@@adipsousIt actually is for some of us, in other countries. Yes, there are some guns owned and used illegally, and sometimes some nutter gets hold of one and uses it, but it's usually gang related. This makes a great difference, because it takes the weapon away from most ordinary people's lived experience. Apart from a security police officer at an airport, I have never seen a gun being carried in my country. I think I would be very uneasy in a place with concealed, or open, carry permits, but maybe the fear dissipates after time. Does it? Are most gun owners honourable? I look back over my years as a teacher of students aged 11 to 18 years, and several faces leap out to me as people who should not be near scissors, let alone a firearm.
