    Kings Quest V was the first VGA 256 colour game I played. Mind was blown. A few months later I got a soundcard :) Wing Commander nearly made me fail high school exams :) I remember it was quite tricky getting the expanded/extended memory setting right in MSDOS for Wing Commander, otherwise you wouldn't see all the graphics.

    Stunts, Monkey Island and Prince of Persia! Three completely different masterpieces that still bear fruit today. Stunts, its track editor and overall action-based racing (as contrast to a serious simulaiton like F1GP or Indy 500) surely served as inspiration for the TrackMania games. Monkey Island, alongside its various peers, helped outline the core pillars of point and click games (I'm thinking of a dev team called Wadjet Eye, and also the David Cage more cinematic stuff). And Prince of Persia would eventually be transformed into stuff like Tomb Raider, Assassin's Creed and Uncharted. It's awesome to see how today's games have deep roots! Thanks for the upload!

      @@itsaPIXELthing That was one of my first games on my first PC. It was probably the first game I played after installing my SoundBlaster Pro. Interestingly, it only supported AdLib sound, so the SFX still came through the PC speaker. But the graphics were arcade-perfect.

    i miss this era of Pc gaming. PCs were far more exotic and there was a learning curve to using them. if you wanted to play dos games, you needed to be able to mess around with config files depending on memory requirements of games, know the IRQs of your soundcard and alls sorts of other things you don't have to worry about nowadays.

    I grew up with MS-DOS, and somehow for quite some time I was more aware of Epic Mega Games' knock off of Puzznic: Brix, than Puzznic itself. Probably because Epic Mega Games was part of my childhood back in the MS-DOS era, but not really going beyond that, especially these days.

    The game I played the most of DOS and yet never reached stage 2 was Prince of Persia, I played that so much as a kid, died countless times, but it was so much fun! OutRun was also another game I loved on DOS.
    Now, I didn't know Golden Axe was on DOS though it doesn't look like it has the backstory just as the Genesis version whereas the TurboGrafx16 version does and it's pretty cool.
    By the way, have you played Gravel? I'm thinking about buying it to play on PS4 since it's on discount and looks a lot of fun, plus it's an arcade racer than a simulator so that's certainly a plus for me.
    Great video and take care. Hope you're doing better.

    I think it's worth it to reflect about a detail regarding point and click adventures that is not often talked about. Of course, the Lucas style derived from that of Sierra games, but with buttons instead of a parser, but it's good to remember that even those old Sierra games, like King's Quest, were, at their core, a graphical version of the old text adventures, like The Hobbit, for the ZX Spectrum, Zork, or the Dinamic / AD published games that were released in Spain, as well as similar titles by Brit and American publishers. The advancement in processing capability allowed not only for a screen to be drawn, but for direct control of the character on screen. Whilst I never could get into text adventures, I loved point and click ones.

    So many memories. Dad and I both loved Railroad Tycoon deluxe. We used to complete by starting games at the same time and seeing who could retire with the head of state future the fastest. (For the US it was President I honestly don't recall if the title changed for other countries.) I remember dad buying Railroad Tycoon II the first time we saw it but neither of us liked that game. And I've beaten every PC Wing Commander game and the spinoffs plus the SNES port of the original game and its expansions the GBA port of Prophecy and the PS1 ports of III and IV. I played Golden Axe at my cousins and Ivan at my favorite pizza place. I played Prince of Persia on a friend's PC and owned the SNES version. It looked impressive then!! (This was before Voodoo 3DFx). It was amazing that you can build the track yourself and then drive along it from the cockpit and from the external camera!
    p.s. Prince of Persia changed my ideas about games (after all the Arkanoid games, and Pac-Man - there was amazing character animation here!), You also mentioned motorcycle racing in the previous review, and I also played a similar game on Formula 1 cars - Grand Prix Circuit - I must have completed the championship dozens of times!! @@THEMARTIALARTSCHANNEL-bb4fx There are 2 'modern' ways to play HoMM 2, even on your phone of tablet of you want. First, there is the free fheroes2, an open source remake of the HoMM2 engine that runs on multiple platforms with all kinds of modern features - handy improvements, but not touching the original gameplay, audio or graphics.
      There is also a 'remake' of HoMM 2 using the HoMM 3 game engine, called 'HoMM Succession Wars'. I can strongly recommend both free options for you ! For HoMM 3, make sure you use the Complete Edition with the free HD Mod, never the incomplete and incompatible and inferior HoMM 3 HD Remake release.

    Man Prince of Persia was something. I had c64 and "086" with Hercules graphics as computers to have access. Then my friend got IBM 386 with VGA graphics. Seeing PoP first time. It was something astounding to see and boy I was jealous. 😀
    Some say Flashback is downright unbeatable game, but imo it was very doable and one of the only "platformers" I've completed without any cheating. But I still adore PoP and to me it's like 50x harder than Flashback. I think I've only gotten to something like level 5 in that before time ran out. Though it's completely possible that if I have had that PS2 at home I would've completed PoP back in the day. Good simple innocent times as kid... 🙂
    Dude, cool trivia about PoP and I've never realized that Golden Axe voice thing. I't obvious now.

      Piracy was all around back in those days :) and we would buy low density 3.5 inch floppies and, with a drill, would transform those into high density! Eh eh eh eh!

    I ABSOLUTELY loved and adored 4d Sports Driving. I used to build so many circuits and play them with the, honestly, only car that was worth playing, the F1 car, because it had both the best top speed, acceleration and the tightest turn. As for 4d Sports Boxing, I really enjoyed it too, an I remember having a pirated copy in which someone had created a boxer named Catalino el Destroyer. I still remember that over 33 years ago. I have used that name as a d&d character name in the past too, yes.

    One hell of a year for the people lucky enough to have a high spec pc . I was working in an independent computer shop at the time and remember being gobsmacked by games like wing commander and monkey island . I so wanted one but had to wait several years

      Yeah, I know that feeling. I only got my own IBM PS/1 486 only by September of 1993, but was lucky enough to have access to several machines available at school, at the computer class, and, also, some friends whose parents could afford such luxury :)

    This year was fantastic for MS-DOS games, in this list I have two of the games that I most played in my Schneider 386, the 4DS and Super OffROad, que na altura era mais conhecido pelo pessaol na escola como Ironman.

    • @itsaPIXELthing

    So many of these games are legendary for me... Had a Speccy from 85 to '90, with a couple of years in the middle of it without access to it bc mom said it was affecting my grades (it wasn't), then the CPC for a couple years, along with a IBM PS/1 in late '90... that was the time I first got to play proper good games with VGA graphics and it was amazing... Most of these games are what I upgraded to from playing really bad 8-bit games. Oh, the memories...
