  • Knowing how to administer intravenous fluids can save a calf's life. Severely dehydrated calves that cannot stand or even lie in an upright position are likely to be severely dehydrated with greater than 8% dehydration. Their suckle reflex is poor or nonexistent and IV fluids may be the only thing that can revive them. Elizabeth demonstrates how to place and secure a catheter and administer IV fluids to a recumbent calf in this episode of Calf Management Tips.

For dehydrated sick calves Feed 1.5L x3 daily alternate between electrolytes and milk, either on the bottle or with a feeding tube. healthy calves will Drink 5L per day of milk plus compound feed also on a restricted milk plan. Feed calves in groups of up to 15 to ensure intake is adequate for each calf. Decrease milk amount when compound feed is more than 0.5kg/head.day. Wean when it is >1kg/head.day. continue to offer compound feed for 1 month after weaning from milk. Make sure there is a cocciostat in the feed.
