  • Real-life flatland! In this video I use micro-thin layers to simulate two dimensions to see if life could exist in 2 dimensions instead of 3. I use my drawing on water technique to show you how weird a two-dimensional world would be. Then I show you some other problems in 2D such as having a digestive tract. Then I talk about Conway's Game of Life and if that is truly alive or not.
    Also, watch me hit 1 millions subs! Thanks everyone!

    I remember once, me and a few friends discussed that, for a 2D being, us interacting with them would amount to something "popping in and out of existence." So, to them, we'd be Eldritch Abominations, Ghosts, Demons, etc due to not being able to quite explain what they experienced.
    That'd be a good setup for some Cosmic Horror story.

    Carl Sagan did an awesome demonstration on life in two dimensions. First of all he essentially said that no matter what shape the life form is in, all it would be able to see in the world is straight lines with absolutely zero thickness.
    He used paper shapes for the example and mentioned that even paper (or really any object in our world) is not a perfect example because it does have some thickness

    There could be "tubes" if it was fitted with several "hooks" making the tube a serie of "airlocks" that would open and close successively. But otherwise for digestive processes, it's probable the best solution would be to vomit the end-product... Sorry. But this is how it'd work at the cellular level, and I'm sure it would be the same macroscopically.

    • @andreab380
      @andreab380 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This was my very first thought when I read of the same "digestive tube" problem in one of Stephen Hawking's book.
      The analysis in the video (and in Hawking) is formally right, but it lacks imagination...

    In 2D, they cannot see inside a circle without breaking it
    In 3D, we can see inside a circle but not inside a sphere
    Which means in 4D we can see inside a sphere without breaking it

    • @TheActionLab
      @TheActionLab  6 ปีที่แล้ว +142

      Yes you are right! A 4D being would be able to see inside of any three-dimensional object without opening it. Just as in three dimensions we can see inside of a circle without opening it but two dimensional creatures cannot see inside of the circle like you mentioned

    5:03 no, that's not true. You can still have a tube system the say way that, for example, canal locks like the ones in the Panama Canal work, alternating one another on opening anc closing while the element passes and is processed.
    We're not just open tubes, the same way in nature membranes aren't just permeable all the time.

    Canadian Professor Alexander Dewdney wrote a novel on the topic, The Planiverse. It talks about life in a 2D world with 2D physics and how things might work. Gets into a lot of detail, including talking about how people climb over others, and how zipper organs are used to make digestion work, and proposes electrical systems and all kinds of technology. Good read if you're really interested in the topic.

    • @graphite2786
      @graphite2786 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      abj I agree , it's a great book that really helps you understand the full concepts of 2d existence.
      The biology was extremely interesting, as was the concept of engineering gears on a 2d surface.

    • @marklane2718
      @marklane2718 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      For a 2-dimensional creature to climb over something, it would have to be able to ascend into the third dimension. A 2-dimensional being would be aware of forward - backward, and side to side. Coming up against an obstacle, it would only think to go around it and not even contemplate the option of climbing over it, as the concepts of down and up are beyond its comprehension.

    • @128Gigabytes
      @128Gigabytes 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Mark Lane271 Why do you assume up and down are the ones that out of question?
      Most people think of 2D as up, down, left, right
      You know, like a 2D game
      Seems strange you've randomly decided that up and down would be the nonexistant directions

    What would vision be like in a 2 dimensional world? Wouldn't everything we see be a line?

    • @TheActionLab
      @TheActionLab  6 ปีที่แล้ว +54

      Yes I should have mentioned that! Vision would be just seeing lines you wouldn’t be able to see any shape, just lines. Kind of like in three dimensions we really can only see a two dimensional

    • @henrycgs
      @henrycgs 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Yeah, a line. But there would still be things like perspective and colors and you could still make out the shapes of things. Like the way you can tell what a cube is in 3D even though the image formed is 2D.

    • @Daniel-il4gr
      @Daniel-il4gr 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Deba Kun Well, you would not be able to see at all. Light is a wave that propagates in three dimensions (the wave vector, electric, and magnetic fields are all orthogonal to each other), so in a two dimensional world light could not even exist.

      Nope. I'm Charles Darwin that doesn't mean I don't love physics I only love biology. nooo. But whether shadows are 2d or not is a great point for debate. I'm just a teenager. Not a scientist. I don't have much knowledge but ya this is a great point of debate. Let's ask vsauce!

    • @fakegandhi5577
      @fakegandhi5577 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@NoWarInBaSingSe I'm going to have to disagree. But I think to say that a shadow is 3d you must say that shadow has volume. No one will say shadow has depth or volume. Only surface area. Therefore it is 2d

      It's nothing new. Flat Land was written in the late 1800's, and Conway's game of life has been around since the 80's.
      There's also the book The Planiverse, written in the 80's which went into detail of how a 2D universe would have to work, covering biology problems (including the one in the video), and more subtle problems -
      Taking a description from Wikipedia -
      _"The Technology of Arde is explored in great detail. For example, all houses are underground, so as not to be demolished by the periodic 2D rivers; nails are useless for attaching two objects, tape and glue are used instead, most Ardean creatures don't have deuterostomic digestive tracts since they would split into two, and have instead evolved alternatives; and even games such as one-dimensional Alak, everything is designed to work in 2D. An appendix explains some fundamentals of Ardean two-dimensional physics and chemistry."_

    A two dimensional object is beyond current reasoning. atomic structures are three dimensional, an object Even an atom thick has a third dimension. So regardless how thin an object it is in our universe it will always have a third dimension. So the atomic structures in a two dimensional plane would have to be entirely different than the ones we know and understand today. In other words it's beyond our comprehension.
