I wouldn't say holt was wrong or right and the same thing for Terry like both have there pros and cons. Holts will help the future at the cost of now while Terry helps the now while at the cost of the future. There is no right and wrong in this situation like with most real world messages

Holt just needed a moment like that to remind him that he isn't just a black cop, but he is a black cop in a position to make a difference, just like he always told himself he do should he be in that position.

The unrealisticness is real. First off. When was the last time you saw a cop on a foot patrol that wasn’t a festival or city event? Next. Cops don’t profile anyone over 30. Why? Because most street crimes are committed by people under 30. Third, unless you’re in the Deep South you aren’t going to get racially profiled because every officer has a bodycam. And whichever news publication breaks the story will receive millions in ad dollars and licensing fees. And whichever agency is caught doing it gets a nice visit from the FBI or the Federal DOJ to clean house. Fourth, any large department with over 200 officers will have IA force you into being removed off the force. NYC and LA especially don’t play with that stuff.
I just love it when a comedy flips over to something real without feeling forced or out of place. Really shows how actors and writer's show some range.
The fact hitchcock told Scully exactly what was going on and for what I believe is the first time ever didn't make everyone in the room feel disgusting because of what he said really goes to show he had some character development.

“Family Matters” episode where Eddie got humiliated, and his cop dad Carl didn't believe him at first. When Carl confronted the police that did it, one of them “Well if he told us his father was a cop-” Carl: *slams something* “So the only reason you'd let him go is because his father is a cop??”

I remember seeing this episode for the first time and being so mad at that scumbag sorry excuse for a cop. And mad at Holt for trying to convince Terry not to speak up and try to make his community safer. It makes more sense now, knowing more about the corruption in police departments and the punishments the good cops can face for reporting the bad ones. I'm glad Holt did the right thing in the end. It's a shame Terry got prevented from being the Liaison because he wanted to make the community safer, but a bad apple spoils the bunch. And Terry cared about the "bunch".

So, weird that I have to spell it out, but: - Terry was literally just walking down the street and when he approached the cop, non threateningly, the bad cop put his hand over his gun, immediately escalating the situation. - The guy was not responding to a call, so he just assumed that a black guy in that neighborhood was up to no good, despite having no prior information about any crimes, suspects, or anything of the sort. He was walking around a neighborhood for no reason, saw a black guy with a toy, and immediately jumped to the conclusion that he was doing something illegal. This is racial profiling. - He threatened Terry after he was complying with the cop's instructions. Terry said something while having both his hands behind his head and facing away from the cop. He then got cut off by the guy threatening him with violence by saying "keep talking and see what happens", which is obviously an abuse of the cop's power. Is talking illegal or threatening to the cop in any way? - The guy literally says "you and I both know that you don't LOOK LIKE YOU BELONG IN THIS NEIGHBORHOOD". What's that suppose to mean, other than "you're black so you don't look like you belong in this affluent neighborhood"?

We were all shocked but it was clearly for the betterment of Terrys career. Standing up to it is fine but a Captain that can directly fire someone is better than a surgent that just request for a punishment.
He explains that when he was younger he had no official to back him up or give him support in any way or an official like him in a high position. So he worked to change the system Now the system is different and there’s a lot more black cops for example. And holt is now the person who can back terry up. Holt worked his way up so people like can him can support cops like young holt.
That's why he admitted he was wrong at the end. This shows how good a leader he is to admit to his own mistakes. Most "leaders" just sweep it under the rug.
100% that was my same thought when he said that. Happy he changed his mind in the end but all I could think is “here you are with your own department and still not listening to your officers”.
This was a masterful storytelling technique. Having someone as big and intimidating as Terry experience this truly shows how powerless discrimination can make you feel.
This show handled some very sensitive issues like this very tastefully and professionally. I really appreciated these episodes and was sad that the show had to end because of these larger issues.
I know a lot of shows do these episodes, but I love how they did this one, it didn’t feel forced and felt natural 6:08-6:47 this part especially was deep and Terry delivers it so well and real
This episode is one of my favourite in B99. The way they approach such a controversial topic is really nuanced and well thought out. Way better than the most recent seasons where it feels like they just throw in complex topics with a tiny fraction of this episode’s care and thought.

Episodes like this one are what set Brooklyn 99 apart from so many other sitcoms. This episode ends in a satisfying manner while showing that these situations don't just end with "the good guys win;" life is too messy and complicated for that. The writers always show that the people who have been wronged don't necessarily come out ahead, but they do emerge from the experience stronger and wiser. It's also worth noting that these episodes are really hard to do: you have to make sure that the show stays funny without making fun of the issue itself.
I don't watch a lot of Brooklyn 99, but my favourite thing about it compared to other sitcoms is that the characters feel like cops who are funny people, not comedians playing cops. There was another cop comedy, I forget the name, but it had Alfred Molina as the lead coroner, and it was so absurd and over the top that I never felt connected to anything going on.
Wow I was fully expecting to see the bad cop walking out his precinct holding a written warning only to find his car tires slashed. But they made it into something powerful.

What I enjoy the most of this, is Captain Holt admitting he was wrong. Terry was right, in that Holt, of all people, should be aware of what its like to be in that position. And Holt *is* in a position to make a change now, and it would be an affront to not do something. It takes a lot of character to admit you were wrong, and to admit you too, need to change, even if he had the best of intentions initially. Terry mentioning "my girls wont be able to play the cop card" was a great argument to make as well.
As much as I hate to admit it. I’m not even sure if the complaint really did much to that cops career. Bad cops can get multiple complaints and still keep their jobs cause they stop just before entering fireable offense territory
It stains their jacket and keeps them from getting promoted and / or put on special assignments. And with enough complaints be put on the termination block.
yeah this is a real babied version of wht would happen, first the person submitting the complaint is shuned by the entire force, then physical threats of violence, NYPD is a gang and complaining about a coworker is what equates to snitching in a normal gang
This always the mentality. "Sit back & take whatever abuse comes your way now. Because in 10, 20, 30 years you'll be in a situation to fix it then. So don't rock the boat because that would be inconvenient for us now." But by then you'll be so jaded by it the whole situation, you won't think there's ever going to be a way to fix it. And those people, who claimed to support you but really don't, and then asked you to shut up about it will have already moved on themselves & really not care anymore.
Actually its the opposite. I hate using public toilets too and if i have to use one i refuse to sit down on the toilet seat and usually just squat on the floor instead. if i squat low enough i dont even have to wipe after so I'm actually saving precious time by squatting on the floor
but look at the world today compared to 30 years prior, those people who were patient are now able to fix things and have been able to change attitudes across the world. quick fixes dont solve large problems unfortunately. america is still a young county youll get there eventually

But as I stated the people who have been there for 30 years have themselves most of the time become jaded by the whole thing that now that they are in a position of power & authority don't want to rock the proverbial boat out of fear of losing their status. Very few, if any, maintain that sense of idealism they had because they have grown too comfortable with how things are.
My favorite thing is that Hitchcock, dumbest, stupidest most unlikeable character in the show, still knows what systemic injustice and racial profiling is. Meaning people who claim to not, or refuse to acknowledge them, are dumber even than he is.
Hitchcock and Scilly know what's up. There's that episode (Haven't seen it) where they don't list a witness because their undocumented and don't want them getting caught. They even mention that it's why people wouldn't go to the police to report crimes.
One of the best scenes in my opinion from the whole show. It went about telling the pressing story in the right way, and it made you feel for the characters. Great writing, great acting, and the best way to tell this story without preaching.😊
There's another guy I think he's on this show. Tall bald black guy. He plays a cop in this. The movie collateral with Tom cruise and in phonebooth with Collins Farnell.
Sadly complaints get buried. Not an opinion. I tried to file a complaint once. They flat out told me it would get buried. And it did. Police will never be honored as long as they protect their own over the public.
One of the first comedy series I've come across to have a white person use "woke" properly in a serious situations. The term was created for bring attention to this very issue. At some point it got tuned into a derogatory word toward liberals who try and change a conservative system. That being said, there are more then a few people who take woke behavior waaay overboard.
Honestly, I usually only see "woke" being used in discussions about things like Disney blackwashing white characters or forcing a character's homosexuality down our throats. If every gay character was like Holt where being gay wasn't the central focus, there wouldn't be as much backlash. Obviously you'd still get some, but not nearly as much.
Well the term "woke" was created because of the injustice black people were facing at the hands of the police due to racial profiling and unprovoked shootings. Eventually other minority groups started to use the term to champion their own causes (which is totally fine). This was so gorgeously done. Because we understand Terry’s anger, his sadness and his desperate desire for quick change but what was also beautiful was Holt’s hesitation. Because he is right and as someone who joined the force at a completely different time he did have to pick and choose his battles and contented himself with a longer game. Both are such real responses and were beautifully acted.
It also shows the paradox of the _Black Lives Matter_ and _Blue Lives Matter_ as a police... and across the ages... There's only so much they can do, and also should do.
This has happened to me dozens of times just because of who i am. In Scotland if you were a young man / teen and you dressed a certain way you would just be stopped and searched everyday. I was searched by police over 30 times for no reason and i have no criminal record to this day. All because of the way i looked. Its a horrible feeling being profiled.
Just think if Sarge had gotten angry and resisted he might have been shot especially with his size because his size makes him as dangerous at that distance as any knife or gun.

Does it make sense to ask questions if someone seems out of place? Absolutely. But the issue here is, nine times out of ten, there will be a completely reasonable explanation for what’s going on, like Terry being in his own neighborhood. What you have to worry about is that off chance that there is something bad going on. That’s why you investigate. But the other nine times are why you treat the other person with respect. You can carry out a respectful conversation at a distance that gives you a decent reactionary gap (forget the 21 foot rule, so many people have gotten shot over that), so you can keep yourself safe while also not making a potentially innocent person feel like a criminal. So do I understand the bad cop’s instinct to investigate? Yes. But I can’t in any way say that the way he carried out that investigation was the right way, or even a right way.

It didn't feel woke bc it didn't feel forced. The situation was set up naturally, and the cop wasn't overly racist with everything. He was still racist, but they wrote him in a way that made it seem like he was just a regular dude. Like if was written more poorly then one could expect the cop to use more slurs or Terry mention unreasonable use of force or something. The dude apologized, albeit for the wrong reasons, but he still said sorry.
They really capture the reasoning of the cop to a surprising level of detail. It’s unclear whether he’s uncomfortable with saying he’s racist or is not consciously aware of it, but he genuinely doesn’t believe he did anything wrong. His excuses are so clearly thought out and defended with such sincerity. He sees himself as righteous, and therefore won’t admit anything because that would imply wrongdoing. It’s a very common process in law enforcement to rationalise unethical actions with ‘doing the job’. Brilliant script work.
THIS is how you do representation. THIS is how you do social issues and topical\current events and social commentary. Not the hamfisted farce that Hollywood is force feeding us frequently.

This was a masterful storytelling technique. Having someone as big and intimidating as Terry experience this truly shows how powerless discrimination can make you feel.
This show handled some very sensitive issues like this very tastefully and professionally. I really appreciated these episodes and was sad that the show had to end because of these larger issues.
I know a lot of shows do these episodes, but I love how they did this one, it didn’t feel forced and felt natural

This episode is one of my favourite in B99. The way they approach such a controversial topic is really nuanced and well thought out. Way better than the most recent seasons where it feels like they just throw in complex topics with a tiny fraction of this episode’s care and thought.

@@tacoman1690q8 Yeah usually, people saying something is "too woke" (assuming they're not just some asshole who throws the word around for anything that doesn't align with their world views) the real problem they have is with the presentation of the message rather than the message itself. Because honestly, why would any rational person be against things like equal treatment and protection for all people and ending pointless discrimination to allow more people to pursue things they want in life? What people seem to hate is the feeling of that topic being "forced" on them personally, even if it's logically better for our society as a whole.
@@Lazarultos For me it's only a issue if the messages aren't presented in a believable way for the world im watching, A interesting way i haven't gotten it before, or with a different end message than what we expected. A good example is the new castlevania nocturne... We all know slavery is bad.. that's really all it says over and over and over again.

Episodes like this one are what set Brooklyn 99 apart from so many other sitcoms. This episode ends in a satisfying manner while showing that these situations don't just end with "the good guys win;" life is too messy and complicated for that. The writers always show that the people who have been wronged don't necessarily come out ahead, but they do emerge from the experience stronger and wiser.
It's also worth noting that these episodes are really hard to do: you have to make sure that the show stays funny without making fun of the issue itself.
I don't watch a lot of Brooklyn 99, but my favourite thing about it compared to other sitcoms is that the characters feel like cops who are funny people, not comedians playing cops. There was another cop comedy, I forget the name, but it had Alfred Molina as the lead coroner, and it was so absurd and over the top that I never felt connected to anything going on.

That cop reminds me of the one from The Dark Knight Rises.
It’s amazing how B99 can treat such serious matter naturally and with gravitas for a comedy show, better than shows that are supposed to be serious

And then there’s Amy who jumps from sergeant to deputy chief, that’s several ranks higher im happy for her but that was kinda bullshit, she’ll be earning significantly more than Terry who’s served for at least 15 more years

What I enjoy the most of this, is Captain Holt admitting he was wrong. Terry was right, in that Holt, of all people, should be aware of what its like to be in that position. And Holt *is* in a position to make a change now, and it would be an affront to not do something. It takes a lot of character to admit you were wrong, and to admit you too, need to change, even if he had the best of intentions initially.
Terry mentioning "my girls wont be able to play the cop card" was a great argument to make as well.
As much as I hate to admit it. I’m not even sure if the complaint really did much to that cops career. Bad cops can get multiple complaints and still keep their jobs cause they stop just before entering fireable offense territory

yeah this is a real babied version of wht would happen, first the person submitting the complaint is shuned by the entire force, then physical threats of violence, NYPD is a gang and complaining about a coworker is what equates to snitching in a normal gang
This always the mentality. "Sit back & take whatever abuse comes your way now. Because in 10, 20, 30 years you'll be in a situation to fix it then. So don't rock the boat because that would be inconvenient for us now." But by then you'll be so jaded by it the whole situation, you won't think there's ever going to be a way to fix it. And those people, who claimed to support you but really don't, and then asked you to shut up about it will have already moved on themselves & really not care anymore.
Actually its the opposite. I hate using public toilets too and if i have to use one i refuse to sit down on the toilet seat and usually just squat on the floor instead. if i squat low enough i dont even have to wipe after so I'm actually saving precious time by squatting on the floor

But as I stated the people who have been there for 30 years have themselves most of the time become jaded by the whole thing that now that they are in a position of power & authority don't want to rock the proverbial boat out of fear of losing their status. Very few, if any, maintain that sense of idealism they had because they have grown too comfortable with how things are.

i love this episode because reporting a bad situation can go good or bad. In life the right or wrong decision can lead to s***ty outcome.
This felt distinctly like a "very special episode" but that wasn't such a bad thing.
Yet there was no format change like the heist episodes. Just beautifully written.

One of the best scenes in my opinion from the whole show. It went about telling the pressing story in the right way, and it made you feel for the characters. Great writing, great acting, and the best way to tell this story without preaching.😊

I love how this show has characters from all walks of life and portrays them realistically and likable without being preachy or in your face about it
This is one of my favorite episodes in the whole show because it keeps the whole premise of the show while bringing up a serious topic.

Sadly complaints get buried. Not an opinion. I tried to file a complaint once. They flat out told me it would get buried. And it did. Police will never be honored as long as they protect their own over the public.
One of the first comedy series I've come across to have a white person use "woke" properly in a serious situations. The term was created for bring attention to this very issue. At some point it got tuned into a derogatory word toward liberals who try and change a conservative system. That being said, there are more then a few people who take woke behavior waaay overboard.
Honestly, I usually only see "woke" being used in discussions about things like Disney blackwashing white characters or forcing a character's homosexuality down our throats. If every gay character was like Holt where being gay wasn't the central focus, there wouldn't be as much backlash. Obviously you'd still get some, but not nearly as much.
Well the term "woke" was created because of the injustice black people were facing at the hands of the police due to racial profiling and unprovoked shootings. Eventually other minority groups started to use the term to champion their own causes (which is totally fine). However, seeing that guy on the couch (I don't watch the show) explain the issue and say "You need to get woke" was great because that is exact the right way to use that term. @@RowdyBrian17

This was so gorgeously done. Because we understand Terry’s anger, his sadness and his desperate desire for quick change but what was also beautiful was Holt’s hesitation. Because he is right and as someone who joined the force at a completely different time he did have to pick and choose his battles and contented himself with a longer game. Both are such real responses and were beautifully acted.
It also shows the paradox of the _Black Lives Matter_ and _Blue Lives Matter_ as a police... and across the ages...
There's only so much they can do, and also should do.

This has happened to me dozens of times just because of who i am. In Scotland if you were a young man / teen and you dressed a certain way you would just be stopped and searched everyday. I was searched by police over 30 times for no reason and i have no criminal record to this day. All because of the way i looked. Its a horrible feeling being profiled.

Does it make sense to ask questions if someone seems out of place? Absolutely. But the issue here is, nine times out of ten, there will be a completely reasonable explanation for what’s going on, like Terry being in his own neighborhood. What you have to worry about is that off chance that there is something bad going on. That’s why you investigate. But the other nine times are why you treat the other person with respect. You can carry out a respectful conversation at a distance that gives you a decent reactionary gap (forget the 21 foot rule, so many people have gotten shot over that), so you can keep yourself safe while also not making a potentially innocent person feel like a criminal. So do I understand the bad cop’s instinct to investigate? Yes. But I can’t in any way say that the way he carried out that investigation was the right way, or even a right way.

If you just passed by asking "Pretty dark for cleaning the car, isn't it?" and let the man answer properly, all the understandable information would have been gathered.

It didn't feel woke bc it didn't feel forced. The situation was set up naturally, and the cop wasn't overly racist with everything. He was still racist, but they wrote him in a way that made it seem like he was just a regular dude. Like if was written more poorly then one could expect the cop to use more slurs or Terry mention unreasonable use of force or something. The dude apologized, albeit for the wrong reasons, but he still said sorry.

They really capture the reasoning of the cop to a surprising level of detail. It’s unclear whether he’s uncomfortable with saying he’s racist or is not consciously aware of it, but he genuinely doesn’t believe he did anything wrong. His excuses are so clearly thought out and defended with such sincerity. He sees himself as righteous, and therefore won’t admit anything because that would imply wrongdoing. It’s a very common process in law enforcement to rationalise unethical actions with ‘doing the job’. Brilliant script work.

I really appreciate the nuance of this, Holt talking about rising through the ranks to make a difference, whilst having rose through the ranks to make a difference and then refusing to do so when the time comes for fear of repercussions.

Everyone does a great job here with material that requires range, but I'd like to highlight Desmond Harrington as the panicky cop, because this kind of role is a risk.
Hoult was right. And he was trying to tell Terry that, and yes Terry had a great reason for wanting things to change. I loved this episode. It shows both narrative.
