Good list, but I would have included Forbidden Planet. Literally, none of the movies on your list would exist if not for Forbidden Planet. It showed Hollywood and the audience that sci-fi cinema could be about more than just Flash Gordon style adventures for children, and could delve into deeper themes and concepts. With it's groundbreaking visual effects, incredible set design, and innovative electronic music score, it changed everything for the sci-fi genre in film and opened the way for the explosion of more adult oriented sci-fi films in the 60s and 70s and onwards.
1st time the "flying saucer" is operated by humans! Before that, it was always seen as an alien craft, but in this one it's from Earth, and apparently it is part of a fleet! This film was the inspiration for Star Trek, as a whole, and I assume, for Starfleet in particular!
Mostly I agree with you - in particular for placing “2001” at the top spot. I’d also add a some of the “classics”, like “Metropolis” or “Forbidden Planet” (if only for the fact that it was inspired by William Shakespeare!).

@@TheloniusRichtofen not really, you can have science fiction films that are horror movies first like Alien for example and the Thing which is a B movie horror. Its a sub genre called science fiction-horror.
An impossible task really - but a strong list. I think a few 'honourable mentions' would have helped (not really cheating) and others below have mentioned a few equally good contenders for the list. I'd need time to get below a Top 25 I think - 'Planet of the Apes' 'The Ultimate Warrior' 'Soylent Green' anyone?
I agree with others that ‘The day the earth stood still’ and ‘Forbidden planet’ should be on the list. I would also like to suggest ‘Silent running’. Environmentally thought provoking, especially for the time it was made - it was released in 1972.
Great list. So many to choose from. I guess Gravity would be one my choices. It’s a 90 minute thrill ride with some great visuals and a character determination to survive against the all odds.
I don't think i could include interstellar in my top10, it goes from super accurate physics to ignoring it depending on the needs of the plot, which is usually forgivable, but in this case the physics is half of the story. Exchange it for "the thing" (carpenter version) and I'd pretty much agree.
Great list! Normally with this kind of thing I would be swapping loads of entries, but the only changes I would make here is to swap Interstellar for Forbidden Planet, and I would have Fist Contact as my Star Trek entry. I also have massive soft spots for The Black Hole, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Thing and Ad Astra, plus other films in the franchises mentioned. I do like Interstellar but it's not top 10 for me!
A lot of people did not like The Black Hole. That ending left ppl scratching their heads but I enjoyed the film. Glad to see someone who put it in their top 10.
Having a limit of 10 is a constraint. I did wonder is Forbidden Planet would have mode the list, being such a fantastic milestone movie of the 50s; but no… I guess I was not surprised to see Dune on the list. Being a 2-part affair, the new Dune is allowed the luxury of time to tell a bigger story, something that the 1984 version was declined. My preference is still for Lynch's efforts on the basis of Set dressing, Costumes (the still-suits in this version looked more appropriate), Creature effects (I though the worms were better executed), and Casting. No animated entries? Oshii's Ghost in the Shell for instance. Or Otomo's Akira?
Hey there. Great Video - always love sci-fi lists for some reason - your ten are not mine though four or five would carry across - there would certainly be no Star Trek, Star Wars or Terminator in mine. Forbidden Planet, Arrival, Contact - Solaris maybe (either one (shock!) I enjoy both in different ways) - really liked Bladerunner 2049 though - top 10's are difficult...
Yes, films like Akira, Ghost in the Shell, and Paprika need to referenced for their cumulative effect on other films, such as The Matrix and Inception.
Great list! Personally I would have Arrival in the top 3. I would also take out T2 and add Ex Machina in its place. Honourable mentions to Moon, Her & Colossus: The Forbin Project
I love the fact that you didn't apologize at the beginning of the video...just went straight to it telling us your faves👍🏿There's no way everyone is going to agree.
While I love 8 of the 10 movies on your list, respect one (2001) and was highly disappointed with one (Inception), my personal top 10 would be very different. In no particular order, Dune Part 1, Ad Astra, Gattaca, Blade Runner 2049, Oblivion, Interstellar, Annihilation, Arrival, Contact, and the 1984 version of Dune (yes, I love that movie, as flawed as it is). Memorable mentions for me would be Solaris, Rogue One, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, John Carter, Moon, Ex Machina, A Quiet Place, Edge of Tomorrow, Her, Cloud Atlas, and 12 Monkeys.
Does anybody think that the Russian movie Stalker should make the list? I would've picked Aliens instead Alien for the list because it showed that even well armed humans were no match for the xeomorphs. Gordon's Alive! Very, very tricky to whittle this sort of thing down to 10. (Fir me Alien and the Thing are in there, oh and Arrival (honourable mentions for Edge of Tomorrow. and. Flash Gordon)
I managed to watch 2001 at the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign campus cinema in 1997 (the year and campus of Hal's "birth"). I would have Brazil and Gattaca in my top 10.
Avatar, for the world building and spiritual depth. Arrival, for the mind-bending time reality. Sixth Sense, for the exquisite story telling and explosive plot twist. Signs, for the underlying metaphysical message of divine orchestration.
Never been able to get all the way through Blade Runner, so my 10 favourites are Forbidden Planet, Star Wars (IV), Wrath of Khan, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Terminator 2, 2010 (yes, not 2001), Contact, Alien, Empire Strikes Back, Predator.
"Silent Running" (1972) Before R2D2 and C3PO, there were Huey, Dewey, and Louie... astro-droids re-trained for farming by a lone ecologist/astronaut trying to save the last of Earth's vegetation in domed enclosures on a ship on the outskirts of the solar system. Directed by the special effects legend who worked on "2001: A Space Odyssey", Douglas Trumbull , this slow-paced but thoughtful film stars Bruce Dern and features the music of Joan Baez. Careful, those droids will steal your heart!
A good list. But what you can see is that, if you leave Star Wars out of it, no one has really tried to make an epochal space opera. It remains to be seen how Dune will position itself here. I'm afraid we're going to get another 10 Spider Man movies before anyone tries their hand at one of the numerous novel templates.
Everyone that sees this comment should watch Jodorowsky's Dune. It's a doc. that shows the original Dune was never made but is still influencing sci-fi. I'm surprised no on in the comments mentioned Contact, Lucy, The Abyss, or Waterworld (I know, but I liked it). A top 30 list or even more is a video I'd be interested in too.

Making a Top Ten list of anything is going to spark a host of "But what about ...?" comments. So I'll only add one name, Tarkovsky. And now for something completely different. I've seen a number of your videos but only just found out you also write. I'm a hobbyist author and like to support other small time authors, so this morning I bought both your books. Maybe there's enough to pay for a cup of coffee and a chocolate muffin. 👋
I can't say as I like the new version of Dune. I know that the 1984 version is visually dated, but the characters are much more developed in it vs. the 2021 version. Almost none of the characters in the 21 telling have any depth at all.
Thank you for that, I have much the same problem. Mainly for me is the lack of chemistry and familiarity, they all feel like strangers to each other, even the immediate family. A huge contrast to the Lynch version.
My only real quibble is that Dune Part 1 is, well, half a movie, and we haven't seen the second half yet. So leave it off the list (for now anyway) and substitute either Gravity or Dark City.
Good list. My only nit is that I would replace INTERSTELLAR (2014) with ARRIVAL (2016). I would also try to shoehorn in METROPOLIS (1927) a forerunner of most of the films here, and MINORITY REPORT (2002) which I think is quite underrated. Oh, and THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN (1971). It also showed the studios that giving sci-fi movies a higher budget was, in fact, profitable.

I saw it at the age of eight in the year it first came out. And I understood what it meant to the surprise of my Dad.
Me and my GF have started a marathon of these films today, just watched Wrath Of Khan. :)
