People here are the same as everywhere. They love their families and strive for a better life for their children. The opioid crisis hit here the same as everywhere else. The difference is that the fewer people you live around the higher the liklihood that you'll run into an addict. We aren't separated from each other like you see in big cities. That's all. Most of the people who initially became addicted to opioids here have gotten help or died. There are tweakers here on meth though. Aren't they everywhere? Yes. So when you think about it, the world has changed everywhere, but we are still a sleepy little town by comparison.

I grew up in Lee County Virginia and my parents and I when I was a kid used to always either go to Middlesboro, KY or Kingsport, TN shopping and to eat. I can remember when Middlesboro Mall was new and filled up with national chains like Foot Locker, and even local family ran stores like B&H Shoes. I also remember when Middlesboro had a Service Merchandise and a Jerry's Restaurant. Now I go back there and aside from Belk, Roses, Shoe Show and a Dollar Tree along with the Cracker Barrel there is nothing there. I'd honestly go there more now if they'd get something like a Marshalls and Ollies. Because as it stands, other than Cracker Barrel I have no reason to go there and I'm not the only one that feels that way. As from here in VA I can go up to the Norton Wise area and there's a lot more shopping and things to do. I remember when Norton and Wise also had a drug problem tho, but I think most of Middlesboros problems are it's depressed, there's no jobs really outside of the Coca Cola plant, and there's just nothing there. Sad to see, when I had so many good memories made down there with my parents on weekend trips. Not too long ago the mall also wasn't as dead as it is now, but it's a lovely unchanged example of what a true 1980s mall looked like.

Well. From someone who literally lives here your being dramatic. Yes there is a lot of drugs and overdose but it’s also safer than other places. We get tourists all the time to discover the Cumberland Gap. I understand it’s a new place for you to be at but keep your opinions to yourself man. It’s not as bad as you made it to be and I’ve grew up here. My uncle lives in the neighborhood he has to kids and they go out and play all the time. It’s safer than most places.
