  • In Part two Martin and I discuss why open tuning and folk music go hand in hand, Martin shows us some of his Banjos and we discuss the history of this wonderful instrument. However, whats a real learning curve for me is that he teaches me that you don’t have to learn to play barre chords to be a great guitarist, he also plays a snippet of a new song he is working on and more.

This is a really relaxed conversation and extremely interesting to watch. Thanks to you Kylie, and Martin.
I’m lucky to have seen Martin live on many occasions. He is always progressing, always entertaining, and really approachable and good to talk to. I was also even more fortunate to have been on one of his weekend courses some years back, which was completely inspiring.

Well, Kylie, you got an amazing amount out of Martin, who I have been a huge fan of for many years. I have his teaching vids, etc, etc, but this was a great interview. As an aside, Big Yellow Taxi is actually in open D tuning. I played it in open G for many years as I did with a LOT of her repertoire. BUT it is for sure in D, you can hear it and see that. in open G, Joni usually tuned the low E down to the G BELOW! It was only when I started playing banjo and looked at her hands again that I realised everthing is just moved over a string to get those same changes, which I learnt from my banjo teacher. So, in open D, where he has that partial C is moved down a string (1st finger, 1st fret, 3rd string; 2nd finger, 2nd fret, 5th string) and the low D is right there on the root and so is not redundant/problematic as it is on open G). I also loved the way he taught you on zoom!

Ah kylie you look like you’re looking for ways out of having to learning your bar chords🤣! I will say at banjo it had my eyes glazed over, as much as I love it. Sticking with my guitars and mandolin. Just great thanks much!!

@@KylieOlsson i know the feeling. Lyrics and playing the keyboard has taken a step back due to job commitments but I'll get back to it. Keep focused 😊
