This is absolutely the highlight of the week when Shawn posts a new video to the My Self Reliance channel. Much love to you, Calli, and your family Shawn. ❤️✌️😎
Shawn I like seeing Bullwinkle walk across the trail cam at the start of the videos. That’s a good size moose! You also need to cut back on the protein, ripping trees out of the ground without cutting. 😀🤣. When you were making the fire and showed the view across the river and meadow, wow that spot is beautiful! Your going to love that view every morning! That green house is definitely an asset. Everything is very well thought out. Awesome job Shawn! 👍👍👍👍 You get me so hungry when you cook over the fire😃
Chicago watches the colors change, the labor continue and Cali in the middle of it all. It reminds me that autumn for us is just around the corner with the leaves here just beginning to yellow. Love watching the cabin build and amazes me that when I watch today's video at 7:00AM on a Saturday morning, there have already been 10,000 views. Must be something popular going on up there in the north woods of Canada!

Hi Shawn, good evening from Romania, been watching you a lot lately, and I have to say that this channel brought me out in the outdoors. I’ve been seeing my beech and pine covered mountains a lot differently since I discovered your chanel. Thank you for that, sir, and I hope I’ll see more from you soon!
I am very glad that the work is progressing and the house will soon be under the roof. "Just don't explode halfway - comrade heart, comrade heart ..." Good luck!
Away fro the hussle and bussle of life, you in your little corner of the world, bring peace and contentment to me while I eat and apple for my supper and watch you dine on that mouthwatering stew. My Friday is complete.thank you.
You have inspired me to build my own tiny log cabin over the last few years in an old unmanaged logging forest here in...lets say Europe ( I used only deadwood and its not a native forest so it shouldn't really be here to begin with) I have managed to raise the walls and install a doorframe and something that just about classifies as a door using only hand tools just before it was unfortunately discovered by people who are ..lets say not very tolerant about Bushcraft. So I had to give up this project after 2 years of hard work. However ive learned a lot and I now know that this is what I want to do for the rest of my life. A sincere thank you for reminding me on why I am here and what I am suppose to do
Thank you for the beautiful drone shots of the property and the leaves changing colors. I have grown up just South of you in WNY and love this changing of seasons. I only wish that it was easier to cross the border as in days past, I miss my treks to Ontario and our neighbors to the North. The only thing that your video was missing was the sound of the loons, that sound to me is the fond reminder of all the great times camping, making our portage from lake to lake, and just enjoying being closer to nature.
the first time I heard a loon, we were camping in the Quebec Wilderness. That lonely sound made me so homesick. I since got to just love that bird and studied it. Coming from Switzerland, this was a new sound and one that I will never forget.
My brother and I built a cabin a few years ago in Quebec. Took 3 summers off and on to get it all closed in. Its 16x20 with an 8 foot loft overhanging off the front. Built a steel frame about 4 feet of the ground for a foundation much like Shawn's (without a basement). Used a chainblock just like the one in this video. Brings back a lot of memories... Deer flies and chainsaw dust. Had a couple kids since then and now we go up to cabin all the time for lunches on the open fire. Its a fun project. Good luck on the build and be safe!
This cabin is shaping up to be wonderfully solid, elevated, and gorgeous. I can just imagine the delightful views you and your family will have while sipping your morning tea or coffee!!! I will be right there too with my coffee in hand!
This episode has it all ...the precision of the axed out notches, the great cooking, the incredible colors of a fall forest . The shot above the fog yet below the clouds is award winning photography truly incredible Shawn....!!!
Just marvelous planning, prep and plain hard work. You make it look simple to move 200 to 300 kg logs...along with the notching and tight baseplate fit. You sir, are one skilled wilderness craftsman. I don't envy you the amount of work you have lying ahead of you (in the dead of winter) but it sure looks like it will be one beauty of a cabin. And we'll be here to cheer you on Shawn. Cheers.
Never stop the endings so beautifully done and peaceful, even the choice in music. Excited to see this cabin build, officially hooked over 2 years now !

Good afternoon, Mr. James. I saw your video yesterday where you and Cali had lunch and gave new meaning to "going dutch". I thought the workshop was really beefy but pales in comparison to the cabin. The timber looks massive. Am loving the footage of the changing of the season. The fall colors of the leaves always impresses me. Best regards to you and your family and thanks for the extra long video today. It was a pleasure.
I haven't watched this channel for quite a while since discovering it early in the pandemic. Gotta say, he has locked in his cinematography. It was good then and even better now.

Winter is closing in and I'm wondering how close the workshop you built last fall and winter is from the new cabin. I can see the greenhouse and gardens from the cabin..,and I'm guessing the outhouse is also close, but the workshop must be out of view. Lovely colors and love you let nature do the talking. Thank you for sharing this next adventure. I turned 70 and have had to slow down because of health, but my soul is right there with you building.

Awesome! I wasn’t expecting this today, but I surely am glad you’re here! The walls are started on the cabin now. How very exciting, Shawn. Sweet 🧡Cali is there ready to help with whatever you need…Y’all make a great team. Autumn in Canada is the place to be.🇨🇦 Oh so beautiful. 🙏
I miss that metal clinking noise when you use the axe now to chop some wood. I guess your special axe is still over at the workshop. Love the sound it makes as it splits those logs. ♥️
All your hand ✋ works and hard work for building your log cabin in the off grid is admirable!!! I have never seen a outstanding being like you able to endure all the toughness, wilderness and hand lifting of all these logs, of course, the machine helps in "slicing" the trunks. And our sweet Kali, is enjoying herself much in the water... And you're cooking all the fresh food from your organic garden ...what a wonderful way of off-grid living!!! You have done so 👍👍👍well...and I can't wait to see till the final product is up and smiling. Love, Laurencia, from Singapore 🇸🇬 💋❤️👍👍👍

This is going to be the Beverly Hills Cabin , love every minute of it. Thank you for the video and as a Golden mum a huge ty to Cali , she is wonderful , she still the show when on camera. Ty , keep up the good job!
You are a better man than I. I would have used the chainsaw to make the saddles. Absolutely beautiful up there. Love the shot where Cali comes up and sits next to you and your arm is around her. May it bring endless seasons of joy, peace, and love to you and your family. Thank you for sharing another amazing build.

53:47 "You got a friend in me" Such a beautifull moment, love all of your video's man, bring me peace and entertains me a lot!
Amazing Shawn! Take care and God Bless! I wished we could come and give you a helping hand! I truly mean that. You share so much with your followers ! I wished we could give back for what you have have shared and learned from your videos! Thanks again Shawn!
Wow … Jetzt habe ich mir tatsächlich ein paar Tage Zeit gelassen, um dieses erste Video nach zweiwöchiger Pause vollständig anzuschauen.
Eine Wohltat für Geist und Seele.
TGIF everyone. A blessed Thanksgiving Weekend to my fellow Canadians.
I got more enjoyment watching this video than I have watching any major film Hollywood puts out these days. Best video Mr James has put out in awhile. Glad he's finding his build grove again.
That grouse stew looks fabulous. You’re a man of many talents, Shawn.
I think that was bear in the stew, the grouse was on the grill....but you are correct, both looked great!
Nice to know there will be at least one person ( and his dog) left after the melt down. You sir are an inspiration to those who know!!!
Te View from above of Canadian Woods is astounding! Takes ur breath away!
Watching you lay the foundation to the Cabin is like an Action movie!
You are a Master of the Cabin building craft! It’s just supersized now!
God speed !🙏
I didn't know about you're videos I found them by just browsing through TH-cam videos .Now I really enjoy watching your videos.Cali is such an awesome beautiful dog I really love watching her.And I'm amazed at how much work you can accomplish by yourself and your hand tools.Keep up the great work you do for your family.God bless you and Cali and stay safe.
I would love this life no stress just live in the moment and build your dream cabin in the woods living amongst nature so peaceful
My favorite shot is at 52:39, the framing of the trees and the fire contrasting the cold, downcast, rainy weather is fantastic. My favorite kind of weather.
Getting into the guts of the cabin. I'm hooked. All the build up to this point is well worth the wait.
The very last clip of you moving the log into place... So satisfying. Like a glove.
And… the last 5 minutes Shawn….. Stunning!
I miss that metal clinking noise when you use the axe now to chop some wood. I guess your special axe is still over at the workshop. Love the sound it makes as it splits those logs. ♥️
Mystic and a vision of peace overwhelms me!
I love watching him work, you bring me peace of mind after my work day running around the city but I love watching him cook more.
New beginnings, so exciting! Best channel on TH-cam hands down.
Thank you for reminding me my purpose. I'm living in the city to heal my body, for this truth( to live in conformity with nature). Period. I'm at peace in nature. I feel home there. And simplicity seems so right for me. Thank you for these videos, you do so much peace and safety friend.
The area around you is absolutely breathtaking.Watching you work is pure joy. To see you start to bring the cabin to life.
I'll make it short,
although writing is one of my passions.
Perfection is the art of repetition.
This is a wonderful creation
in all its wisdom.
Excellence permeates as you go along watching it.
So patience and savour the mastery.
We have a Master crafting his dreams, while we get to see them.
I am in owe. 🇦🇺
That sound of the arrow coming in and hitting is magic to my ears. Gorgeous country. Smart dog!
My dear sir I am in awe I could watch you build all day. You are a master builder and to build the cabin all by your self is astounding. You know all the tricks of the trade. Thank you for sharing.
This is so damn cool. Feels like a big moment seeing those first logs go down.
Thank God it's Friday and Shawn is back.🤗 It's moving forward and I can't wait. Greetings from Germany. 🇩🇪
I have no clue where you get all your energy from. Watching you make me tired already. It looks like a lot of work to built this cabin, but I am sure it will be awesome at the end. Can't wait to see it finished. I am no outdoor person at all , but I find your channel so very interesting. Thank you for sharing. I have a problem going on a picnic LOLOL
There is nothing better than to go shopping for your veggies in your own garden!
The cabin is underway, It looks like you have it covered. The pulley system is working well. 👍👍👍
This is the video that I have been waiting for. Its also long the way I like them. Its a wonderful video. I could watch Shawn James work all day long.
Really big logs. Hard work. Its very satisfying to see one log fall aside and fit perfectly into another. All the best for your build Shawn!
Slowly but surely, and living the bush life every day. Shawn you're a lucky man!
The vegetables, the work, the scenery. All spectacular. Hard work but love the often videos. Bless you
We LOVE your channel!!!! We have less than 7 months to complete the tear down of the old 1840’s home place along with its companion barn, get them packed up and shipped out to Montana to begin the up-cycled♻️, off grid cabin build! We can’t thank you enough for all of the awesome ideas and fantastic content here on your Instagram page- we can’t wait to incorporate some of these ideas into our upcoming build! There is nothing more magical than building a new to us home to live in that was once lived in and loved by someone else so long ago! If those walls could talk! Thanks again for being such an amazing inspiration- April and Jeff
We missed you! Glad trip was good, you deserved a family break.
You and Callie sitting together is just precious.
I was waiting for that first log to flop over to see what Cali was gonna do. Those little feet were spinning. Looks so peaceful there. Lots of work Shawn. Good to see things come together little by little. Thanks for sharing, Iowa is watching. Got up to 85 Degrees today. Drizzle in the mornings. Nice time of year, if it could just hold till March. :)
First time you build the cabin i thought "wow is perfect" now , that you had makes all your followers a "bit of experts" , i think , this is much better, i can anticipate some of the thigs that you are going to do and the effort on making them from you are less, much productive, you know now how to do it better . This is going to be the Beverly Hills Cabin , love every minute of it. Thank you for the video and as a Golden mum a huge ty to Cali , she is wonderful , she still the show when on camera. Ty , keep up the good job!
Yeah I was worried it would be small like the last cabin. Lovin this one. Can't wait to see the next video.
You are a better man than I. I would have used the chainsaw to make the saddles. Absolutely beautiful up there. Love the shot where Cali comes up and sits next to you and your arm is around her. Peace and love in both your hearts. May your cabin rise safely around you. May it shelter you and yours sooner than your expected. May it bring endless seasons of joy, peace, and love to you and your family. Thank you for sharing another amazing build.
LOL. A chainsaw??? I would of hired a crew and drank coffee. LOL
For me, the best of the greatness was~1:07:00 --the mixing of the wistful, uplifting, poignant music and beautiful visually uplifting drone shots--letting us know that winter is coming, but first we have the magnificent Fall to enjoy--inspiring, hopeful, and so very enjoyable; absolutely brilliant! Thank you, Shawn, for taking us along for the ride. I am indebted to you and Cali in more ways than I can say.
I have to say Shawn, I love the skill of the logs rolling into place after you cut them out 👍
Have to just love the Honda Pioneer. It's so versatile. I use mine around the property all the time.
