      @@adventuringwithclare The case in Oslob Cebu is a little complicated. The fishermen in Oslob used to hunt the whale sharks and eat them or sell them. So the local government found a way to keep the whale sharks safe and that is through eco-tourism with the whale sharks as the main attraction. Instead of hunting them, the fishermen of Oslob are now earning through tourism. If tourism in Oslob dry up due to protests (on feeding the whale sharks), the fishermen might hunt the whale sharks again.

    You missed the most beautiful island in the world - Batanes Philippines!
    This island is an AVATAR AND BREATHTAKING!
    Sort of Ireland and Scotland only in tropical settings.
    TH-cam it -- see for yourself.
    There are two you have not seen in the Philippines.
    The DUGONG "manatee of the Philippines" different from Florida Manatee. Very elusive.
    The 2nd one is the rare sighting of ORCA (a family of Orca on living in the Philippines) It's been seen in BOHOL ISLAND.

    Karaoke and rooster crowing plus trike noise is very common in the province in the Philippines. Donsol in the Bicol province often have Whale shark. Oslob in Cebu you are almost guaranteed to see a Whale shark but not advisable since they feed them.

    • @adventuringwithclare
      @adventuringwithclare  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes the karaoke and roosters took a bit of getting used to, but we heard it is common everywhere!

  • @justbrowsin1783
    @justbrowsin1783 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I think Oslob, Cebu is the most well-known tourist spot for Whaleshark diving in the Phillipines, tho I'm not so sure that fisher folks out there do something with them to make the whalesharks stay, like feeding them.
    I think it may be a greater experience of encounter if you see them in the wild in their own terms and just observe their beauty.

    • @adventuringwithclare
      @adventuringwithclare  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Exactly right, in Oslob there are so many whale sharks because they are being fed. Which is why I decided to swim with them in Leyte because I agree with you, it is a much greater experience seeing them in their natural habitat!

      I went with Southern Leyte Divers in Padre Burgos, but I’ve heard you can dive with them ethically in Donsol as well!

    OMG you should've just went to Oslob, in the south of Cebu. Plenty of Whale Sharks flock over there

      I’ve heard there are TONS in Oslob! But I know they feed the whale sharks there so I was wanting to find somewhere to see them a bit more in their natural habitat!

    You should have dove there, that's one of the best dive spots in the Philippines, and also fixes your qualms about chasing vs encountering because if you get lucky there's a high chance of encountering the whale shark while diving. The other dive hotspot for whale shark sightings in the Philippines is Tubbataha. Donsol, the other natural whale shark snorkeling hotspot is just whale shark snorkeling and a manta ray cleaning station, Sogod Bay has better diving that can keep people occupied even if whale sharks are not found.
    If you do return to that area, the neighbouring island of Samar has great spelunking, and that's land travel because there's a bridge between the 2
