Calathea Roseopicta 'Angela' Care Tips and Propagation - WITH UPDATES!

  • In this episode, I share the care tips of a calathea cultivar and propagate it, showing you a 3 months update at the end of the update. I have previously created an extensive calathea care video, so this one serves as a refresher :) The propagation in this one is not the most successful as I rotted all of the mid-section cuttings. But the technique shown in this episode should work so long as you don’t overwater the mid-section cuttings! They are one of my favorite family to propagate (though not the easiest).

    I love prayer plants! They are so lively because their leaves move around so much on its own compared to other houseplants. It’s like they have their own personality!

    Lol… “just chop it up” … my sister calls you the plant killer. She watched a couple of your videos and all she got from it was that you overwater your plants and you cut up your plants to kill them. But i love your content. Very entertaining and educational.

      Haha I kill them so you don’t have to 🙈 but seriously though we learn most about a plant after have killed them.

      Thats the spirit! If you ask me, the key is in the potting media (airy) and watering (lightly but frequently)

    This came at a great time as I am soon going to divide my calathea and share it with a friend. And I think I’ve been giving mine too much light. Lol

      Haha too much causes it to lose its vibrance and may even cause leaves to curl 😀

    I agree, you DO have to kill a plant many times to understand how to care for it better.

  • @wishingonthemoon1
    @wishingonthemoon1 ปีที่แล้ว

    Honestly, you’re so right about maybe you have to kill them more than once to learn how to care. For beginners, I’d recommend buying ONE prayer plant, whatever type of marantaceae it is. Learn how to care for that, and *then* try to handle more than one.
    I currently have a calathea corner :) Freddie, burle marxii, and roseopicta. I want a ctenanthe and maranta to round out the collection-but now I guess I need to make sure I get a goeppertia too. The peacock plant is now considered a goeppertia. I should throw in a stromanthe too, what the hey.
    GREAT video. Wonderful and useful information, your plants are beautiful.
    Thank you for telling people NOT to mist. Besides all those reasons you said, misting actually mimics rain and causes the stomata (holes in the leaves for gaseous exchange) to close, halting photosynthesis. Misting, unless you have a really, really fine mister and are doing it several, several times a day doesn’t actually boost humidity.
    Humidity needs to be *consistently* higher, which works with using a humidifier (or a rock and water tray, which a study showed increased the humidity only by 0-3% one foot up.

    Calatheas are gingers or at least related. In the Americas these ginger plants evolved to be so beautiful. My mom planted a variegated calathea next to a colony of gingers because she thought they were the same. 😅

    Spider mites are common in dry air climate. With high humidity spider mites are dying.

    Does this one loses it's color pattern when it gets older?

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It shouldnt 😀 losing color may be due to too much light, too little light, or spidermites attack. Could also be nutrient deficiency too. But naturally it should be nicely colored all the way through
