A good friend of mine recommended this song to me years ago and when I heard it I stood still and listened.. Then I played it again and again repeatedly on that day and I cried. My interpretation after all this I can't blame my father either as he had a tough life with all his faults. Like we all do. My dad was hard and tough. Now old and soft and I'm going to play it to him. This is the greatest song of my life across all genres as It touches me personally and I am not a soft person. Nothing else has before throughout my life or since. Just this one for me in Northern Ireland
Great upload thank you! There´s more to life than being good with money and being able to hold a job. What a beautiful tribute to the old man! "you taught me how to love a song And all you knew of nature's ways: The greatest gifts I have ever known And I use them every day"
I had the pleasure to see this great guitarist and storyteller for the second time last night, this time at The National Centre for Early Music in York, and both gigs goes on my all time favourite gig list. This is such a beautiful, moving and well written song. He truly paints pictures with his words and music.
For David Howard. Hopefully fishing with his split cane rod in our galaxy and still riding motorcycles, waiting for his family and army comrades to join him. Bless his army comrades and all his family. He loved this song and passed it to me. Now I pass it others before I join them all ....
This and more than enough get me every time, southport last night he did one about killing animals didn't get the title but the words killed just because they were there ,anyone know the title?
A tribute to all those under appreciated fathers who if nothing else imparted a deep love to us sons to carry on the traditions.
The man is a genius. To write such an emotional song. And to play guitar like this. Eternal.
The unbelievable ode to a father who gave us this gift.
So grateful this song is exists - one of the great father / son tribute songs of them all
After all these years I still cry every time I hear it...beautiful.
Saw Martin play for the first time a couple of years ago in my local tithe barn. It was a magical night - how we're all missing those now. ☹️

Saw him play this about seven years ago and when it came to the last verse I just lost it and sobbed!
Unbelievable. One of the greatest guitarists at phrasing.
Love this song and the lyrical pacing.

Unbearably beautiful.
Yes. Completely moving. Funnily, it is not myself nor my father I see in this song but my son. He even goes fishing.
One of the greatest songs... Thank you...
The guy is a genius and this song touches people's souls. Some years ago my daughter, then 7, listened and said Dad, is this song about you? Mm ok...
Ouch!
I think that there is a bit of everyones dad in this song
He sucks bro
Simply one of the best songs ever written. The last verse just ruins me.
I agree. The last verse is a thing of greatness. In the words of Bob Dylan, 'Right on target, so direct.'
Martin carries on the fine tradition of Roy Bailey and Leon Rosselson.
no comments?!?!? wtf!!!!!??? Quality playing and video, love it
Thank you for sharing this Gem. I love it!
Tremendous Martin Simpson. Enough said!! 🕊🐝

The latest record, Trials & Tribulations might be the best yet. A wonderful artist.
