      I found two games with a similar feeling. Dolphin Spirit (an indie game for kids, that I played with my son) and Car Mechanic Simulator. Dolphin Spirit has people that give you tasks but never help you. One of the people got credit for helping and I didn't see him put any work in. Then with Car Mechanic Simulator the only contact with people is in phone messages from customers. The cars just magically show up and leave. Not one person is seen and it is eerie. Just you alone in a shop without a soul around.

    I think this game could be a lot funner if there was more friendly NPCS. They could roam the map and have natural engagements with the enemy. Always love it when games let you call in ai support as well, makes me care about them more.

    • @Gatorade69
      @Gatorade69 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      That's the thing about open world games, they usually just feel so empty. I really enjoyed Horizon Zero Dawn but the open world was kind of boring, sure there were some roaming NPCs but it really felt like you were the only one existing in that world. It's why I still say years later GTA5 still has a more lived in feeling world.

      @@Gatorade69it's crazy because when it comes to actually being able to interact with the world, HZD does a better job than GTA 5 by a long shot, GTA 5s world feels incredibly alive and believable, but it's just all set dressing.

      That's something Ubisoft's done before too. In Wildlands you could call in the rebels your work with to drop mortars on sicarios or roll up in a truck with some rebels to raid a base.

    • @TheWrathAbove

      Literally every open world game since BotW has taken at least some inspiration from it so that's kind of a given.

    • @hugotraverson
      @hugotraverson ปีที่แล้ว +6

      In many other open world game, the exploration mode exists but is not backed up by the gameplay and is therefore completly broken. For example, RDR2 or AC Origin you mentionned have a lot (if not most) missions which cannot be accomplished entirely without markers on your map.
      In Avatar frontiers of Pandora, the entire system is build around it. There are the navi senses and a lot of vertical/specific landscapes that help making mission goals more easily to recognize. And the whole is being supported by a parkour system which is the best part of the game.

    • @quinnmarchese6313
      @quinnmarchese6313 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@hugotraverson I didnt mention origins, i only know about odyssey and it allows to completely turn off map markers and such--it'll tell you where to go by saying "its north of such and such" or something and only gives you the exact location once you're close enough to scout with Ikaros, not to mention that it is also supported by a parkour system lmao. its also the same in Ghost Recon Breakpoint, just replace the eagle with a drone. in both games, you can completely turn off the HUD too.

    • @Daniel__Nobre
      @Daniel__Nobre ปีที่แล้ว

      The issue is that sometimes they put the objective in such convoluted locations that there is no other way but to activate the markers for a bit, because the game was actually designed with markers in mind.
      It happens sometimes with exploration focused games, but usually it’s not as convoluted as Ubisoft makes them. Because those other games (like Zelda) are created with the baseline of using no markers from the get go.
      Ubisoft just allows to disable them and adds some clues, most of them clearly added as a second thought and sometimes not tested fully.
      I keep saying this but the 80/20 Pareto principle is good for digital development but not for games. Yet AAA game dev continue to apply the same principle.

    I rolled credits on Frontiers of Pandora the other night. While it may have that formula, I personally felt way more incentive to explore and complete the side quests. • @ModishShrink
      @ModishShrink ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Far Cry 5 was such a let down in that regard. The game was dripping in atmosphere, but they spent the whole story suggesting that this radical cult had taken over the county, where in-game you never saw any of that. All the townsfolk were just going about their day, apart from the rolling mobs of militia who were exclusively focused on lynching you.

Maybe in a future with more enemies, more fauna to interact with, who knows. I might still get it in a random sale.

    I'm not an Avatar fan and I think I like this game more than you do. While I agree with most of what you have to say here, I think the story stuff worked a bit better for me than it did for you. I think because it met a couple of fairly low bars you don't often see from these games. First is that it actually has themes and a cohesive message. While it's neither subtle nor nuanced, I find it rare that any especially big games have anything at all to say, unless it's some vague fashy shite. Secondly, I feel like we've never seen a first person open world shooter game be this sincere and positive before. Maybe it's corny, but it's a huge breath of fresh air after decades of edgy Far Cry, Rage and Borderlands stuff. I gave it a free pass for that alone. Finally, I think it's neat how they threaded the needle of having you play as a Na'vi while also making you a character with more human knowledge than Na'vi knowledge. The films just straight up centred some guy so that it could have all the other characters explain stuff to him, which made it fall into that ol' "white savior" trope, but here they really had their cake and ate it. All in all, as a non-Avatar fan, it felt to me like Pandora was made for this, to be a video game world. It made the movies feel like rush job adaptations of that game world in comparison, but as if they accidentally started by making the films. Sorry for the long response, but almost nobody is playing this game, let alone having good-faith discussions about it online. Thanks for the video, keep up the good work!

      There is a lot of discussion among fans at least. Most of them, including me absolutely love it. But of course, the game has it's flaws. But the possibility to fly freely on your ikran in an open world Pandora alone, is a dream come true for us. And frankly I am surprised that you, as non fan like it :) Because it seems to me like lots of things there was made just for fans 😀 And I am also very pleased that you like the message. A rare sight in today's cynical world. Those themes are core to the whole franchise, not just this game.

    This is one of those games where I loved the early game but the more I played, the less I liked it. The story doesn't really go anywhere, feels like Ubi thought "Be the Navi" was good enough and ran with it for a 40 hours. Unfortunately I think I left liking Avatar as a whole a lot less and I was a big fan of the first movie, this game made me realize the Navi aren't that interesting and they do a lot of weird things just because.

    I got the platinum trophy a few weeks back and while I enjoyed the game, getting 100% kind of killed it for me. So many of the clan contributions and other side tasks are just so boring and tedious

    Sorry but your Wrong avatar 2009 is a far far better game than this. Avatar 2009 was third person=better and let you choose human or Navi=better. Frontiers of pandora is bad and generic.

    We just need a mod that removes all the story shit and turns it into a survival exploration game.
    like so many times Ubisoft have the all the components to a fun game, then they just arrange them in the most boring way possible.

    I'm trying so hard not to judge the game without playing it, but the fact that it *literally starts* with THE BIG BAD HUMANS just actively murdering alien children is so dumb and on the nose. To be fair, it does sum up the writing of the original Avatar movie perfectly, but good lord... 🤦‍♂

    I do really enjoy the world design, graphics, traversal and the core feel of combat, but everything else.. the story, the structure, the shitty ubisoft power level system and gear scores, etc.. are all really bad. The story in particular alternated between insanely dry/generic and unbelievably cringe. The writing in these Ubisoft open world games are really where it falls apart the most IMO. With that said, gorgeous audio/visual presentation and the immersion factor alone really made me enjoy this game more than most recent Ubisoft output. With that said, they desperately need to gut their formula and do something entirely new, it's beyond tiring at this point
