I was at that no hitter in the kingdome and remember Mike Heath swinging at that high fastball like it was yesterday! In those days he was still a wild curiosity with a lot of control problems. During the pre game warm up my friend actually booed him and called him a bum. I told him you never know, he might throw a no hitter or something to which he just rolled his eyes. Once it got to around the fifth inning we started thinking about it. After that glorious game he never booed him again and within a couple years Randy Johnson had established himself as a star in the league and many great years would follow. True story!

What gets me about Dale Murphy is there is no way anyone who watched baseball and followed baseball regular in the early 1980s could say they didn't consider the best player in the game.....Murphy hit his peak in the early half of the 80s and from like 1982 through 1987 no one could say he wasn't one of the best players......however there are so many players in the Hall Of Fame right now who never were considered ever to be the best or one of the best players in the game during their careers mainly because the veterans committee has put far too many dead ball era players in that really were just solid not great players in their era's. Anyone who knew anything about baseball in the early to mid 80s knew about Murphy. He should be in the hall of fame for that alone....and the idiots who argue that well he was great but he didn't do it enough years......well by gosh explain to me then if you will why we have guys like Dizzy Dean in the hall of fame who was a great legendary pitcher but he only did it for about 5 years and the rest of his numbers were pedestrian ....I mean the sports writers talk out of both sides of their mouths....the thing about Murphy that no one ever talks about is the fact Murphy was the ideal role model of a star athlete.....Major League Baseball should have promoted him more during his career peak because he was the kind of player who kept his mouth shut didn't complain and show his self like so many players with no respect for anything do today.....and Murphy did his talking with his talent on the field....instead of crying about he didn't like something he just did what he was paid to do and that was play ball. Instead of running his mouth and bragging like the Reggie Jacksons of those days...Murphy just went out and played his game....and from 1982 through 1987 he was easily one of the top 3 players in the game and in my opinion the best in the game during those years in all of Baseball....and that is coming from guy who loved Mike Schmidt and Schmidt was my favorite player and still is today all time...but Schmidt was at his peak in 80 and 81 and while still in his prime from 82 through 87......Murphy took over the status as top player in the game I believe in 82 and kept it through 85.....would have probably been the best in game in 86 if not playing banged up some and then in 87 he put up his career high in homers in a juiced ball season. I think the fact that Murphy came along just before the steroid era caused a lot of new young fans in the 1990s to disrespect him and never give him credit for how dominate a player he was in the 1980s. Because in the 90s you suddenly had so many guys hitting 50 homers that people didnt think anything of Murphys numbers when looking at them anymore........same thing with Mike Schmidt I mean Schmidt was one of the best players ever in my opinion and I remember being at a card show years ago in the early 200's and I still collected Schmidt cards I always have and have hundreds of the same cards in many cases.....but I am at this show and some guy has some of his cards from the late 70s in a dollar box and he sees me pull them out and he was like you a Philly fan and I was like no just a Schmidt fan he was my favorite player growing up and the guy was like yeah well he is a hall of famer but if he played today he wouldnt be.. I was like what do you mean and the guy was like because everybody hits 30 homers a year now days he would be just another player......that made me so mad I threw down what I had in my hands and walked off from that dealers table........steroids destroyed the game I grew up loving and created an entire generation of fans who really believe that guys like Brady Anderson who hit 50 homers one year were better players than guys like Dale Murphy and that makes me so mad....if it wasn't for the steroid era...Murphy would be a hall of famer first or second ballot........because he deserved it......but steroids caused far to many sports writers to believe a guy should hit 40 homers a year to be hall of fame worthy
