Brings back memories, First year appreice plumber. 1971 I loved working with lead.
I still love it too. It’s very satisfying. I also love taking pictures etc so I can always look back.
The portable kit, the bottle key, the model O torch....it's all coming back to me. I was doing lead welding for a living almost 20years ago.

@@slbleadworks I left the UK and do something totally different now. Last time I went back to the UK, I went to my old work place and tried lead welding again to see if I could still do it. Turns out I still had the muscle memory. Didn't do a bad job at all (code 4 butt welding).
I did the LDA course about 20 years ago, but don't think they ever mentioned the pressure used.i could burn the flat on a bench, but didn't have the confidence to burn in situ. You mentioning 0.4 bar has helped immensely, I had the oxygen on at about 2.5 bar and used to blow holes in the work. I've just done 3 47 degree welds and no holes. Thanks for your advice.

Done loads of Lead Burning years ago & miss it. Lads, don’t waste your time on anything but proper Oxy/Act set up, it’s the only way to go & you’ll improve your skills enormously with the right gear.
With your pressures etc as Stewart has stated.
A great tip I was given as an apprentice Plumber; to gain confidence, melt a pool in a scrap piece of Lead, play with the Pool & see how the Lead reacts to various sizes of flame in a Pool.
I’d be a bit rusty now, but would love another big Lead Job, great in the Summer but not in a Scottish Winter!!!
At one time you could buy 6mm Lead filler rod. Which was really handy.

With everything, there's always a "Left Field" option - I've welded since I was a kid & still weld professionally, except I weld steel. For the heck of it, I decided recently I wanted to learn to weld lead - just for fun, nothing to do with making money.
Roish,.,, so "conventional wisdom" says you need gas bottles to run wire for welding steel - I no longer run gas bottles, here's all flux core now, every machine - the cost savings have been absolutely phenomenal. Insane - with the Upside Upside being none of us would bother our hoop going back to buying gas. Flux core does everything we need.
So what's the "Alt" version for welding lead? How do you do it without getting raped by the gas-bottle companies? Not too many answers to that one tbh - everyone uses gas bottles, oxy/fuel. There has to be an "Alt" right?
The "Alt" is surprisingly built by Snap-On - the tool truck guys. They sell 2 torches that run straight butane/propane - the Torch 300 & the Torch 400. No oxygen required, flames perfect for leadwork, the tools are durable & built to do a days work.
So what is the "Flux-core" version of welding lead? A Snap -On Torch 300 or 400, that's what. Yes, of course, you need to buy fuel gas - but that's cheap, easy & readily available - you however do not need to buy commercial oxygen - which is where the huge savings come in. They are the "Left field option" if you intend doing this just for fun - I.E they take mastering, but work.
The snap on torch 300/400 definitely look like they would be hard for lead welding. Ideally you want a fine flame that only heats up a small area. Especially when you start welding uphill etc. A cheap lead welding alternative would be the Pro Gas 5000 If you didn’t want the expense of renting gas cylinders.

Neat work old sport, can you explain where to direct the flame when doing vertical welds, back sheet or front sheet first? I'm not bad on the flat, but lack the confidence to attempt vertical in situ. Thanks, Harry.
Thank you. On a vertical weld I direct the flame in the middle. So where the second sheet laps. If your struggling on vertical have you tried starting from the top. Come down. And then back up from the bottom to create the strength and thickness of the weld. So much easier.

Hi mate love the videos. would you recommend doing lap welds on back gutters and front aprons? I was taught to do them with butt welds but I’m wondering if lap welds would be better?

I think it’s just because it’s the way I was taught. And it doesn’t matter which way around you do.
And you should just do whatever you find the easiest.

I get along better with these ones. The ones with wheels on are a lot heavier and much bulkier.

Thank you. I normally change the bottles every 2 months. I have a spare set. This way I can run them down to completely empty.

Watching you makes me feel young again, I do miss it very much, it is a true skill,keep at it, it’s not easy, heavy work and in all types of weather. It’s no joke working in drizzling rain, worse weather you can work in, with the wind blowing.

I would like to start lead welding, I have an old building that requires a lot of lead and would like to be able to turn my hand to doing some myself. I plan to take a course to teach me the basics. Can you recommend a good kit with gauges that I could buy in the UK. Many Thanks.
I would recommend getting a genuine model o torch. They sell these at the welderswarehouse.com
I would also say get multi stage regs. I have victor edge. Although you can get by with single stage and these are a lot cheaper.
Keep the videos coming mate love lead welding I have a little turbo90 set with model 0 I have fitted. Obviously on my set I have no regulators to set bar pressure how does this effect things as I see you get yours to 0.4 bar ? I never seem to get the flame to a little ball or feather shape it’s often more of a point is that down to pressure you think ? Cheers mate
I would have a pointy flame if I was using the gas for cutting. You say you have a model o torch. Have you a number 3 nipple fitted?.
I would think if you can’t get a rounded ball it must be down to the pressure.
@@slbleadworks yea number 3 tip . I get a tidy ish weld but find as I can’t get nice ball you have to watch not to burn though . Might invest in a little trolley set I think . Cheers
@@cdav123 well worth investing in a set with gauges. You can get your pressure bang on. And also you’ll know how much gas you’ve got left. Nothing worse than running out half so you can’t get finished

@@cdav123 Hi Mate I'm still learning but picking it up. Lots of great vids from SLB 👍I started out with a set similar to the oxy turbo but I believe with propane you don't get the rounded flame as you do with acetylene. It was doing my head in why my flame was different haha
What do you think of the little turbo welding kits bud? I can’t seem to get the flame set right on it, your flame looks very tame but still very direct
I’ve got a oxy turbo set too. To be honest I don’t use them as the flame is much more fierce. It heats up a greater area. Although I’m led to believe you can get them now with a model o torch fitted. I do however like how light they are. They can come in handy some times.

I'm about to go on a training week and was considering propelyne or propane as ust easier to obtain and cheaper is there any advantages to using acetylene in you opinion?
To be honest I’ve only ever used acetylene. But I’ve never had any trouble getting hold of it

Si when I’m I’m doing a run the little domes look ok but when they cool down the middle sinks and leaves a little hole in the top of each one . What am I doing wrong? Cheers.

It sounds to me that your going too quick and /or the flame is too hot. If you slow down a little. Then wait for your last droplet to cool down. Then place the next drop half way on the last. Probably where it is used to sink and a hole appear. Let me know if this helps.
@@slbleadworks ok thanks I’ll try that. The set I’ve borrowed is the same as yours but it has a number 2 nozzle I can only get a small pointed flame and not the round ball on the end do you think this is not helping or does it need a clean or nothing to do with it?
@@marklittle6675 a really pointy sharp flame won’t help. The number 2 nozzle should be fine though. Yes try giving it a clean or even buying a new nozzle. I got mine from the welders warehouse. Although of course there are plenty of other places to purchase them too. Also play with the pressure on your regs. I have both of mine set at 0.4 bar.

I’m not sure to be honest I’d say lead is probably more expensive. The scrap value defiantly is.
Must you have a welding set. Is there any way to do it with a propane torch similar to a plumbers soldering kit?
I think the propane torch would heat a area that’s too large. For lead welding you need a much more precise flame. You can buy oxy turbo welding kits that are much cheaper than the more traditional oxy acetylene.

Given the agro for the DIYer in getting hold of acetylene, what are the professional's views of very easy to obtain oxy-propane kets for lead welding?

I think with those kits it’s best to go for the ones that have the model o torch installed.
And yes no flux is used or needed for lead welding.
I don't think we have the "Model O" here in the USA, Could you recommend a similar setup available in the USA.

That usually lasts 1 to 2 months i would say.

Hi mate. Any advice on a cheap kit to buy? I'm in the building game, but not a roofer, and I'm doing my own loft conversion. It'll cost me a small fortune to buy front aprons and saddles etc online, so a little kit to allow me to do it myself would be great. Doesn't have to be mega expensive, it's only for mg own house. Dont want some cheap sh*t either that breaks. Cheers pal
You would probably be better off buying an oxy turbo kit. Just make sure you get the model that has the model o torch. These kits are hard to use as it is. Especially if you’ve never done it before. I would usually steer everyone away from these but it’s gonna be your cheapest option. As if you go down the portapack route It will cost you around £600.00. So you would actually be better off getting a lead worker In.

Hi Lee. I would usually use 600 wide lead.
Starting at the front of the cheek mark out for your 600 wide lead on the dormer cheek.
The first measurement you take is the front corner. So from soffit to where it meets the slate/tile. Mark this measurement on your lead 25 mm in. This will be to welt the jamb to the cheek. You then take the back measurement of the panel. Same rules apply. Once you have your makes cut from point to point on the lead. This will give your angle. Then simply fold the 25 mm in to a square. Then next panel is similar. But the measurement is 50mm in. Also make sure you fix copper in the welts

It’s probably because your flame is too cold. Or your holding the torch too far away.

I've been trying with the oxygen turbo kits that you get down the merchants. Seems a bit unstable to me. Sometimes I can get it to work, sometimes not. Is it me or are they just rubbish?
To be honest I’m not a fan at all. The one I had was very basic and it didn’t have a model o torch fitted. It was so much harder to use than the setup I’ve got now.
I personally would try and stay away from them although I do think they have got better now.
I would say if you do need to go down this route make sure it’s the one with the model o torch.
@@slbleadworks yes, it's a torch with replaceable nozzles. Numbers 1 to 4. I can't change the torch because pipes are crimped on, not a nut type. I've got to do some welds tomorrow. If it doesn't work I'm just going to get the setup you have

They sell the genuine model o torch. I got that from there and then purchased victor regulators elsewhere. I can’t remember where. But just Google it. Although the setups welders warehouse have got are pretty decent.

You can but it’s usually extremely hard. I had to repair 100 year old lead a few months back. It was very hard to patch repair.
Hi Stuart, so I'm starting to get a grip with welding lead (thanks to vids like yours)it's not pretty yet and definitely NOT stacking dimes 😂 but I'm finding the metal flows and amalgamates better when I use a light coating of plumbers flux as well as scraping off the top coat of oxidisation. Is there a reason why absolutely nobody posting lead welding vids on TH-cam uses flux? Thanks in advance Paul.

To he honest I’ve been in the trade for 26 years and I’ve never known or heard of anyone ever using flux. Maybe your onto something lol.
To be honest it shouldn’t be needed,especially if your cleaning up your welding rods etc. Sorry I can’t be of more help. But I’m under the impression flux is more for pipe work etc.

Nice uniform lead burning mate. I’m fine on the flat. It struggle with vertical welding. I know the correct technique but can’t seem to stop the lead running away from me.
Can you recommend where to buy nozzles. Hardly anyway sells them off the shelf so I buy them on line and more often than not, they are cheap Chinese rubbish and badly engineered giving a crap flame.
