  • In todays video we got Welding Fly Duck stick welding a 1 inch plate with the SMAW process. The root pass is welded with 6010 and then is filled and caped with 7018. The welding electrode used is a size 1/8" to fill it up quicker.

Put some strong backs on the root side, with a mouse hole cut out . Ie two pieces of 12mm thickness flat bar, with a half circle cut out in middle of flat bar , doing this also will stop the plate being tacked on the root. And keep the plate welded more flat ,unless this has been preset for distortion.

When doing these full penitration welds we always preheat and use a needle gun between each pass to destress. Also post heat to to the same. All of our welds are ultrasound tested as well. Been welding for over 35 years, so much poor welding out there! Hopefully your video may help!

Beautiful 1" test plate, I had to chuckle at all of your comments as you were filling it up, after welding for over 45 years, ( now retired), and full penning welds on plate and wide flange beams as heavy as 700 lbs a foot, I've done and said everything you have just said to myself as I was filling joints up to a cover pass, always trying to make that Cover perfect, lol, you look like a great welder, hope these young guys and gals pay attention to you, they will learn some good stuff!! Great video, thanks...... and best of Luck to your channel. My GI bill put me through welding school in the 70's. Made a good living all my life, welding is a vital trade for anyone willing to actually work for a Living!

I work in a building that has some exposed w-shapes that look to be 1" thick, or close to it. These beams have been mechanically coupled when a connection is required and I always wondered why as there are 4 rows of 9 bolts each sandwichng the beam connection with 1" plates that extend at least 24" each side of the connection. That is literally 24x6x2=72 bolts! I assumed it has something to do with the difficulty in welding members of this size and watching this video helped my understand possibly why mechanical attachments might be favored due the amount of heat this many filling passes generates. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for uploading the video. I was doing this same with lighter stock in a welding class. From watching you, I had my arms properly positioned, but my face wasn't close enough to the weld. You have your hands just above your ears at the start. I will try to remember that on my next try. I am getting a better helmet to see the outline of the weld too. I had trouble seeing the edges of the metal bevels using my current helmet. As a result , I wasn't going straight like I thought I was.

With beveled open root, does material thickness really effect Amp settings that much? I was doing 3/8 material with same rod, bevel, same gap and land and 80A was just too hot. Hard to control keyhole. 70A turned out being the ticket. With equal gap an land an bevel the point of penetration is equal in both cases. that means the only difference is heat absorbance from the sides right?

After the hot pass on base metal that thick you need to transition to a 5/32 diameter filler rod. I worked at Newport News Shipbuilding and you would get reamed for welding flat down with 1/8 electrodes. These schools need to teach students to carry a larger puddle and get that joint filled.
