    I have owned and have only driven an 82' 123 for near 25 years now !! Though all banged up (can't afford body work) she runs like showroom !! About 8 Mo. back I thought the trans fluid was low. When I added more it wound up being overfilled... She then began to have really odd shifting patterns; especially getting up to speed after entering a freeway from the on ramp.
    I talked to my some 35 years held Benz mechanic about it. We went out for a spin on the freeway and it was doing it. He said it's not the trans, it's the fuel screen in the tank needing cleaning [= fuel starved]. I never got around to doing it.. Up until about 1.5 Mos ago she was still acting the same.....
    THEN, BOOM ! It went back to shifting excellent again and is remaining so !!!
    My mechanic is a great guy and has helped me dozens of times with costs and has even given me some parts or repairs, gratis (I began with him way back when I had the most beautiful but was, according to him, the most problematic Benz ever made; a 74' 280C. And man was he right about that !!) BUT this time, for the first time, I think he was wrong. I believe it WAS due to over filling the trans; the extra fluid finally wearing down to the correct level...
    So, those out there having the same symptoms, you may have simply overfilled your tranny....M, Los Angeles

    Very good man! Just to note, on the 95 OM606 with the 722.4 (w124) the linkage you are referencing to in the beginning (sometime known as the bowden cable) is there but, there is another throttle linkage that can be adjusted and, was night and day in mine! Just need to replace the K2 spring and itll be all good

    Your red modulator on the side of the transmission is set according to pressure inside your transmission and shouldn't be set by feel. The vacuum going to the modulator needs to be correct in order to shift properly. More vacuum gives softer shifts, less vacuum gives harder.

    • @compu85
      @compu85  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, you can use a pressure tap and adjust the modulator on the side of the trans. But the vacuum side really isn't adjustable, so adjusting the modulator a little bit can help fine tune shifting.

      @@compu85 I have a 1982 300CD, so mine is slightly different than yours, but the concept is the same. At 2:30, there is a bolt at 4 o'clock relative to the modulator. For proper adjustment of your transmission, you need to put a banjo/hollow bolt into that hole and read the pressure on a gauge. Turning the key on the modulator will adjust the pressure.
      Chassis 116 300SD (1978 - 1989) - 2.8 bar (40.6 psi)
      Chassis 123 Non turbo (1980 - 1983) - 2.8 bar (40.6 psi)
      Chassis 123.133 (Sedan models) - 2.9 bar (42 psi)
      Chassis 123.153 (Coupe models) - 2.9 bar (42 psi)
      Chassis 123.193 (wagon models) - 3.3 bar (48 psi)
      Chassis 126.120 (300SD sedans) 3.3 bar (48 psi)
      When your transmission is set correctly, you check the vacuum system. Any leaks in any of the components will cause hard shifts.

    Need help My 1986 300SDL doesn’t shift past 2nd gear. I changed the trans filter / transmission modulator / I checked the kick down switch under the drivers floor mat. Changed several Vacuum lines as well. Please help

  • @ThisEuropeanLife
    @ThisEuropeanLife 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Sounds like the VCV valve at the top of the injector pump or a simple vacuum leak. First of all, make sure your vacuum lines are solid. If that doesn't cure the problem, look for information on this unit on Benzworld or Peachparts.

    My 1985 190D works fine in reverse and low range. But when it shifts to drive, it goes into neutral. I changed the fluid, filter, and vacuum modulator valve. No effect. The vacuum reads 13 inches, steady. Any ideas before I buy a rebuilt tranny?

    My 95 E320 is erratic but after if warms up it shift to the upper gears. Does a 6 cyc 722.3 gas, have the same third adjuster attached under its intake manifold. Its sorry bizarre an hour later it wont upshift again, I've tried all the normal stuff what on earth is going on with this transmission. Joe

    • @compu85
      @compu85  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      No your gas car has the vacuum line from the modulator on the transmission going right to the intake vacuum - all the apparatus on the diesels is meant to simulate gasser manifold vacuum.
      Your E320 does have a warm up system on the transmission though, look at the control pressure cable and you'll see it. When the coolant is below some temp it activates the box on the cable which pulls the cable tighter, making the transmission think you're using more throttle, which causes it to hold gears longer.

    Hey bro any idea why a 1995 e320 Mercedes Benz wouldn't reverse ? Is there a possibility that it may be the same cable or is there another cable I can adjust so that the car can go into reverse
    Thanks

    • @compu85
      @compu85  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's not an adjustment issue. If you're sure reverse is being selected (eg, the reverse lights come on) then it's likely an internal transmission issue.

    Hello I have a 1989 190D Automatic. Unfortunately nothing happens when moving into any gear (Drive or Reverse), The transmission just stop working. I am told that it is probably shot. Any ideas? How can you determine if the transmission is bad. The car has 350,000 miles.

    • @compu85
      @compu85  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      First things first... see if the fluid level is correct. With the engine off the dipstick should read high. Check this first - if the fluid is very low the pump can suck in air, making the fluid go foamy and giving a false reading. Once you're sure there is some fluid in the pan start the motor and check it again in park.

    • @phoenixrising2645
      @phoenixrising2645 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** The Fluid level is good and not foamy or burnt smelling. We checked it in park engine running.
