing for multiple character development. The name of the place is ... Babylon 5.

It's been said but is worth repeating that Babylon 5 is top 3 which for me include TNG and BSG. I'm re-watching Babylon 5 and BSG now with my kids and still truly excellent. DS9 would be if they didn't steal the idea from JMS granted it did stand brilliantly on its own and include some of the best Trek episodes of all time.

Love this list! Never thought I'd see DS9 at the top of any list, my heart belongs to TNG but DS9 was great and deserves recognition. I think i'd remove Fringe as it totally lost coherence in the last couple of years, put Blake 7 where fringe is, put Babylon 5 at number 2 and totally bin off the grim BSG remake that clearly never really had any idea where it was going, in favour of squeezing Firefly onto the list.
