Babylon Berlin - Zu Asche, Zu Staub Crime, Drama, Thriller | TV Series (2017) Colognian commissioner Gereon Rath moves to Berlin, the epicenter of political and social changes in the Golden Twenties.
Never seen a more compelling scene in recent German cinema. The references to Weimar (Caligari in particular), the allusions to automata and the Hitler salute, combined with the deep humanity of all characters involved, are just stunning. A depth you can, otherwise, find only in the best Anglo-American shows. As a German-American, I'm really proud of this scene, although, of course, I had no part in its production. It reminds me of the time in the 20s when German cinema was on par with burgeoning Hollywood, if not better. Very well done, indeed.
Just in case if you ever wonder about it, the drummer of the Moka Efti Orchestra, is none other than Lawrence Mullins, an American musician, producer, and composer, with his often-used stage name Toby Dammit; who worked with Iggy Pop, Swans, The Residents, Iggy and The Stooges, Silver Apples and Nick Cave among others. In Babylon Berlin he appears as the big band drummer Willy Schuricke.
This is the best show I have ever seen. I have watched it, all 36 episodes twice in a row. I’ve taken notes and I’m going to do a commentary on many of the things people miss. Simply superb I wish all the actors and actresses could know how wonderful this is from so many peoples perspective
An absolutely superb series! Unique in so many ways, storyline, characters, the actors playing those characters. It never ceased fascinating me throughout its run.
What I like most about it is even though a drama, it doesn't try to hit us with forced character emotions. Whenever the story is so touching, it's really real and it's beyond the strife of the character. Particularly Charlotte, and her struggle with her family. S2E2, when she just couldn't take it anymore and went to Janicke, and for the first time, we saw her eating in a proper home, proper home food with proper evening, instead of scumbag bunch of siblings who're trying to dig their dead mother's things when she was still lying lifeless in their home. Apart from the character's own story, Charlotte to me, represents the German people in this show. Everyone was broken in its own way after the war, but Charlotte is the one who has to survive the ghastly economical situation and completely broken pride of German nation. Rath was, in his own way, thriving in Weimar Republic, Bruno was a man who had his own gravitas in it, etc. But Charlotte is the one who was truly suffering what came after WW1
They didn't care because WW1 and the financial depredation after was so appalling. What could possibly be worse. All well and good to look at a TV show. Can you predict your future? Do think it is going to be any better.
That's one of the big points of these series. German nation was completely fucked by the war, and Weimar Republic was failing at seperating itself from the Reich, it was failing to revive German economy, an entire nation was being devoured by despair. Charlotte is a great representation of what Germans were become. Her ruthlessness was caused by how little she had to lose, her overall lack of morals was because she couldn't suffer pride, she was prostituting herself because she saw no other way, she wanted to work honestly for the police, but even then, her chances were slim because of the economy. Germans were basically let themselves into a recklessness that came from despair and as Weimar Republic crumbled, all this partying, art and freedom will be completely reversed.
Fantastic... it's reminds me how a society drowning into Weimar's inflation and turmoil, was still able to produce such pieces of art and shows... now that we are going to Weimar 2.0 reloaded 100 years later, I want to see what our modern society is able to produce.
Have you noticed, in the past 20 years, Hollywood movies have no soul. This movie, in particular this Night Club scene, reaches out and grabs your soul and shakes it.
@@MrPro897 Let's hope not. Corruption, anger over a perceived 'Betrayal', hidden lust for war, drug fueled exuberance and euphoria. So much potential lost. Oh, and Germany is building a new tank...it is called 'Panther'.
@@MrPro897 Sad, but true. It was undermined from within. Weak men lead to tough times. Then, in May of 1945, nearly all the women in Berlin, all ages, got raped.
Gott, das Universum, Himmel und Erde hatten sich verbündet und vereinbart und das magische Berlin von 1920 erschaffen, 👏👏👏👏👏💙💙💙 Bravo Herzlichen Glückwunsch!
The most underrated series ever. It.shows how and where it all started. The Weimer Republic a global sell out from the start. It was an undermining on an epic scale. Poverty, opulence, corruption, debauchery, all fertile ground for what was coming.
Spoiler alert spoiler alert spoiler spoiler alert don't read on if you haven't see all the episodes of all 4 series................... its quiet sad when you look back as the 2 guys Charlotte is dancing with. Die before the end of the series. Both decent guys trying to uncover the truth. And expose wrong doing. Here they are having a good time
Really? New York City, 1920's, Booze, Prohibition, Charleston Dance, Jazz and loads of money. If you are going to choose the 1920's, pick New York City.
Why weren't the dancers dressed in bananas Black? Historically they were. And where are the Black jazz musicians? The Weimar was an encouraging space for Blacks - as long as it lasted.
The Banana Skirt is a reminiscence of Josephine Baker, who invented this banana dance. She first came to Berlin in 1926 and fell in love with the city and the city with her. She felt freer there than anywhere else and was a celebrated star. From this time, the dance with the banana skirt has remained in formative memory. By the way, the skirt of the dancers in Mokka Efti is made of 16 bananas - just like Josephine Baker wore it.
@@ruhri0411 She really loved Paris and became a French citizen. She was also somewhat partial to Berlin and Karl Gustav Vollmoeller who lived at Pariser Platz.
The chorus line was a complete Josephine Baker ripoff. Kinda interesting but definitely not compatible with the era. Not sure exactly what the goal was.
Josephine Baker defined the Weimar-Era, so not sure what you mean? Btw. what song did they rip off exactly? I'm genuinely curious because it must be catchy lol
hi, @itbartable . we would like to know more about "Anette furnes" or tell us where you got the song. We are interested in this intriguing story and any information you know and tell us would be very helpful.
Das war der Moment wo ich mich in die Serie so richtig verliebt habe
Can we take a moment to appreciate the genius of this choreography and art direction!!!!
This is a visually stunning gothic mystery classic. I love it. The music is stunning ! So dark. Totally hooked
I really want another season.

This scene to me captures the feeling of being young with one’s whole life ahead of one. I can’t explain why.
Ah I finally got the Fritz Lang Metropolis connection!

My drummer rises to the occasion to keep up with the change in tempo, cadence, and other beats I can't keep up with. WOW.
This is quickly climbing the ranks of the best show I’ve ever seen on Netflix
Makes me think these people had no idea the hell that was around the corner

Roaring 20s!!!! Let's rock this shiz! Great song too if you look at the lyrics
Given this scene takes place in 1929, a few months before the Wall St Crash, it could be seen as a fitting end to the Roaring 20’s as it were?

It's not the music of the 1930s because the series is not about the 1930s. It's about our age.
