Yeah.. So sad to know she won't grow old in music business and decided to step back. Well, but it's her choice that I had to respect her. Now, I think that her decision that day was a great idea. Maybe I would be more sad if see her and the band less famous than the bands nowadays that keep growing up through the years. I hope she just enjoy her heritage now and memorize her fame.

She never wanted the fame and always craved going back to a private life. Then, in 1994, her sister Jenny woke up in the middle of the night with a knife to her throat. A German fan had broken into her house and demanded to meet all band members. This incident shook her sister Linn so badly that she wanted to step away from the limelight. Ace of Base became a world-wide success very quickly, but their journey through it all wasn't easy.

It was a Nazi submarine base, if I remember correctly--hardly a big secret, but obscure enough that the rest of the band probably weren't aware of the meaning unless they're into World War II documentaries. I'm interested in that subject, but even so, I only recall seeing this "Base of Aces" in one documentary. In retrospect, it's kind of perversely funny, I think. Ulf undoubtedly got a kick out of it, even though he has publicly renounced any involvement with neo-Nazis (admitted his involvement, but had some nasty things to say about neo-Nazis, so he's probably reformed, I hope).

Some of the concerts in Latin American on TH-cam were recorded at a time when she was suffering from voice problems (sheer vocal fatigue from singing multiple concerts on consecutive days without enough rest, plus her normal singing voice is soft and gets strained more easily under loud concert conditions than some), which exacerbated her panic attacks. She knew she wasn't performing nearly as well as she could, and put a lot of pressure on herself, which eventually led to stage fright and panic attacks. She started taking anti-anxiety medication for this, but didn't like to do that (messed with her head) and didn't want to resort to narcotics like some she knew of (including her idol Michael Jackson), so she'd had enough and stepped out of the spotlight. A lot of pop singers have to deal with problems like these, but they'd do anything to be famous and make more money, while Linn didn't care and just wanted to quit, and live a quiet and happy life in obscurity. Then there were all of the stalkers--it wasn't just that one who attacked Jenny (demanding to see Linn), but multiple, including one nutcase who was caught trying to climb the outside of a hotel to get into Linn's room. Maybe Linn eventually discovered the real inspiration of the band's name, or not, but even if she did, in comparison to the other things she went through, this would have been nothing. The final straw, at least during the late 1990s, was the way she and Jenny were treated by the nasty record industry--with no respect at all, as artists. Her "final-final" straw came when Jonas and Ulf treated Jenny and her with similar contempt. She and Jonas joked about it at the beginning of this video, but it wouldn't be so funny anymore in the early 2000s when Linn gamely decided to come back and sing with Jenny up front once more. Jonas and Ulf wanted full creative control, even telling Linn and Jenny how to sing and look, so Linn quit completely this time and effectively told the guys to do it themselves. Jonas and Ulf would later illicitly (in violation of their legal contract) kick Jenny out of the band and hire a couple of younger singers, which didn't work out at all, especially for the Berggrens as a family. The new singers were then ignored until they decided to quit on their own (more disrespect from Jonas and Ulf!). It's strange to see them joking about Jonas calling Linn "stupid" for not following his instructions regarding her singing. At the time, I would have laughed with them. I mean, they're siblings, and I get into arguments with my sister, too, in which we might call each other names, but we can take it and we know we love each other. But in this case, it grew into something more and worse. Linn also made, uh, forceful suggestions regarding Jonas' music, and sometimes got her way, too, like with the change of the key of "All That She Wants", which would become their biggest hit. But at least there was some give and take. Later, Jonas and Ulf put all of the emphasis on fame and money, given their falling fortunes, and were insistent on having full creative control. They disenfranchised Linn and Jenny by telling the press a fake origin story about Ace of Base being the two of them plus a couple of singers who were added later, implying that they (the two guys) were really the band, and could plug in any two female singers. The truth, of course, is that Jonas did start the band, but Linn and Jenny were there for years before they were Ace of Base, several members left, Ulf joined later, and then they became Ace of Base. But regardless, the guys followed through by kicking Jenny, who wanted some measure of creative control like before, out of the band after Linn had left on her own. For me, the full truth is that Linn and Jenny both made unique contributions in many ways, including creative, that made Ace of Band who they were at their height, and that as singers, they were not generically interchangeable with any other pair of singers.
