    Before big events
Are you preparing for a job interview, an exam, or a presentation to a group of people? It is stressful! There are many stressful situations that could like “final exams”. If you write about the stress you are feeling about the exam then you improve your chances of score better. The amazing power of expressive writing! Writing just before a big event about the stress of the big event gives you super powers! It’s in the research!
    After negative experiences
Another time to write is after negative experiences. We tend to hang on to memories of when:
our significant other said or did something that hurt our feelings.
our boss or teacher unsympathetically dismisses our hard work.
a friend or relative makes us feel dumb or embarrasses us.
These experiences trigger anger. And although anger is not a sin it can get in the way of us being productive. Research shows that writing about negative experiences frees up working memory. Our minds can comprehend and manage more things without the stress! This is one of a couple big benefits to expressive writing
    Bookend your day!
    Morning bookend
Many writers and writing programs have touted the personal benefits of writing in the morning. An example program is writing continuously for 20 minutes without stop or caring for the quality of the writing. Write about yourself. Write about how you feel. Write for your eyes only. I like to call this kind of writing “Grip-it-and-rip-it writing”. It is something I do each morning in my prayer journal. It works wonders on my day.
    Evening bookend
The second part of this bookend approach is writing before you sleep. You guessed it, research shows that you sleep better with gratitude writing at night. So part of your nightly ritual after you brush your teeth(!) grab your pen and journal and essentially count your blessings. 😁 Write “I am grateful for…” you fill in the blank. You’ll sleep much better by filling your mind with gratitude.

All the teens or anyone starting to journal, one big advice.. don't ever ever tear out, cross out or throw out your journals no matter how embarrassing you may think it is. I have regrets of journals that were lost or destroyed. I wish I still had them. X many years later it would be interesting to see how much I have grown and changed over the years. Don't get rid of journals :).

I journaled when I was 11 because I didn't have anyone to talk to and no one cared about my experiences....now I am 14 and I have loads of journal books
Edit:I'm now 15 turning 16 in 3 monthes and I can tell you guys I am now mentally in a worse state than I used to be. I don't journal anymore though but I express my feeling in drawings. Though, I do wish to start journaling again since it helped me order my thoughts and give them some sort of structure to understand myself better. For me, expressing feelings through art and words is alternative therap, since I dont have enough time to have an actual session with a professional. If you dont know how to start, start by writing about what your plans are, what your goal is to write a journal, what do you want to achieve with it, why do you journal. And most importantly stay consistent with your writing (try to journal atleast once a week or even if needed once a day.)

Thanks for the video. I like to hear how other people use their journal.
I started journaling like 6 weeks ago. I don't like journaling everyday. This pressure "to write something down" produces stress inside me. Sometimes there is nothing meaningful happening. Or there is just so much happening, that i'm just living the moment, and i don't want to be bothered and get out of my flow-enjoyment-state to write something down. I can do it afterwards, even if i'm going to miss some great little memories.

I call my daily journal texture of life. Reason for that is to avoid myself from forgetting what I have done on a certain day. I can always look back to check what things I bought, what amount of money I banked, or what important news I read. The more sentimental things would be written as essays pretty much like Michel de Montaigne's genre. Anyway, gratitude statements is new for me. I might add them in my daily texture of life. Thanks for your insight.

I'll add # 3 into my routine, great idea. I also like to end an entry with to-do's for the next day no matter how trivial it may seem. It's fun looking back and seeing something like 'dry clean tux' since I'll remember that event. It's also very satisfying to cross off errands I procrastinated on.

Great video! Journaling is very therapeutic for me. I started using this and art therapy to help improve my mental state.
For me, I use the journal to write out my feelings (good or bad) about situations. This has helped me get into problem solving mode because the emotion is not bottled in anymore, and I’m not letting emotion cloud my decisions. I also use it to talk about things that may seem mundane, like rearranging my cabinets, but I talk about the why as well as the benefits that I got out of it.

Journaling has always been a natural thing to do for me. I have done it since I was 12, and now I'm 30. It feels so natural and I'm so thankful I have written so much, as I'm now an author (in Swedish though) and I have benefited from it a lot. Also, it was a way for me to understand what was happening to me during my childhood and adolescence. And now I have kept a record of my life for my memoirs that I'm currently writing :) I don't know why writing comes so naturally to me. But I'm blessed nonetheless. Anyway, thank you for this video, it was really interesting even to me as a seasoned journaler. I have subscribed :)

I journal every day, several times per day. I started about 13 years ago when I was trying to process the negative emotions of a bad relationship and then I kept it going.
I find it very relaxing. Also helps me organize my thoughts so my thinking isn't so scattershot.
Usually what I write is pretty banal, but I rarely read over it anyway. Over the past decade and a half, I know I've written several million words. I guess it's a kind of accomplishment?

If it helped you to honour God and your commitments, then, yes, it would be an accomplishment.

If you're talking about the law of manifestation, stay away from it. It's childish nonsense, and it can quickly ruin your life. The universe doesn't work that way, and life doesn't work that way.
If you want to write down something like that, then be smart and write down your plan that details the work you're going to do to get what you want. A good plan, a good education, and hard, smart work are how things are really manifested. And SMART is the key, with education next. Smart work is how people rise above the masses, Hard work without the smart tacked in front of it just gives you a bad back and a lousy retirement package, often just social security.

Hi, I “journal” in five main areas. 1. Personal studies, (usually on biblical or spiritual matters). 2. Penmanship practice, (usually inspirational quotes). 3. Work or professional logs (a work notebook). 4. Current events/state of the world. 5. Short film and short story ideas. Would you recommend my writings be in separate journals or combined into a single journal? I ask because for the most part, the common thread in all my writing is that they all come in the form of brain dumps. An idea pops into my mind and I want to write it down. The problem is that in order to keep my writings organized, this means carrying five journals everywhere I go. Suggestions? BTW, thank you for this video. It was a great help.

Be very careful about writing down short short story or novel ideas. I was a professional writer for thirty years, and often an editor, as well. I know writing down ideas is common advice, and it has worked for some writers, but it's rare. As one pro put it, "It leads to a notebook filled with most bad ideas that you'll try to write. It won't work, and you'll get discouraged."
Instead, when you get an idea, try to forget it. Try hard. If after thirty days it's still nagging at you, don't write down the idea, plant your butt and write the story. Whether you journal every day or not, if you want to be successful at writing fiction, you do need to write fiction very nearly every day. Don't believe anyone who says otherwise.

Ok, idk if it will help but this is the way I do it. I have the same problem as you, so what I did was to write everything in one journal, and I add post-its to it, as if it was a book, I use every color I can possibly use, so it's easier to identify what I wrote about

I credit a journal writing workshop instructor for getting me into journal writing. She was the coach I needed. She would call once a week to ask how I was doing and when I would tell her I was stuck, she would encourage me to start again. I was recuperating from a depression, and the journal writing habit took off. It helped immensely.
