    How cool is Mattingly? What a down to Earth dude! Other than the members of the '84 Tigers, he was my favorite ball player when I was a kid.

    I was the perfect age when Donnie baseball came to N.Y....a wide eyed 13 year old. 8 straight games with a homer. I can still feel how awesome that streak was!!

      I grew up in NY and still live in NY. Big Yankees fan. Don Mattingly remains my all-time favorite Yankee. He is still adored by the fan base to this day. I wear his jersey proudly. I would love to meet him one day. Very cool you got to see him around Indiana. Class act and wonderful player.

      @reignman2112 I visited Evansville back in 1994. Went to Mattinglys 23 restaurant. Definitely was a cool place. Wish it had stayed open or he had opened it in NY. Would have done well I think. I still have the menu and a hat from my visit.

      I used to attend the same church as his brother Randy. The whole family is like Don. But I’m kinda glad I don’t live in Evansville anymore. Left there in 1996 and haven’t really been back except to visit my sister in Newburgh.

    My last name is also Mattingly. I was 9 years old when he made his jump to the majors. Pulled a 1984 Topps #8 rookie card from a pack when I was a kid and had it for 37 years now! He is the main reason I got into the hobby, nearly 40 years ago. Great player and ambassador for the game and should be in the HOF!!!

    My favorite player as a kid. He was the reason why I became a Yankee fan. I collected baseball cards back in the day and I think close to 30 Don Mattingly cards from earliest 86 to 93 season. They are still in mint condition saved inside my plastic card case.

    Don Mattingly was a great player and remains a great person. He certainly belongs in the HOF. Nobody with his stats is not in the Hall. 307 lifetime BA ; over 200 hrs and more than 1000 rbis and runs scored. 9 gold gloves. And classiest player in the game. Hit 424 in playoffs. 1994 strike ruined his chance for WS. Ed Hayes

      His stash was definitely a signature look to his appearance but to me, Mattingly will always be Don Mattingly regardless of the way he grooms. He was the main factor that kept me entertained while watching the Yankees during the dreadful 80s and early 90s. It was an utter disappointment not seeing him ever advance to the ALCS and World Series. Losing to Seattle in 95 after being up 2 games to 0 was one of the biggest letdowns for me as a fan, although Donny's performance in that series was right on par.

    If pro basketball can put broken down Grant Hill in their HOF. Mattingly should be in the baseball HOF!!!

    • @76JStucki
      @76JStucki 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well....I see where you're going with that, and it's true Matty was having a HOF level career. But his career ended. Grant Hill was able to redefine himself and still play great in a different way. That's not Mattingly's fault, they played different games and had different injuries. But I think the feeling is his career was too short. You gotta remember Grant Hill played 19 seasons. Having said all that, I'd put Mattingly in before some of the more recent inductees.

    • @artt9717
      @artt9717 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@76JStucki Grant Hill was paid for 19 years. His greatness was over when he signed with the Magic who foolishly gave him a huge contract with his injury. He was never an all star caliber player other than with Detroit. He had a reputation of being a great guy and he liked milking those NBA paychecks. Whereas Mattingly had the integrity to retire when he realized he could not perform at his potential.

    Quick anecdote about the player that went passed rather quickly at 5:18. "Future Stars" Joey Meyer has the furthest home run in professional baseball history, listed at 582 ft. Went down the rabbit hole one day trying to find the longest shots of all time that are verifiable. While it's debated if it was more in the 510 range, it was a bomb for sure.
