I think it's a weird situation, he definitely has effort issues but the kings playstyle did not open up for him to do what he wanted to do. Also, the caps are not a veteran team bro, only Carlson, Dowd, Wilson and Ovi, the rest lack experience or have not been in the league very long.

2- Philip Danault was the nb 2 center with defensive duties. (the guy changed team because of potential reduced ice time)

I watched 4/5ths of the games PLD was in for the Kings. The Kings emphasize two-way play and PLD with his big body would often dodge opponents in the defensive zone. So many goals were scored against the Kings when he and rookie defenseman Jordan Spence were on the ice in the Kings' zone. Jordan is a rookie puck mover so while it's not ideal for a defenseman to let in goals, he's a rookie and learning. PLD is a huge center and a longtime veteran and you can see him skating around the defensive zone around players he should be checking (body, stick, whatever).
TL DR, you play your way into the top six. You also play your way out of the top six. PLD played his way out of the top six.

Let's face it. The LA kings had no idea what they wanted when they got Dubois. They knew how he played and tried to change his ways while cutting his icetime and using him as filling.

As a Kings fan, my frustration grew to the point where I'd specifically watch PLD when he was on the ice to see what was happening. The guy avoided the puck at all costs. It was incredibly rare that he'd bury his head and give 100% skating effort to make a play. There were even times when the other team had a breakaway, PLD was the closest guy, yet another teammate further back made it to the action. It was absolute insanity to see how little effort he put in. There were rare flashes of brilliance where he'd undress the other team's defense, and those are the plays that gave false hope. If I looked at the entire season, I'd say he gave 40% effort. As a Kings fan since the 80's, PLD is the only player that I wouldn't want to meet in person and get an autograph. It's projecting to say PLD's trade destroyed the Kings' chances for Cup contention in the playoffs. The Kings, with no 1C, no 1D and no 1G never had a chance. The moment they let go of Dean Lombardi in 2020, they should have been looking at a total rebuild within a couple years.

As a Kings fan i was pretty heartbroken considering the haul it took to get him and the financial commitment the Kings had made.
The Kings did drop the ball on his usage. Any player that gets over 100 minutes less power play time is not going to give you much, hut at the same time for $8 million dollars a player should make things pretty evident he needs more usage.
Pierre simply didn't earn much and didn't make it a hard decision to use him less.

Too bad PLD only lived in LA for a year but hopefully he made the most out of the lifestyle there.

If you mess up in 2, ok....if you mess up in every single market you enter? Thats just a lazy player, get the money, check out. I think PLD is exactly that kind of player. It's not a failure to me yes he doesn't try,yes he didn't show loyalty and cares more about money and location. Reminds me of the EvanderKane hate and DanyHeatley back in day.
How many hockey players grow up wanting get drafted, make millions, play NHL/pro hockey,Represent country WJC/WC,and is only 26yrs old. Yes he's not a McDavid,McKinnon,Crosby but it's not like he was drafted never played or got a regular job, isn't talented or gets to do what is a dream of many hockey players.
Even say a 1st round pick who still gets to play pro either I KHL/NHL/NLA make 150k plus a year I don't consider a bust they are still living their dream. And making more then us regular folk.

I like Torts but his coaching style if built for a different era of hockey. Players seem to be gravitating more towards the good guy coach over the hard edged ones. For Laine and PLD clearly they don't respond to his style, which is fine but tough when neither the coach or player is willing to compromise

I agree that Torts is A Terrific Coach & can get Results (as he did with The Bad Philadelphia Flyers team, the past season), however, having said that, it's not that I don't think that he's got to press the guys, but, I think that he's got to find a way to relate to the players & get the results without the Anger Management issues that he seems to have, even in interviews with The Media/Next Question comments.
