@@AgxntAqua You will not eliminate bad guys that need to be fought, so you have to make sure your good guys are ready to step in. Sport has traditionally been used for exactly that, so that men have some form of combat so they don't take it to the street, as much. Do you want some thug to just be able to rob a woman in broad daylight and have no man step in and fight out of honor for the woman? Well you have to reward his bravery, or else that woman is very likely to be killed if she resists, or robbed at the very least and possibly killed anyway. There have already been incidents of men not protecting women being attacked, and it's because your culture of no honor punishes men for defending innocent lives. A culture without honor, means a culture with no good men, and no one who will fight for their fellow man. Sport engrains this in us as young lads, he hit my friend, I'll beat him up. I do not enjoy going on such a long diatribe in regard to sport, but you brought up the asinine idea of eliminating honor.
As veteran that got a lot of head trauma I respect the CTE argument but I think investing in better helmets and working on taking out hits to the head are more effective than taking out fighting but at the end of the day it will come down to owners and players Union
hits to the head are inevitable there will always be headshots even unintentionally. size and body position is very crucial and the game is so fast some players dont have the time to adjust their bodies according to a hit
@@janzkee obviously there’s no way to remove all risk but that doesn’t mean they can’t work to improve, also the players can adjust they are the best players in the world they will and do adapt every year
I would double down and state the enforcer is needed in the NHL again. Paul Karyia and many more careers would have been much longer if they had an Semenko protecting them. Hits not fights are causing most of the head damage. Enforcers remove the cheap shots, especially on the star players.
If both hits AND fights are causing head injuries, why not remove both? If cheap shots are a problem, why not remove the offenders non-violently (via a ref, suspension, etc.)?
@joelsteve94 why not embellish and flop around like you've been shot? Roll around holding your shin until the ref blows a whistle? Contact in an enclosed space at high speeds with men in excess of 180 lbs minimum with sticks will result in contact. What you are proposing is a different sport entirely
I used to have seasons tickets for the New Westminster Bruins in the '70's. In 4 years, I probably saw at least 500 1 on 1 fights, dozens of line brawls and probably a dozen bench clearing brawls. I find it Strange though how so many people claim they hate fighting in hockey yet when a fight starts they're standing up watching too.
This. And is he really going to be staying in the lineup all the time if he can't produce offensively (which admittedly he currently is doing)? Isn't the whole reason enforcers have become rare because there's no room on rosters for players whose only skills are violence-based? Also, he's not getting paid for the playoffs.
With what we know about brain damage from sports, allowing people like Cooke to injure someone for life and continue to play is criminal. While I don’t condone fighting, at least the two guys choose to do it.
@@MassReelFishing correct and a hit to the body is just as bad for your brain as a potential punch, esc dirty hits you’re not prepared for. The main reason fighting is still around isn’t because of the fans, or they would remove the instigator rule, it’s because the fighters want it. Watching the Rangers play with Rempe seemed to just nullify Wilson and they seemed to play fearless.
I mostly agree with this, but with a few caveats: - Individual cases probably aren't a good metric, but in general way back then the game was slower and average player size was smaller. So that would result in fewer chronic brain injuries on the whole. - Howe took some nasty hits in his time and his son says there was a lot of cognitive impairment in Gordie's last decade and a half that would be consistent with repeated concussions. - Even on skates a lot of this window of CTE cases comes from the days when enforcers were taking their helmets off an engaging in lengthy cocaine fueled hammer fests on each other's heads.
Yea Lindros and Kariya had their careers ended because of dirty high speed checks to the head. Enforcers are there to punish dirty players fighting is essential to deter scumbags that want to try and knock out a star player.
Let's be honest; people like hockey fights, and true fans of hockey know that there's an unwritten honorable Code of being an enforcer. Rempe, probably grew up watching and enjoying that aspect of the game and now he's trying to recreate it
Seeing McDavid in person is so true. I always heard and knew he was good and had seen it on video but i was fortunate enough to go to one of Vegas' playoff games last year vs edmonton and seeing him in person, just outskating everyone on the ice was remarkable.
The fight we want the most is Olivier-Rempe II. Olivier beat the ever living snot out of the kid. I expect him to deliver a bit of getback next season because both players will be on their respective rosters in 24-25.
PREACH!!! Hockey has more of what makes athletic competition compelling than ANY other sport. Therefore, and this is not hyperbole, hockey is objectively the MOST COMPELLING sport EVER CREATED by humankind.
If you remove fighting, you’re going to increase the amount of cheap shots and dirty hits that happen in a game, which is going to lead to even more concussions and serious injuries. Fighting keeps that crap in check
Thing is, A) Fighting is part of the spectacle and B) The players, while comparatively broke college dudes in the world of premier league athletes, are still paid effectively retirement money on their first contract. A standard ELC is like 750/yr for 3 years plus preferential access to world-class medical personnel paid for by NHLPA insurance. You gotta take the big risks to get the big bucks, and bad hits are one of those risks (unintentional bad hits are a thing that happens when you're doing 25mph down the ice)
As a hockey player fighting is simply part of the sport, its traditional lol not encouraged but once it goes down it goes down and that’s that. Feels like those against it probably haven’t played the sport. Checks are way more lethal than any fight if we’re discussing potential injuries, CTE, etc etc

This certainly makes an argument for a video idea to explore the culture and history of fighting in the NHL. When was the first recorded fight? Why did it wind up becoming common place? Why did it flourish where anywhere outside of the rink it would be an assault charge? Interesting questions that would be intriguing to delve into.
Meh, Canadian fan here. I’ve never watched a game for the fights. I’ve always loved the good fights, but I’ve never watched the game for them. As a child, I found them exciting, yet having lived through the post-enforcer era, I didn’t find the game less exciting. Especially through the anti-fight era, it’s clear fighting has its place, but it doesn’t define the game. We used to expect 1 or 2 fights per game, and now it’s not uncommon to have a couple games without a fight. The fight still happens, and it still matters, but the game has become faster and more focused on skill than ever before. I love it. Break the code, get broken; but the focus is more on the talent, imo. The game is faster than it’s ever been, and the brief period of zero physical consequences seems to have departed as well. I really think this particular time is some of the best hockey we’ve ever seen. It’s seems the balance has been found, for the time being.
Just so you know, CTE can only be diagnosed after death - you have to take a biopsy of the brain. Majority of these cognitive issues are diagnosed as concussions
It’s refreshing to hear/read positive opinions on fighting and not see people get torn apart by people who are “anti-fighting.” Coming out as pro-fighting in a lot of places online gets you ripped to shreds.
Without fighting do you think that the game will suddenly become like a ballet with brilliant moves and fabulous goals? No, it will turn into a dirty back stabbing game that no one wants to watch. The leagues that don't allow fighting are usually like that.
the game of hockey is NOT entertaining with out fighting or hitting. this kids a breath a fresh air in a league thats fallen victim of Americanism destruction of defensive and physical game types. the game needed the red line the two line pass which both regulated the speed to prevent garbage no touch icing. as some one who grew up watching hockey in the 80s and 90s the league is pretty boring, i cant tell you the last time i gave the slightest shit about watching a game.
Side note i wonder if removing hitting will uptick of younger generation of player who cant brace for impact. Which in turn could lead to more injuries.

Rempe isn't a problem he's an echo of the past that a lot of us wish was still around - CTE is from CONSTANT hits, football players get hit all day everyday during football season, UFC fighters spar all day. Even rempe fighting 'a lot' isn't anywhere near other sports head hits.
When someone tries to argue gridiron football is the hardest hitting, tough guy sport, one of my go-to mic drops is to point out that this league sanctions bare knuckle fist fighting... [pause] ...in the name of player safety. I've never once heard a comeback.
I feel like the NHL either needs to get rid of it completely or ramp it way up. This weird limbo thing we're in where the player safety is super inconsistent with what they call but also restricting fighting doesn't work. They either need to hand out more punishment or let the players police the game
‘’It’s a way to relieve tension from the game, as there’s a lot of emotions that has to occur to lead to most fights’’ I agree with this, and overall don’t have much of a problem with fighting in hockey. However, emotions, adrenaline and testosterone run high in all men’s sports, yet hockey is the only sport where this happens regularly. Almost like hockey players are taught to deal with their emotions like children. Saying that banning fighting will lead to harder, more frequent hitting is an example of that. If players were able to control their emotions, less fighting wouldn’t lead to more hitting.
It’s not impact the head that causes the problem it’s the fact that your brain swash is inside your skull and when it bangs against the side of your skull apparently that’s not good for it so frankly fighting a lot safer than when they have a collision at 35 miles an hour and your body just stops immediately and your brain keeps going forward and guess what it’s going to be no way to ever take that out of the game unless you just don’t play hockey anymore so why don’t we just all recognize that in life there’s risks and dangerous and if you try to illuminate that then there would be no such thing as race car driving football players hockey players etc.
My problem with Rempe is not the fighting, its that he doesnt seem to know how to make a normal, safe hit. Charging, leaving his feet, elbows, head contact.
1:46 wow this guy, this dude just explained the concept of Hockey in the best way imaginable (I could not say it like that in words better even if I tried)
If players don't want to fight, they don't have to. Fights in hockey are mutual, both parties agree to fight. So if the players want to fight knowing the risk, let them fight. UFC hasn't become a wrestling league just because of CTE, they know the risk when they sign up for it. And in hockey they can opt out of fighting in games if they so choose.
Gretzky and MSL are two undrafted players that are better. That being said, there’s a chance that Panarin can pass Martin St.Louis. There isn’t a bigger Ranger fan than me but I think it’s going to take a cup and a few more season putting up similar numbers to this year.
@@stevenbrodeur3023 Gretzky certainly never got drafted since he was offered a contract at 16 years old. He doesn't even count as undrafted in my book.
I think that fighting for the sake of fighting is not the case anymore. Players are not employed strictly to fight people on a roster. One thing I do support is punishing fighting in youth sports. There are millions of kids that won’t play in the NHL, so not having that developmental issues and trauma for hockey players would be great. Also forcing kids to use smarts and skill instead of size, toughness will lead to better players of hockey. But hockey has an aura that no other sport has. When it comes to fighting I think it should be heavily penalized but controlled. The system we have in place is great.
Tie Domi was a notorious enforcer with the most career fighting majors. And from what I've heard he has shown almost no signs of CTE and is alive and well. I do see both sides but there needs to be some toughness and hard fought combat as that's what the game is known for.
If he can just keep his elbows down and deliver clean, crushing hits, he would be a highly coveted player that every team wants. At that point, he can then work on his offensive game like be an excellent net-front presence...
born in 99' a fan since a child in 2004, im so proud of what this league has become, its only a matter of time before the Stanley Cup is bigger than the superbowl.
I dont think fighting in the nhl is going to cause cte nearly as much as compared to boxing or ufc where guys can hit harder since they have their feet planted on the ground instead of balancing on skates and go on for much longer landing 100s of blows over the course of rounds compared to a hockey fight where it lasts not even a minute and most of the punches land on the back of the guys helmet. Rarely is there ever an actual knockout either, if guys were going out left and right like nick kypreos I would be concerned, that doesn't seem to happen though.
Rempe doesn't get $855,000 - that's for 82 games. If he's in the minors, he gets much less. When he's suspended, he loses the salary he would have had for those games. His earning according to Capfriendly are about $230,000. Still more per fight than professional fighters.
As long as cheapshot hacks are accepted, or just overlooked, there is a need for enforcers. At the same time I'm tired of hearing of my hockey heros dying or crippled.
Nazem Kadri was a loose canon too... more so than Rempe. Almost ended his career as he really hurt a couple guys. Rempe is just huge, and not really tryin' to hurt people. Those match penalties were pretty soft, to be hones. I'm an AVs fan, so no real skin in this game, but I like seeing young guys keeping the game physical.
I think a big problem with some of the arguments for pro fights in the NHL, forgets that it's not allowed and thus there are no rules in place for what's allowed and what's not. Take MMA, There are strict rules which has to be allowed and they're (to my knowlegde) enforced. It can become a slippery slope if it's not enforced more strictly, either for or against fights. IMO.
Lmao . They only got 5 minutes for fighting back in the 70 s or 80s . It’s hysterical guys would fight 20 to 30 times a year . It’s ridiculous he really hasn’t fought that much .and he can play
As a huge MMA fan I’d be a hypocrite to say that two willing partners shouldn’t be allowed to have a go at each other. CTE is definitely a concern but these guys know that well. And I’d rather take few punches from a guy on wobbly legs than a check to the head at 30kmh, that’s for sure. I just think a lot of these guys take on fights they have no chance of winning for the sake of pride or team honor or whatever. That’s when it gets dangerous. If I tried to fight a professional boxer on the street I’d be more concerned about hitting my head on the pavement when he inevitably sleeps me. I feel the same way about massive mismatches in hockey fights. If the sport is already dangerous why take unnecessary damage over ego?
Interesting take on the matter. Without disagreeing with you, I still think that brain trauma would decrease if referring improved. I think sending more people to the bench would possibly decrease the amount of fighting and illegal hits.
Players like rempe need to exist. It's because of them being phased out that we have rookies taking pot shots off the goalies head to deflect it into the goal. There's no such thing as deterrence. Just today Coyle on the bruins did the same exact thing. Tried to bounce it in off samsonovs face. Too bad reaves is a washed up dirty bum. Doesn't fight just throws elbows.
Exactly. It’s hard to explain to idiots how the fighting actually makes the sport safer. If fighting weren’t allowed then a bunch of bums would be cheapshotting star players and getting away with it. The fighting stops things from getting too out of hand and dirty on the ice because you’ll realize that if you keep playing like a punk someone like Ryan Reaves or Rempe will knock your head off.
This rempe kid reminds me of the pitcher from the Dodgers...you know that one dude that will sit there and tell the person at bat what the catcher wants him to throw. Rempe is tall, goofy looking, and is 1 ft 1/2 taller than the majority of enforcers...even towered over Ryan reaves. Now time to fight Wilson Rempe.
Respectfully disagree that hockey has the pace of the NBA. On the contrary, the NHL is exponentially faster than basketball. But it is cool to consider how hockey contains elements of all sports, especially soccer, football, and boxing. It's a click bait video. Rempe created a buzz in his rookie season. He is not a big problem for the NHL.
Is fighting on the way out of the NHL? If so, will it make the game worse?

Later a woman is attacked in the street, "that man is attacking a woman, I will go to protect her."

Helmets could I only do so much I feel.

@@joelsteve94because no one wants to turn hockey into another soft sport like soccer or basketball and no one would watch.
@@joelsteve94Remove hits? Go watch basketball dude 😂
It is possible to enjoy a fight and except that there are also ramifications. Everything doesn't have to be a binary option.
If you consider Rempe did not make his full salary this year, he was closer to $30,000 a fight. Still a lot, but not $240,000.
This. And is he really going to be staying in the lineup all the time if he can't produce offensively (which admittedly he currently is doing)? Isn't the whole reason enforcers have become rare because there's no room on rosters for players whose only skills are violence-based? Also, he's not getting paid for the playoffs.
Been apart of this debate since the hockey fight forums back in the day. Eliminate fighting and open the cracks for Matt Cookes to weasel in
With what we know about brain damage from sports, allowing people like Cooke to injure someone for life and continue to play is criminal.
Matt Cooke has weaseled in anyways (which I agree he should never have been able to)

Fighting on skates is not the same as real fist fighting. It's the speed on checks and high hits. Gordie Howe lived to 88. Nuff said.
I mostly agree with this, but with a few caveats:
- Individual cases probably aren't a good metric, but in general way back then the game was slower and average player size was smaller.
Exactly! Take out fighting & then players can’t police the game. More hits from behind & more boarding.. More dangerous!
Best hockey vids on the platform hands down, keep it up!
this video solidified my love for hockey.
Olivier is golfing and Rempe is scoring goals 😅
What an excellent video. Well spliced, hilarious, thought-provoking, and pretty fun. Best hockey video essay of the year!
As someone who has played hockey for 10 years of my life it annoys me a bit that some people just watch hockey for the fighting
I really appreciate your insight and perspective on this topic!
One solution could be, you get into a fight, you go through concussion protocol. If you have a concussion you sit out, if you don’t you keep playing
i mean i think rempe needs to tone it down a bit but we cant remove fighting, its part of hockey.
No one is saying they need to remove it. He is a dirty player. The hits and injured players with illegal hits.
@@brittrugg2676 people are litterally saying to remove it and it has been banned at major junior levels of play
i don't think the CTE danger in hockey is anywhere close to something like the NFL where linemen are taking hits to the head on every play
The half Matt Rempe/Diego Lopes picture is amazing
It's almost necessary, refs can't see everything you need the enforcers for when things are getting chippy with your stars.

As someone who is a hockey fan/player from the UK, I’d say about 60% of people only watch hockey for the fights especially NHL
It fuels many leagues
Thank you for video!
Your arguments were absurd
Let’s hear your counter, I’m open
Just so you know, CTE can only be diagnosed after death - you have to take a biopsy of the brain. Majority of these cognitive issues are diagnosed as concussions
For sure, but it’s no secret that having many concussions throughout a career will lead to CTE

400 penalty minutes would break the single season record set by Bob Probert (398)

When someone tries to argue gridiron football is the hardest hitting, tough guy sport, one of my go-to mic drops is to point out that this league sanctions bare knuckle fist fighting... [pause] ...in the name of player safety. I've never once heard a comeback.
when you talked about going to the fox game i was surprised thinking how is this guy also a nucks fan who lives in calgary
Let's the men Duke it out, it's the most exciting part of hockey.
I feel like the NHL either needs to get rid of it completely or ramp it way up. This weird limbo thing we're in where the player safety is super inconsistent with what they call but also restricting fighting doesn't work. They either need to hand out more punishment or let the players police the game
Nah it made more popular in recent years
‘’It’s a way to relieve tension from the game, as there’s a lot of emotions that has to occur to lead to most fights’’
I agree with this, and overall don’t have much of a problem with fighting in hockey.
Also they're not allowed to take their helmets off when they fight anymore. The helmet has to get punched off.
I appreciate how you brought up ufc pay, its such a joke when starting out, guys would get like 6 g to fight on the bog stage
It’s the hits that causes concussions!! Not just the fights
My problem with Rempe is not the fighting, its that he doesnt seem to know how to make a normal, safe hit. Charging, leaving his feet, elbows, head contact.
We Stan Rempe 🙌🏻
Lol Did not expect to see you here Marc
1:46 wow this guy, this dude just explained the concept of Hockey in the best way imaginable (I could not say it like that in words better even if I tried)
If players don't want to fight, they don't have to. Fights in hockey are mutual, both parties agree to fight. So if the players want to fight knowing the risk, let them fight. UFC hasn't become a wrestling league just because of CTE, they know the risk when they sign up for it. And in hockey they can opt out of fighting in games if they so choose.
4:10 I'd argue that Panarin is the best undrafted player of all time since the draft began.
Uneducated people would tell you it's Gretzky
As long as we dont have another Derek Boogaard situation, I think it'll be okay.
born in 99' a fan since a child in 2004, im so proud of what this league has become, its only a matter of time before the Stanley Cup is bigger than the superbowl.
The NHL does a bad job protecting players a lot of the time from dirty plays, slewfoots or checks. Fighting helps respond and/or police it.
Ban fighting altogether in the playoffs.
Swear to god. Can they force enforcers to wear ufc gloves under the hockey gloves to reduce the dmg.
The game needs more fights and more physically
This rempe kid reminds me of the pitcher from the Dodgers...you know that one dude that will sit there and tell the person at bat what the catcher wants him to throw. Rempe is tall, goofy looking, and is 1 ft 1/2 taller than the majority of enforcers...even towered over Ryan reaves. Now time to fight Wilson Rempe.
Rob Ray is doing just fine…….actually pretty funny as CC
Only 5 fights? Times have changed
